From a poster over on PackPride…

I know everyone is going to say this is my first post, so believe it or not. I have watched this board for a long time. I would not let my Wolpackers down. This one I have to tell. I saw NDWOLFPACK post about the flight at 11:16. I live in Brier Creek and busted my butt to get out there. I ran into Southern Jet and all was empty. About 10 seconds later Lee Fowler walked in the door and behind him was about five guys including JOHN CALIPARI. My heart dropped. John was wearing a black sweatsuit and looked worn out. There was another guy that also had black hair combed back in that group of five. I told John we need ya and he smiled. Lee Fowler was the only wolfpacker. That its boys, would not let my wolfpackers down. What a high, I’m still shaking.

Yeah I didnt catch an actual time, but last night yes.

Also WTVD apparently pulled the paparazzi job and had some guys staked out at the RBC last night - http://sportsblog.abc11tv.com/.

Quote :
"Late night look at the RBC?
Haven't written anything in awhile - but had to drop something off during this Calipari chaos. BTW for PR value - Lee Fowler is playing this like Yo Yo Ma on the cello. It's a frenzy!

Anyway - to the point of this:

10:43pm last night: Charlie Mickens and Joe Mazur are staked out at the RBC Center. Out of the blue - a Lincoln Navigator drives through the back security entrance and straight inside the building.

10:58pm: Exactly 15 minutes later, the same Navigator pulls back out. We have video in which it sure looks like Lee Fowler is driving. He gasses it when he sees Charlie's camera. In the passenger seat is an unidentified man in a yellow golf shirt (not Calipari). There are clearly two people in the back seat. One wearing a white baseball cap, another appearing to be a man with dark hair.

Lee Fowler has a Lincoln Navigator registered in his name. 15 mins seems like a good amount of time to quickly scope out the RBC Center. I'm just saying.

We'll have the video tomorrow at 6pm. Although something tells me it may be irrelevant by then.
"

Thanks for the info, but some losers at WTVD.

By the way, how is his named pronounced? Ive heard the media pronounce it both "Cal-ah-par-ee" and "Cal-ah-pair-ee".

i'm sure this has probably been posted already, but i didn't have internet all night and i don't feel like reading what i missed. this was posted on statefansnation:

Quote :
"Listen up folks. I work at a media outlet in West Tennessee, I graduated NC State class of ‘98, and I feel comfortable in putting my credibility on the line with this:

Look for a late morning/early afternoon announcement of a 4:00pm EST press conference tomorrow to introduce John Calipari as the new men’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University.

Now…..as with everything we’ve seen over the past week, nothing is 100% certain, but I trust what I’ve just been told by someone involved in the local coverage here."

"I personally think that he's coming here. No way we offered him less than $2.0 Million, since we had that money to give to Barnes I'm assuming we'd pull out all the stops to land Calipari

PROOF:
-Cal knows we offered Barnes that much money and would be insulted if we offered him $300,000 less.
-We already publicly lost our first choice for the job, if we lost our second choice too then that would be embarrassing, and few coaches would want to be someone's third option.
-Oblinger and Fowler flew in Murphy's jet to Memphis on a Sunday for a 2 hour meeting. You'd think that they would stay as long as it took to get a yes out of him if they made that sort of trip.
-Calipari came out of the meeting and said he was 'overwhelmed' with the amount of money we offered him. He was probably expecting 1.5-1.7 million, an offer of 2.0+ would be 'overwhelming' to someone with those expectations."

He definetly was in Raleigh last night...

Quote :
"Calipari tours Raleigh campus with assistant coaches
By Andy Katz
ESPN.com

Coach John Calipari, who has been in negotiations with Memphis about increasing the value of his current contract, visited North Carolina State with his staff Monday, a source close to Calipari told ESPN.com.

A source at NC State confirmed to ESPN.com that Calipari and his staff were in Raleigh late Monday. An offer is on the table and Calipari will likely decide within the next two days if he will accept the job.

The source close to the coach said Calipari and his staff boarded a private jet to Raleigh on Monday afternoon to look at the Wolfpack's facilities. Later in the day, the source was told that the coach and his assistants were touring NC State's campus and were planning to fly back to Memphis on Monday night.

NC State officials began wooing Calipari by visiting with the Memphis coach Sunday night, The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported. NC State is making a strong push for Calipari now that it has been rebuffed by Texas coach Rick Barnes, who reportedly will receive a sizable raise.

The meeting, which included NC State Chancellor James L. Oblinger, athletic director Lee Fowler and other university officials, lasted for about two hours, the paper reported.

"We were aware of the meeting," Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson told the paper Sunday night. But beyond that, he declined comment while continuing to attempt to rework the contract of Calipari.

Fowler, who once worked for Dana Kirk at Memphis, has strong ties to the area and has had intermediaries working Calipari for weeks.

If Calipari takes the NC State job, this would go against what he told ESPN.com last week. When directly asked if he would be interested in replacing Herb Sendek (who left the program for Arizona State), Calipari said "no." He said he wouldn't want to put himself in the position of dealing with all that goes into coaching within the Triangle alongside Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams. Calipari is the king of Conference USA and essentially rules that conference; the Tigers are its marquee program.

But taking a trip to Raleigh certainly is a bold move that shows he could be ready to take the job. Memphis is doing whatever it can to match NC State's offer. NC State reportedly offered Barnes a deal worth more than $2 million per year.

If Calipari is not interested in coaching NC State, then the Wolfpack are expected to turn to LSU's John Brady. If Calipari leaves, look for Memphis to seriously consider Colorado's Ricardo Patton, a native of the area who retains strong ties to the region."

Seriously though, if he doesn't come for this reason, I think we would be better off without him. We really need someone that is up to the challenge of rebuilding the program to what it was, and compete with the other NC schools. If hes scared of that, then lets move on.

I doubt his comment about not wanting to deal with coaching in the Triangle against Coach K and Roy reflects what he really feels. I'm sure he just said it to dodge the question. He seems like the type who would thrive off the competition.

news & disturber is reporting that cal was offered $1.9mil by memphis... hopefully this doesn't turn into bad news for us.

Calipari watch
John Calipari has a decision to make, and the money is roughly the same whether he coaches N.C. State or stays at Memphis for the 2006-07 college basketball season.

The Tigers' coach on Monday was offered a salary increase from a potential $1.5 million annually to about $1.9 million, which is close to the package being floated by the Wolfpack.

State's offer is in the $2 million annual range for the next five or six seasons.

There is no deadline for Calipari to make a decision, but both sides expect an answer before the end of the week.

The big question for Wolfpack fans is if not Calipari, then who?

That's really the biggest unknown on the wide screen. Among State's hierarchy, there is a decent degree of sentiment for Louisiana State's John Brady, but it's hardly overwhelming.

If Calipari says no, the search could go almost anywhere.

all that raise does is tells us that Cal leaving won't be because of money.. the strained relationship between Cal and RC may benefit us. Cal had to request raises for him and his staff, so Memphis is playing catch-up.

^Not to mention Cal hadn't received a raise in 4 years, only got a 5% raise following the best season in school history (before we came calling), and his assistants are paid less than the Memphis football assistants and far less than UT basketball assistants.

It isn't going to be just about the money, but simply having to fight with the AD to get close to market rate for him and his staff should leave a bad taste in his mouth.

It would be great if they did have the Press Conference at Reynolds where students could come. It'd be nice to show the media that NC State Students are excited and united about a new coach.
