Deceased G.O.P. Strategist’s Hard Drives Reveal New Details on the Census Citizenship Question

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/census-citizenship-question-hofeller.html

Quote :
"Files on those drives showed that [Thomas B. Hofeller] wrote a study in 2015 concluding that adding a citizenship question to the census would allow Republicans to draft even more extreme gerrymandered maps to stymie Democrats. And months after urging President Trump's transition team to tack the question onto the census, he wrote the key portion of a draft Justice Department letter claiming the question was needed to enforce the 1965 Voting Rights Act — the rationale the administration later used to justify its decision."

Quote :
"Mr. Hofeller's exhaustive analysis of Texas state legislative districts concluded that such maps 'would be advantageous to Republicans and non-Hispanic whites,' and would dilute the political power of the state’s Hispanics."

The government lying about a partisan rationale won't make a bit of difference to the conservative judges who were lied to.

Just FYI, HUGE decisions on redistricting and census happening this morning. Not an exaggeration that it can lock in counter-majorian rule for a generation.

Also, the direct result of progressive apathy to the courts for 3p years.

If no candidate reaches a majority I think it then goes to the house to decide so I think the thought process was to try and get to a point where no candidate would reach that and cause more chaos.

So by some people in Democrat winning states going for Kasich and some from republican winning states maybe doing that too and you somehow get enough, and although very unlikely to have happened easier to get some republicans to go Kasich to help block it than to go to Hillary.

Not sure if this makes sense typing it on phone.

Even if Democrats could win the White House and senate I'm skeptical they would even have the balls to increase the size of the SV which is the only option I can think of

Kavanaugh‘s fragile and hysterical demeanor during the interview process should have been enough to disqualify him for the job of Supreme Court Justice.

Never even mind the straight up lying or his past behavior.

Kavanaugh is there for 40 years. NOTHING we can do about it.

Susan Collins is there for months and she should be voted out and shunned.

I just don't get why anyone would go to the NYT and not some small, local paper. Do they want people to think the whole story is BS?

"In a sign that could spell more trouble for presidential oversight efforts, the Supreme Court on Monday signaled that it was not even sure whether the judicial branch had the authority to settle disputes over congressional subpoenas issued for President Trump’s financial documents."

I can’t wait to read the legal gymnastics on this one. Congress has been completing investigations since the George Washington Administration. The constitution explicitly gives Congress the power to perform investigations. Now SCOTUS isn’t even sure it can enforce a congressional subpoena? Pathetic.

It’s an absurdist comedy to see Trumps lawyer argue that the executive is too busy to deal with oversight on the day the president spent his morning yelling on twitter about what he was watching on the TeeVee.

And back I guess? Real roller coaster. This one was a "decline to take case" rather than decision

I know they heard Trump’s case on this tax records but I never heard and can’t find any updates on a decision. Is it normal for decisions to take this long?

^I think the deadline is still the end of June, but the court extended the deadline due to COVID19 delays. The decision could be released in July.

That case could go a hundred different ways but I’ve also seen some articles suggest it could be kicked back to the lower courts to resolve some technicalities, meaning we wouldn’t get a resolution until sometime next year or perhaps longer?

Hard to say if the slow walk is intentional or not (of course, I view it as a pretty open and shut case, it should be an easy decision).
