one thing about the packaging I noticed right off hand is that Apple skimped out on the microfiber screen wipe that came with every iPhone, laptop, LCD monitor i've purchased from them.

No moreso than the case of a standard MacBook pro nowadays... it's solid, brushed metal, not the same material they're using on current iPod Touches.

finally all synced up. my first reaction is that the typing while holding the device in one hand felt so natural. I didn't even think about it...but this might also be due to the fact that I'm used to the iPhone.

Might have to get one in the next few weeks. I think i can live with the wifi only model without GPS. I've got an iPhone if i need to know my exact position and google maps still works on the iPad. Not to mention i can tether the iPad to my iPhone for internet anywhere.

I'm wondering how easy it will be to convert e-pub books over to the iPad ibook standard. I know there's apps like Stanza, but the Apple one looked so cool.

Just walked into the apple store and got Azaka his iPad. They still have a bunch, no lines but it's crowded.

Also I just noticed it has native spell check.

I would wait until version 2 comes out. Remember the original iPhone? Then a year later, the Iphone 3g came out?

it amazes me that people havent learned to wait for V2

not only do they fix any problems that they may have missed in testing but its usually cheaper (albeit because of all the idiots who already made them their money on the 1g)

I too have to say that I'm a little baffled they didn't wait til 4G came out this summer to release it, I guess 3G is fast enough.... but you know it's coming.

Does this thing not charge plugged into a pc? Read a tweet that it only charges when connected to a mac. Can't imagine that's true

^^^ what? The technology is going to improve no matter what. Why wait forever? Most issues from here on will be software, until new networks emerge wide scale. You don't wait for the next big thing if this big thing already addresses your problem.

^ apple wouldn't have released it with a problem like that.

I imagine it has something to do with the juice delivered to the USB port, and apple not wanting to blow peoples hardware.

There is probably some logic in the driver that tells the iPad to initiate a charge if its directly connected to the Mac USB port. Since they designed those ports, they know the exact amperage available at them.

Not too far fetched to be a "feature".

would definitely suggest getting a case. Helps with the angle and slickness. Keyboard is ok, just have to get used to it, can type a lot faster on my iphone than I can on here so far. The newspaper apps are particularly nifty

Nothing, I just thought no one was buying this.

I'm pretty ignorant on the ipad subject, other than the failure at competing with nook and kindle aspect.

See I know there will always be something better coming out with each new version. But like the iPhone I like getting in on the ground floor with every intention of buying the 2nd, 3rd and any other gen that comes out. It's a hobby of mine to waste money on "cool" gadgets.

If you have netflix check that out too. It's really cool.

Also I am finding typing on this thing is a breeze in most positions. Typing in landscape with two hands is a heck of a lot faster then on the iPhone and almost as fast as a standard keyboard. I was skeptical about it before trying it out for myself but now Im convinced.

Don't know about you, but the steam games I've purchased cost me less than 1/2 what the boxed version did at the time. That discount is more than I would have ever been able to resell the game for.

And steam has a guest pass system specifically to share games with friends and family who have steam but haven't purchased the titles. So, that's how you share them. And you can always sell your steam account (and with it all the titles you have) to someone else.

Your second argument only holds water IF the net price paid (purchase - resell) is lower for physical games. And in my experience that doesn't always hold water, especially for games and media outside the big publishers.

And for every DS game sold, there are 2-3x iPhone/iPod games and apps sold, so apparently people don't care as much about physical media as you seem to think.

Not really no. Kindle is more a dedicated e-reader. I'm sure i'd do light reading/news articles on an iPad, but i'd still use my e-reader for extended reading. LCDs just don't cut it for reading.

I'd really like to check out one of these e-ink devices for comparison because i find it easy to read on this display so it's hard for me to imagine what could be better. Not that I don't doubt it though just haven't experienced it yet.

^First of all how much do you actually read? Like a book a week? A month? If you only casually read the news and maybe a book every now and then it won't matter so much to you.

In regard to comparing an LCD to an e-book reader. Just pick up a paperback book and compare that to an iPad. An e-ink display pretty much looks like a paperback book. My Sony e-reader is actually clearer than some of my older paper backs (ink fades over time).

Now if you think reading on a back-lit LCD is easier than reading a paperback book then there's something wrong with your eyes. But i promise you reading on an e-ink display is much easier and more pleasant than reading on an LCD. My eyes just start to water after too long reading on an LCD (i have better than perfect version in both eyes and tried using my iPhone to read. Didn't cut it) but then again i do read a lot.

i was very surprised how true this is the first time i saw e-ink. no lcd or whatever light emitting screen is going to duplicate something that looks like writing on paper like e-ink.

I read a lot of design books but don't read often when it comes to a novel here and there. Not as much as I'd like at least. When i travel I always travel with a design book or two so i don't really have the extra room to take light reading with me which is why I think the iPad might benefit me in that sense. Design books are generally large so they take up too much room in the bag.

^i bought the apple case. I compared it to all the 3rd party ones and it seemed to be the best. It's not great but it works well enough so that's really not saying much for the 3rd party stuff either. It works very well for propping the display up at an angle or even standing it up and it still keeps the iPad thin. The incase leather folio was literally twice as thick without the iPad and twice the price ($60) so wasn't worth it. The other cases were just simple sleeves by incase. Now that i think about it it's really not that bad. My first reaction before putting the ipad in it was WTF is that shit but after getting the iPad in and using it its grown on me.

I quite like the apple case tho it is a bitch to get the damn thing out of it. I also hate letting other people use it now. I have VERY dry fingers to the point where I don't even leave fingerprints behind on the glass and it's annoying as hell when I get it back and I can feel the oil from the other person touching it.

"While Apple has pitched the iPad as a "third" device between a phone and a PC, the tablet does not synchronise easily with the two according to Ian Fogg, an expert analyst at Forrester.

"Apple has left too much in the hands of consumers to transfer and manage manually," he wrote in a blog post.

"Tethered sync is a 20th Century product feature."
"

From CNN

I disagree with the first part. It's no more complicated than an iphone or iPod sync. It being locked into iTunes for syncing aside the actual process is simple enough. I feel that it's too simple and doesn't allow for enough configuring.

I do agree completely with the last point though. This thing has 802.11n there is no excuse not to allow over the air syncing. The only time I should be tethered to a cable with a device like this is for charging. I hope that eventually apple will allow this feature. From my understanding the zune HD does it and does it very well so apple needs to get on board. Especially since they push the whole cloud feature with MobileMe and having your contacts sync among other things the moment you add new ones. It would be nice if I download something on the iPad while at home it will auto sync it to my computer.

Seems to be the biggest rumor buzzing around for 4.0.

While I can live without it for AIM (thanks to PUSH) it would be great for Pandora. If they do go multitasking route I hope they implement expose functionality.
