Re: Timing of BD Firing Spells More Trouble
Let's cut through all the crap. Davis was used as a scape goat. The powers that be are scared crapless that a big penaltly is coming.

They got together and decided, let's fire Davis and clean house. then, when they answer the NCAA they can say, all that were responsibly are gone so .... please Mr. NCAA don't hurt us too bad, we have been good boys since we found out about the allegations.

Final, why isn't teflon Badman gone? He was in control when all this happened. If Davis is responsible, why isn't he.

There are 50,00 ambulance chasers out there licking their chops tonight howling to file a law suit for Davis. In fact, I bet 25,000, has already called him.

I love that gem, I hope he does sue them so the judge laughs him out of court. But he can keep using the I didn't know defense

maybe i'm conditioned, but that powederblue/white format is irritating

but this 11:27 post of a CHeel "all-american" was pretty good:

Quote :
"While this decision was long-coming, why isn't it a reasonable proposition to fire the man who oversaw the most serious and endemic athletics violations in the modern history of UNC, if not ever?

1) He hired an agent's agent on staff. Blake was being paid significant money by an agent.
2) He oversaw a program that allowed a runner access to the football team.
3) He oversaw a program where multiple players took impermissible benefits. Whether ridiculous rules or not, those are the rules that the players and coaches agreed to live by.
4) He oversaw a program that contained massive academic fraud. Tutors doing homework for student-athletes. Athletes not complying with clearly stated standards for citation and plagiarism.
5) Again, other relatively minor crap like a dozen players with hundreds of parking tickets and dozens of license plates among them.

In the span of less than two years!

What standards do we have if this goes unchecked?

Did the reputation of UNLV not suffer during the Tarkanian days? Was FSU not known as Free Shoes U? Have most of us not taken some delight in the State does of Valvano and Shackleford?

The idea that his was a witch hunt, or completely shocking and totally unnecessary, is beyond me. I don't understand why it didn't happen before, but with the scope of violations becoming more and more clear, it's hard to contemplate that this would be allowed to continue indefinitely."

The idea that his was a witch hunt, or completely shocking and totally unnecessary, is beyond me. I don't understand why it didn't happen before, but with the scope of violations becoming more and more clear, it's hard to contemplate that this would be allowed to continue indefinitely.

BATarHeel05:

1.) NOBODY knew he was doing that. If they did, why would they support that? It brought NO benefit to UNC, and, obviously, significant risk/damage. Blake was fully vetted by the NCAA and UNC before he was hired. Even NCAA rules say that a head coach can't be held responsible for an assistant that is actively engaged in trying to keep his inappropriate actions secret.

2.) This "runner" was a former player, and was gaining access with another former player. Letterman are, and should be, welcomed back. He is only a "runner" in so much as the NCAA decided to retroactively label him as that. Further, much of this contact was during the summer, when NCAA rules prevent the coaches from having significant contact with the athletes and limit the amount of participation hours.

3.) Some legitimately took impermissible benefits. This is really Butch Davis's fault? Really? This wasn't like USC where they were getting gifts and cash in the locker room. They were getting impermissible benefits during the summer, on breaks, outside of the program. When uncovered, Butch took the appropriate actions - he suspended the players, based not on guilt, but on suspicion. What more do you want? You really believe that a manager should be held directly responsible for the illegal actions of his reports? If you go out and get a DUI, your boss should be fired?

4.) The Head Football Coach is not in charge of the Academic Support Program. In fact, the University intentionally builds a "wall" between these two to ensure that the ASP is legit and not influenced by coaches who might be enticed to make sure their players are "taken care of" academically. It can't be any clearer. Butch Davis was not responsible for hiring tutors, for assigning tutors, for overseeing tutors. Butch Davis had NOTHING to do with the athlete's academics. He was the football coach!

5.) First, be honest ONE player had dozens of license plates. Beyond that, again, why is the football coach in charge of parking enforcement in your mind? If there was a serious issue with parking, and he was made aware of it and did nothing to address it, that would be one thing. But that wasn't the situation. College kids parked illegally. OH NO!!! Seriously, that's the end of the story. LOTS of college kids get LOTS of parking tickets. Heck, parking tickets seems like it's a million dollar industry at UNC. The mere fact that anyone is even trying to add this to a list of accusations is really just more evidence for the cowardice and dishonesty of the position.

I think that **** was the right man for the job.

It's now time to see how the team stays together this year and if UNC could go get Urban or if one of the Asst. Coaches steps up as an interim guy.

Time will tell, but recruiting is gonna suck for the next few months until a permanent replacement is found.]

did anyone hear Mark Paschal and Greg Barnes this am on 99.9? For some reason they are still backing Butch and Paschal had the audacity to proclaim unx as some beacon of academic light even with the academic probe of the investigation and the honor court hilarity. Apparently Butch really hammered it into his players to go to class, do the work, and represent the university always. Sadly a few individuals decided to not listen to the ole ball coach and ruined unx's reputation.

"Looking at the wording of Thorp's statement, as well as how surprised Butch sounded in his, I can think of only one halfway plausible reason that Butch got fired this close to the season. Thorp and Baddour must have gotten confirmation--either from an internal probe or from the NCAA--that McAdoo's paper was a steaming pile of plagiarism. It's more likely the confirmation was on our end, since the NCAA has been letting us handle the academic side of the investigation so far."

They go on and on. Yeah, I'm sure that if Baddour steps down it's totally on his own accord and it's because he's so upset about the firing of Davis. This is so absurd that it's hilarious but equally frustrating and confounding.

And some Hole's letter to Baddour:
Quote :
" Dear Mr. Baddour,

I would like to go on the record as one of your Tar Heels fans that are very upset with the way the firing of Coach Davis was handled and the implications that will follow.

I have been a lifetime Carolina fan. I follow all sports, but have a passion for football. As you know that is difficult at times in a basketball crazy school. For the first time, regardless of the NCAA investigation, I felt Carolina was on the verge of turning and football was going to be great.

When Butch Davis was hired, I felt like the administration was serious about football. Then the investigation. The entire time you all stood behind the coach. If there had been any thought of firing him, the decision should had been at the end of the football season. I am simply shocked, angered, and perplexed that you all decided to fire Coach Davis a few short weeks before football camp. This is alarming to say the least.

There better be a great reason to do this or I am afraid the financial responsibility of the university will be great, not only from the stand point of the salary of the coach, but the Blue Zone support, Rams Club support, as well as fan support at the games.

I feel the way this was handled was wrong. In one decision, you have turned the football program on top of it's head and placed the players and fans in a very awkward position. Not only that, you and the Board of Trustees appear weak. You all seem to have caved to the media and the ABC crowd. I take it you know what ABC stands for. I also feel you threw Coach Davis under the bus.

Last year I had the honor of having Coach Davis and his family on my flight to Paris when he was vacationing. We spoke about the upcoming season before the investigation broke out. His enthusiasm and love for North Carolina was clear. I walked away feeling like this man was sincere and honest. If he is to be faulted, it is for being too trusting. But what you all have done is unforgiving to not only him, but the entire university.

Where do we go from here at Carolina? Here we are faced with another uncertain year with no leader. All of this has left a sour taste in my mouth. How you and the board handles the next few days and weeks will depend on my support of not only Carolina football, but Carolina sports in general.

At this moment, I would like to wash my hands of the entire athletic department. The last 24 hours and the way you all treated Coach Davis and the football program was tacky, unprofessional, and careless. You caved to the pressure. You all speak of the Carolina Way. If this is indeed the Carolina Way, I will take a pass and place my support elsewhere.

Thank you for your time,"

LOL...

Knowing UNC, there probably will be a lot of empty seats next year. Not necessarily because of a protest of the university though, more because they're terrible football fans.

*I am not ashamed to be a Tar Heel, and I won't be ashamed tomorrow.

*I'm not quite sure how to feel or who to blame after the PC. My impression was that Baddour came across as a guy who loves Carolina and is disappointed in the whole process, and Thorp is an academigeek who seems out of touch with all but the classroom. That's not unusual in higher ed, trust me.

*Life will go on.

*I'm taking the extra Carolina magnets off - off of my washing machine - and putting them all over my Jeep. Now is not the time to back down. I'll wear Carolina gear everywhere, every day, because that's how therev rolls (and when your body is shaped like mine, it's easy to roll).

*It is curious why Butch wasn't fired "for cause" and $2.7 million saved. Perhaps that's not the Carolina Way, but none of this mess has been the Carolina Way all along.

*The interim will come from inside. Just a gentle reminder: the last time Carolina faced a scandal, Carolina hired a little known assistant coach who was asked to run a clean program. His name was Dean E. Smith. The rest is history. I pray that such lightning strikes twice.

*I'm therabidrev, and I'm a Tar Heel. And if you're not, I suggest that you Silence Those Feeble Utterances. And don't let the screen door hit you on the way out."

From comment section of Dan Wiederer article:

Quote :
"Butch Davis was the best football coach in UNC's history, there is no chance we'll find another coach of his caliber. He was not linked to Blake's illegal activities and accepted full responsibility for returning the program to respectability. If UNC had done the right thing and supported him during this process it's hard to imagine how successful we would have become over the next decade. I'd like to call for an investigation of the UNC Board of Trustees. If they have a misstep in their past, they should step down immediately. That is the standard they held Butch Davis to."
