Awesome. Just found out that the both the CFO and the President at my company sold a combined 45,500 shares of the company's stock last week.No insiders have sold shares of the stock since November 2007.

well, the extension was nice, but our client got no more positive news from the DOE and is going to continue to shutdown the project. Hoping something else pops up at my company for me...but not looking good right now. Sep 24th is my current de-staff date off this project (ie my layoff date if no seats open on another project )

4 months and counting
9/11/2009 7:25:36 PM
This is making me sick. I'm reading threads about living in NOVA.People are asking things like "can I get by on 80k a year?"And the responses are usually "maybe..."
9/12/2009 9:16:01 AM
do these people have kids and want to buy a house?or are they single and plan on living with 5 people in a house?big difference.
9/12/2009 12:12:39 PM
I'm guessing it has to do with house prices which are indeed ridiculous. But still. I feel like a pauper here.
9/12/2009 12:43:11 PM
Still Searching....
9/13/2009 1:01:30 PM
does it look bad to apply for more than one position at a company?
9/13/2009 4:50:50 PM
If the positions are widely different, they're probably going to assume a lack of direction. Otherwise, I don't see the issue.
9/13/2009 5:19:06 PM
If you can't make it off 80k anywhere in the US (i dont care if its beverly hills, then you need counseling. As a matter of fact. 30k could make it anywhere- even the most expensive rent areas.

Well I'd like to say HI to the unemployment thread, lol. Anyone that's seen my recent thread knows what happened there. One question regarding unemployment compensation.I received $4500 in bonuses this year. Does your weekly compensation amount only take into account your normal salary, or does it take into account your total earnings (which would increase my unemployment compensation)?
9/14/2009 11:07:48 AM
I'm betting that you make enough money without the bonuses to get the maximum compensation of $351 per week.
9/14/2009 2:48:30 PM
351 is far from the max compensation.FAR

North Carolina — $476http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/11/20/national/a140117S46.DTL
9/14/2009 3:22:35 PM
Yea it's like $494Looking at this PDF and working backwards, you need to make $51,376 a year assuming salary pay and no bonuses, no raises, etc. for last the year and a half. Also if I'm reading it right RattlerRyan's unemployment benefits will be based on his highest earning quarter between April 1 2008 and March 31 2009.http://www.osp.state.nc.us/RIF/hrpros/UIFACTS%202009.pdf
9/14/2009 3:23:28 PM
The benefits calculator on the NCESC website says $505.Maybe that's with the $25 FAC bonus in there?
9/14/2009 3:45:25 PM
nvm, I am uninformed
9/14/2009 3:55:00 PM
^^no that appears to be right... mine says that too [hope I never have to use it lol]

yes[Edited on September 15, 2009 at 8:54 AM. Reason : not when you get it but you will pay up in april.]
9/15/2009 8:54:17 AM
i believe you have the option of having taxes taken out when you get it, or you can pay them later.
9/15/2009 11:05:48 AM
correct
9/15/2009 12:04:43 PM
Correct, the money you recieve from unemployment is considered taxable income. You can volunteer to have state and federal taxes taken out of your unemployment benefits, 10% for federal (you cannot change the federal amount taken out) and you can choose the state tax amount withheld.[Edited on September 15, 2009 at 12:35 PM. another "correct" on the tax situation

Thoughts on salary negotiations in this job market? Should I ask slightly lower than the average or ask for what I want? Background: Entry level investment analyst at medium asset mgmt company in DurhamI also really really want this job.
9/15/2009 1:13:17 PM
^if i were you I'd totally avoid mentioning one, leave any space blank and answer questions with questions. typically employers have a budget, and they'll prob. tell you how much they can even afford.reason I'm saying this is because when I put my desired salary I realized I could make a lot more but I sold myself short bc it was an entry level position. After that I just waited for the interviewers to tell me.
9/15/2009 1:25:48 PM
^^ I like the approach of absolutely not mentioning money until negotiation time. You avoid the question by turning the focus instead on the responsibilities. You want to see what they are asking and you want to see what you can do for them, etc. You keep everything in terms of worth and value rather than what you "want" or "deserve".I also avoid giving a number or a range first. You can only choose wrong. If you're too high, you price yourself out of the market. Too low and you leave money on the table. Just right, and you don't know if you were too low.
9/18/2009 8:45:41 PM
wait for an offer and go from there. i've always been taught that there (usually) isn't any harm in asking for a little more money AFTER an offer has been extended as long as you are polite and have a valid reason for doing so. if they like you enough to extend an offer, the worst they can say is no, unless you say/do something stupid when asking for it. definitely get other opinions though

Herndon, VA has a huge hispanic population...mainly because certain parts were the cheapest places to live in NOVA (house cost 550K during peak and now costs 300k, a 30 year old house in a so so neighborhood). There were tons of foreclosures because of ARMs. Also, a majority of them are employed in construction and lost their jobs. [Edited on September 20, 2009 at 12:29 AM. Reason : w]

Damn man. What was your line of work (I know sales, but specifically)?I took a Fed job else I feel pretty confident I'd still be looking as well. It seems like from the time I was laid off in Feb up until about late June or so I saw a lot of jobs posted and I felt good about getting back to work. Then, it seemed like the jobs just kinda dried up. I had a monster.com auto email thing every morning and for the better part of the early summer I'd have an email every day with at least 2-3 different jobs within my search criteria. Then I noticed I stopped getting them for days in a row and when I would get them they'd have a single job.
9/23/2009 11:03:53 AM
im actually kind of shocked i got let go but i had this eerie feeling that i was next in line...and then it happened. i was in sales for a medical device manufacturer and the last 3 years there i moved over to take a middle management position in marketing so i moved up the ladder there quite a bit. i really dont want to get back into sales unless i have to and prefer some sort of marketing job if i can swing it in either product management or development, pr, advertising etc.[Edited on September 23, 2009 at 11:13 AM.
