who wants to do a motorcycle track day on 21 Nov at CMP? It's also going on the 22nd, but I probably won't be able to make the Sunday session. This one is organized through Sportbike Track Time, and costs $135. You don't need to safety wire or flush the ethylene glycol from your cooling system or anything like that unless you're running in an advanced group. Pretty much just tape over or remove your headlight/signals/mirrors, make sure your tires are good (or have them mount a new set at the track), and you're good to go.[Edited on October 28, 2009 at 1:57 AM. where exactly is this at?
10/28/2009 8:37:07 PM
Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC
10/28/2009 9:09:23 PM
fuck that, its like 4 hrs from me
10/30/2009 7:26:32 AM
Dammit, not going to be able to make this one. My plan was to do the track day, then meet my ex down in GA that evening to pick up my little girl (in the past, she's always stayed in a hotel and driven back the next day). This time, though, she is going straight back to FL, and doesn't want to drive at night. I can probably track the S2000 in December at CMP, but I don't know when I'll get another chance at a bike track day. Looks like they are few and far between during the winter (at least at CMP and VIR).
11/20/2009 10:28:22 PM
just drive down there like a bat out of hell
11/23/2009 1:01:13 PM
Anyone game for CMP on Dec 5th (cars or bikes) and/or Dec 16th (cars only)?
11/26/2009 11:28:26 AM
bumpdidn't make it to CMP with the bike today...weather sucked.Anyone want to go on the 16th? (cars only...no bikes)
12/5/2009 10:50:59 PM
also, how much brake pad material to I need to have remaining when I show up for an HPDE (both in practical terms and to not get flagged in any sort of tech inspection?) What stuff do they look at/for in the tech inspections, in general?
12/5/2009 11:42:35 PM
Bumpsomebody help me out herehow much brake pad and tire do I need to have remaining when I show up for a track day?
12/10/2009 3:24:25 PM
It really depends on the track Duke. For your purposes you might want to look in the Track message board area of http://www.s2ki.comI thought you were going to order some pads from CarboTech?[Edited on December 10, 2009 at 3:29 PM. Reason : k]
12/10/2009 3:28:46 PM
^^i don't remember off hand, but THSCC's website has some tech forms online that have the minimum listed. Their spec should be fairly representative of other club's.Then again it of course depends on what pads, what car, what track, what temp, etc, etc.
12/10/2009 7:42:02 PM
Take it from me, if you're even wondering if you have too little pad material left, do yourself a favor and spend the money to buy new pads. It's but a small fraction of your registration fee.
12/11/2009 6:32:10 PM
eh, proper track pads all around is just about THE entry fee.
12/11/2009 6:58:09 PM
If you're replacing rear pads on a regular basis, I would think something is wrong with your bias.
12/11/2009 8:16:52 PM
i wore a set of rear autozone street pads down to the metal backing plates in one day.
12/12/2009 12:31:37 PM
^^S2000s are known for wearing out rear pads almost as fast as fronts.

What're everyone's thoughts on tracking tires with plugs/patches? My take is that even in the unlikely event that it fails, as long as you're at a track with run-off...well, it's not like a bike--you've got 4 tires! Any of you with significant track time disagree? Also, turn-one's website says 50% pad life is needed at inspection, but the only thing it says about tread is "no cords exposed." that seems a little odd, but I guess they're leaving it up to your judgement.
1/23/2010 3:26:37 PM
If you cannot dial in enough camber and run slicks, you can cord the inside of the tire easily. Cheap thing to do is flip them so the cord is on the outside. Not a brilliant thing to do, so the track looks for it.CMP eats cheap brakes. I ran two weekends on HP+ pads and have about 50% life. Its not too terribly bad on tires as long as you know the limitations of you and your tires. I have 5 w/e on a set of Kumho SPTs (1 w/e at RA) with about 40-50% tread left.I wouldnt track a patched/plugged tire. But I dont use the same tires between track and street. I have driven a plugged tire on the dragon, though. I ended up worrying so much about the tire (no spare) that I didnt really enjoy the weekend. I dont ever remember tires getting gooey on the dragon, though. CMP is all about managing the goo and fade. Cant wait to go back in May.

Anyone heard much about this new facility near Roanoke Rapids, the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research? A 4.7 mile long road course is nothing to sneeze at! And only 90 miles from Raleigh! It looks like the Carolinas Region of the PCA is trying to have DE events there in April and June. This would seem like something to add to my calendar.http://www.nccar.us[Edited on January 25, 2010 at 2:44 PM. Reason : website]

doesn't look like the full course is under construction yet, just a 2 mile one. That looks like the big Lowes warehouse in the foreground.[Edited on January 25, 2010 at 4:30 PM. Reason : ]

NASA-Southeast will be there in April. I think it is DE only since they deemed the track did not have enough flag stations for racing. $249 though if you register early enough (and have a NASA membership).http://nasa-se.com/2010Apr10.phpSweepers kind of talked me out of it,plus its a haul for me. Carolinas PCA rocks, BTW.
1/25/2010 8:10:30 PM
if you have a proper patch-lug. like the patch w/ the plug combined, then its perfectly fine. otherwise, i wouldn't risk it. four tires yes, but 50% of the time, two of them are often carrying a good majority of the lateral load on a road course. plus you have much greater temperature cycles and frequencies on a road course than on the street stressing the plug bond, etc.HP+ pads are not track pads. they will fade.
1/27/2010 7:31:34 AM
^agreed about the pads. And I've never seen anything good about Hawk track pads.
1/27/2010 8:55:13 AM
A look at my rotors are a lesson learned.
1/27/2010 12:05:54 PM
I run Carbotechs, you should check them out. They were fantastic for me at RRR, even though that's not really a brake heavy track.
1/27/2010 12:49:28 PM
Hawks are fine. I ran HT10s front and back all the time and was happy. I heard their new DSCs or whatever are even better, but damn pricey. The only Carbos i ran were XP8s which aren't very aggressive and didnt last long.
1/27/2010 6:02:49 PM
1/27/2010 6:09:59 PM
^^allow me to clarify. I haven't heard anything bad about their stopping performance, rather I've heard their brake dust is easily corrosive on the wheels especially if they get wet. Then again all the talk I've seen has been among S2000 owners, not any other vehicles. At the track I use XP10s in the front and XP8s in the back and was very pleased with them. Only thing I can think of was that maybe the people you spoke to didn't properly break them in?
1/28/2010 8:31:55 AM
^ heard and experienced the exact same thing regarding the HP+, and I, too, have the X 10/8 setup. Love the braking ability and control they have, and they seem to be wearing really well after 5 days on track.
1/28/2010 9:09:18 AM
my Green Stuff pads (front and rear) arrived today.I'll prob only get one track event on them, though...I plan on selling the car before I leave for Afghanistan.
1/29/2010 8:53:33 PM
^i had those on my ap2. good times were had by all.

The 944 Cup 2010 Nationals will take place at VIR ( Full Course) on Sept 10-11-12. The Cup Nationals will be part of a World Challenge (formerly Speed World Challenge) weekend. The event is being put on by SCCA Pro Racing requiring a SCCA Pro Comp License. Arrangements have been made with SCCA for Cup drivers to obtain a Pro Racing license for this event at a reduced fee. The 944 Cup will get 3 hours of track time over 3 days, ending up with a 45 minute championship race on Sunday morning. The 944 Cup will have its own dedicated run group for this event. The entry fee will be under $500. Also racing that weekend will be Trans-Am, Spec Racer Ford, and a VW Jetta TDI Cup Celebrity event. Hope you can join us for this first ever Pro 944 Cup race, if not as a racer, then as a spectator.

Duke, what does 2-21st mean, you're avail. all month?
2/9/2010 1:03:34 AM
sorry, iPhone typo. They're having a track day on the 20th and 21st. I plan on taking the S2000, and a buddy of mine from the squadron who used to be a professional racer might take his E46 M3 (or maybe his Stealth).
2/9/2010 6:36:17 PM
CMP this weekend...anyone else going?
2/15/2010 10:22:26 PM
Fuuuuuuuck! Both rear brake calipers need to be replaced. I think maybe I'm not supposed to do track days. Something comes up every time to keep me from going.
2/20/2010 1:06:02 PM
What do you mean both have to be replaced? How did this not come up earlier? Detailz plz.
2/20/2010 7:59:57 PM
they're the screw-piston type. when i tried to screw the piston in on the right rear caliper to make room for new pads (the old pads didn't have a lot of material left, and I figured I'd be better off with something decent--EBCs--than whatever likely suckass brake pad the previous owner last installed), I couldn't budge it. I finally gave up, put it back together with the old pads, and took it to a shop today. They couldn't turn it, either. They also tried the driver's side, and had no better luck there. According to the mechanic there, the only real solution is to replace the calipers.[Edited on February 20, 2010 at 11:57 PM. Reason : ]
2/20/2010 11:54:34 PM
wouldn't that be some shit if the previous owner used jb weld in place of locktite or some shit? That's just obnoxious.I don't know why I wanted to post that.
2/21/2010 12:26:02 AM
Was this a Honda specific shop? Did you have the proper tools to screw in the piston? Makes a big difference. Often shops won't try veryhard as a newcaliper would be both lesswork, and a lot more profitable for them... I really don't like that caliper design btw.
2/21/2010 11:29:40 AM
no, not a Honda specific shop. and yeah, i hate that design, too.
2/21/2010 2:56:22 PM
I'd go to a Honda shop before I replace those calipers. Calipers going out after around 100k miles is somewhat premature, unless the car was tracked very often.
