The Triangle area just got Street-viewed.I found my house, and my roommate's car.
2/12/2008 9:59:35 AM
sweet, good find! i've been wondering when they were going to add us. The pictures look like they're from the early fall. The leaves are still green, but there is a new building beside my office that shows up that has only been there a couple months
2/12/2008 11:45:29 AM
man this is awesome
2/12/2008 11:54:33 AM
hell yea
2/12/2008 12:37:57 PM
ha, my car is at two houses. one where i used to live in durham and one right after i moved in where i live now. they must have taken the photos in durham before sept. and in north raleigh right around the first of october.
2/12/2008 12:51:11 PM
wonder if anybody will get caught cheating or with somebody they aren't suppose to be with because of this
2/12/2008 2:05:41 PM
i wonder if how many people will get robbed because of this
2/12/2008 2:12:15 PM
true, what's a rich ass neighborhood in Raleigh? i wanna look at some big houses
2/12/2008 2:13:16 PM
^^ mhum.... because before this, rich people and nice houses were anonymous....
2/12/2008 2:15:55 PM
my car is on street view! hooray!
2/12/2008 2:31:27 PM
they need to do this shit in gboro
2/12/2008 2:34:00 PM
2/12/2008 2:47:13 PM
yeah, i understand the point. my point is, i seriously doubt there are would-be house robbers sitting around "casing out" houses to rob on Google Maps. but whatever, maybe i just don't have the mind of a criminal
2/12/2008 2:56:02 PM
just have a visit to your local public library and check out who uses the computers...
2/12/2008 3:05:50 PM
that's retarded. streetview has been out a long time now and i haven't heard of any crime sprees brought on streetview. FUD as far as i'm concerned
2/12/2008 3:15:30 PM
If anything the places where you can actually look up property value would be much worse than street view is.
2/12/2008 3:52:42 PM
haha, this is fun
2/12/2008 3:54:17 PM
yeah, i agree. just FUD. lots of people like to pretend like before Google they were just safe and anonymous. Yes, Google has made lots of personal information more easily accessible, but they're not actually creating or publishing anything new. All that data was already there for someone who was motivated enough to find it. The benefits to the public in general from the information Google and others now make it easy to find I think far outweighs the slight chance that information could be used maliciously.
2/12/2008 3:54:34 PM
2/12/2008 3:57:27 PM
yeah i mean like just now to find a nice house to look at on street view i still had to use realtor.com and just searched for anything over $1M... it gives an address. obviously it'd be easy to find this house with or without google... seeing if say, it's not near anything else, is something useful with this (for a thief) but in all reality, it isn't going to matter. if somebody wants to steal something theyre going to, period
2/12/2008 3:59:12 PM
im just saying that yeah, while all of this information was available before google came along, it has never been nearly as EASY to get it. EASY = dumb people can do it = more percentage of criminals can do it...see where im going with this?have there been any studies on rates of home invasions before and after google streetview mapped out a city? i mean up until now they were only doing the very populated, dense cities, where privacy wasn't much of a concern to begin with. i think smaller cities are a lot more vulnerable to malicious use of streetview. again, just my opinion
2/12/2008 4:32:32 PM
yeah but dumb people don't plan shitit just happens
2/12/2008 5:15:10 PM
i dunnoi consult the internet before making any decision in life
2/12/2008 5:22:32 PM
this is scary, but so cool at the same time.
2/12/2008 5:32:01 PM
haha i can see two of my neighbors standing across from my house, waiting for the school bus, which i can see if i move up my street a ways.

they just released a "Google Maps Static API", where you can create images of Google Maps without using any scripting, kind of like their Charts API. you can use it when you want to embed a map of something/somewhere in a webpage, but you can't or don't want to use scripting, or you just want it to be a static image of a map instead of an interactive map. summary - http://googlemapsapi.blogspot.com/2008/02/google-maps-without-scripting.htmldocumentation - http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/staticmaps/examplefor some reason you can only use Map view or Mobile view.... no satellite
2/21/2008 5:18:30 PM
^ that is extremely handy. i have been wanting to use a small map view like that to put the location of a property on real estate websites, but i decided not to because it took so much time to load the maps application. good find!
2/21/2008 5:27:56 PM
its probably been mentioned but the Flight Simulator part of Google Earth v4.2 is pretty neat...i hooked a little USB gamepad up and mapped some of the controls and flew into Charlotte Douglas from JFK in an F-16...only crashed about 8 times before I 'successfully' landed near the parking deck

how is Sites any different from Groups
2/28/2008 2:29:58 PM
are you referring to the Google Page Creator feature in Groups?I think Sites is more focused on creating stand-alone websites or intranet sites, not necessarily just group discussions. And I think the features are more geared towards the CMS market. Since it apparently only runs right now in Google Apps for your Domain, I assume it is mostly pushed towards easily creating and maintaining intranet sites for small businesses
