22 win season
10/20/2011 8:48:24 PM
Im already nauseous just thinking about the announcers gushing about his fresh start / name change
10/20/2011 11:16:27 PM
Now if he can convince everyone to start calling wins losses.
10/21/2011 3:16:38 AM
you mean start calling losses wins?
10/21/2011 5:16:10 AM
http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2011/10/21/the-importance-of-qualifications-gottfried-and-his-staff/Breakdown of Mark Gottfried and his staff. If credibility is measured by results, these guys appear several time more credible than the last coaching staff.
10/21/2011 12:18:06 PM
I don't really buy the successful players don't tend to make good coaches angle, but can't deny the prior results as coaches comparisons]
10/21/2011 12:28:04 PM
You're absolutely correct that it's not an axiom... always correct. I guess I just don't think that success as a player can be used as a credential for if someone is going to be a good coach. I don't think anyone would argue with that. Still, it's something that's brought up time and time again by various people trying to make points. Honestly, Amato is a good example of a SUCCESS. Yes, I said that correctly... a success. He was a great defensive player. Turns out he is a great DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. Obviously Sidney Lowe was a great "coach on the court", but turned out to be a bad "head coach on the sidelines of the court".
10/21/2011 1:36:42 PM
I don't know about that. Gott's last defense gave up a lot of touchdowns and was constantly burned on streak routes.
10/21/2011 1:39:04 PM
Has Chuck Amato ever been a defensive coordinator? Maybe you meant defensive assistant coach?
10/21/2011 2:02:35 PM
^^You mean Amato, right? If you're referring to the FSU defense he had when he left Raleigh, I'm not sure how much you can pin on him and how much of it is his predecessor since he had been on a figurative hiatus. If you're talking about Amato's last NC State defense, it's hard to tell what was the fault of the defense specifically, and what was caused by the defense having to spend so much time on the field.--------BTW, you are correct that Amato was never a DC. He served in a myriad of different defensive coaching positions and was an assistant head coach at FSU, but wasn't ever DC. Point is still valid, but thanks for the correction.[Edited on October 21, 2011 at 2:07 PM. Reason : Pointing to the wrong post.]
10/21/2011 2:04:08 PM
Amato actually was Defensive Coordinator at state under Bo Rein from 1976-1979.
10/21/2011 2:30:13 PM
sheesh. it was a troll comment based upon your post concerning Gott being a DC.
10/21/2011 3:01:34 PM
^I think I missed it. Before your comment, who stated Gottfried was a DC?
10/21/2011 3:13:05 PM

If it makes you feel better, I re-read what I posted 4 or 5 times to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious! [Edited on October 21, 2011 at 4:30 PM. couple of flirts
10/21/2011 4:40:59 PM
Breakdown in communication. Don't worry, since we won a football game, I'm sure people will be too busy pretending that NC State is mounting a comeback to talk about basketball... at least not until next week.
10/24/2011 9:13:46 AM
Right, becuase NC State message boards are filled with glass half-full posters.
10/24/2011 9:48:34 AM
I get your point, but neuroticism isn't just negative. Look no further than a couple years ago when Lowe's team beat top-ranked Duke and people were saying "this was the team we were waiting for!"But no... I get your point, and I'm definitely not optimistic about O'Brien. Hell, I wasn't optimistic after last season's 9-wins because I feared it was a "flash in the pan". I got torched on StateFansNation for suggesting such a thing at the end of last season.

I think the transition of the team, in Gottfried's eyes, is interesting. When he first began working with this team, understandably, he stated that 'this isn't an NCAA Tournament team". Maybe that was just something to get the team humbled, but the rhetoric has definitely changed. Now he's calling us a "mystery team". I really like what he's doing so far, but obviously it'll all be useless unless he can produce on the court.
10/26/2011 2:35:43 PM
I don't expect us to be in the top 3 but I really believe we can finish in the top 5. I really think Gottfried is going to shape these guys into a solid team.
10/26/2011 5:25:21 PM
Has this guy jumped out of a plane yet? If not, 100% not credible.
10/26/2011 5:30:45 PM
^To be fair, it wasn't his idea in the first place.

I too like what im reading about toughening these guys up. I don't know if any of you will remember or notice, but the last 10 years at least, 5 of Herb and 5 of Lowe, i don't think ive ever seen a team get more of their dunks and putbacks blocked. It would happen to us, what seemed like, once a game. And that's toughness and finishing and not being a pussy. Lo and CJ bring that. CJ just not consistently, but the rest of these guys were definitely not tough enough. If i was coach, id take their ass up to some public courts in NYC, let them get their asses handed to them by some high schoolers and playground heroes and show them what being tough on the ball court looks like.

Son is an 8th grader at Martin (think he has a 7th grade son too) age wise he should be a 9th grader, but they held him back /creepster
