Task killers usually do more harm than good. There's tons of stuff out advising against them.

until someone cracks the backflip and allows me to stop/remove the bloatware, task killers are key to me having a speedy, non-battery hogging android experience.

what about the updated eris software? when's that coming out?also, i have never turned on my wifi on my droid eris.. the 3G network works fine for me. what's the benefit of the wifi if i can get on internet without it?[Edited on March 21, 2010 at 1:08 PM. Reason : ya]
3/21/2010 1:02:52 PM
Wifi access is usually faster.
3/21/2010 1:10:16 PM
hmm...i guess it is just preference then b/c i have had no complaints about the speed of the 3g so far... i guess downloading stuff or streaming could make a difference
3/21/2010 1:11:10 PM
web browsing on the Eris is noticeably faster with wifi for me. I've started keeping it on full-time unless I've used my phone a lot more than normal that day and the battery starts running low.
3/21/2010 1:19:19 PM
i turned on wifi but nothing changed... does it automatically connect to networks? I guess it doens't since it hasn't connected to one yet and there are 3 available
3/21/2010 2:05:03 PM
For initial connection, you need to go into Wifi Settings, select the network and enter the network key if needed. Then anytime you turn on wifi, it should connect to that network. That's for the Droid but I'm sure it's similar on the Eris. [Edited on March 21, 2010 at 2:40 PM. Reason : ]
3/21/2010 2:39:47 PM
^Yeah, same thing for the Eris. If it's an open network, you still have to tell it to connect the first time & then it'll remember and reconnect from then on.
3/21/2010 2:51:01 PM
around charlotte i get ~3MB/s off of 3g so I'm not complaining there. If I go out to eat or shopping or something I might turn on wifi to see if I can get faster internet, but there's nothing slow about 3 mb/s on my phone.I don't know if AT&T is supposed to be finished with the 7.2 MB/s network upgrade in charlotte, and my phone is able to reach those speeds, but I haven't gotten near them yet
3/21/2010 5:32:49 PM
I'm not sure if any of you guys have seen this yet, but it's been on Youtube for a while... the pictures I've seen show that it comes with a red-orange colored back & a black colored backhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYbnP_cWR00&feature=player_embedded(please embed)Yes, I know a.) The video is horrible b.) He is speaking Spanish through half of it c.) He can't hold the camera/phone still.

it'd be nice if the guy filming it wasn't drunk. Looks good though other than that red back. Hopefully they market it with the other back cover

sell me- my wife and i need new phones really soon. her blackberry trackball is falling off and my 'm' key doesn't work. should we go ahead and get droids, or continue to wait to see incredibles? my concern is the difference in price where the droid is usually bogo and the incredible is (blank) but with nice specs i guess. we'd both be getting the same models.
3/23/2010 2:45:31 PM
^you kinda hit the points.both about the same, except:Droid, heavy, QWERTY keyboard, a 'tad' slower, unless rooted, 2 for $199 (or 2 for $99 if you are new every 2)Incredible, light, no keyboard, faster processor, $?FWIW, I don't know anyone who doesn't like their Droid[Edited on March 23, 2010 at 3:56 PM. Sonia and I have Droids. Maybe that will help you make up your mind.
3/23/2010 4:30:28 PM
I only held BigMan157's Droid for a second and while I wasn't big on the feel of it, it certainly wasn't what I'd consider "heavy".
3/23/2010 4:47:16 PM
it's not heavy, just the heaviest of the bunch, by comparison
3/23/2010 5:02:22 PM
It's not light but I wouldn't consider it heavy by any means. It weighs 6oz v 4.8 for the iphone 3gs , 6.3 for the Touch Pro 2 and ~4.6 for the Nexus One. It basically comes down to whether or not you want a physical keyboard. The Droid's isn't that great but it's definitely beneficial to have. If you can live with a full touch screen device, wait for the Incredible and others. Verizon is a BOGO whore so you'll likely find a sale on the Incredible at release or soon after.sprint announces the HTC Evo 4Ghttp://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/03/18/google-nexus-one-for-att-shipping-with-bad-displays/More nexus one issueshttp://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/03/18/google-nexus-one-for-att-shipping-with-bad-displays/

^yea, but took them 3+ months before they did BOGO on the Droid

With the announcement of the HTC EVO and that 4G is coming to my city by the end of the year, I'm switching to Sprint the day the EVO comes out. Dual-band WiMAX+EV-DO (4g & 3g)? Check. 8mp camera with flash and 720p video recording? Check. Front-facing camera for video chat? Check. HDMI out? Check.Huge-ass, brilliant screen? Check.1ghz Snapdragon with 512MB RAM and 1GB internal storage? Check.Sense UI on top of Android 2.1? Check. This phone is a beast.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M59rt8RSkD0Definitely a beast of a phone. Same weight (6oz) and thickness as the droid but .2" taller and wider. Not sure I'd want anything bigger than to carry around on a daily basis but it looks pretty badass.
3/23/2010 8:30:49 PM
damn, that seems like a sweet phone. I might have to finally give up my SERO for this.
3/23/2010 9:07:50 PM
^sadly I was thinking the same thing... I freaking love my blackberry and cheap plan, but that phone is a tank.
3/23/2010 9:24:59 PM
Yeah, but you can get 23% off the bottom line by being affiliated with the university, that certainly helps a bunch.

definitely getting the supersonic this summer....barring any major glitches or bugs. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Does android have a divx player yet? I would really like to switch from WM, but there were just too many applications missing last time I asked around. Skyfire, slingplayer, Garmin XT (although I hear google navigate comes close), and remote desktop. I anyone could correct my understanding, it would be appreciated.

NEED ADVICE FROM DROID OWNERS:I am very familiar with android and rooting, but I have only dealt with the G1 and Nexus.Buddy wants to root and flash the 2.1 OTA update that Motorola failed to push out last week. A few of the questions we have are the following, any help appreciated:1 - Is the 2.1 OTA available for download somewhere?2 - Which recovery image do you recommend?3 - Which root instructions for the droid do you consider the best? (I know the droid is easy to root, but was curious if a certain guide was better)4 - If the 2.1 OTA is not available, which custom ROM would you suggest... would prefer one that does NOT use apps to SD as he does not want to change out the 16GB stock card for a class 4/6 one, which I consider necessary for a2sd.5 - I assume you can use apps like Root Explorer to remove the verizon preinstalled apps, or did you use the android sdk and a command prompt?[Edited on March 24, 2010 at 11:38 AM. Download an app called dmupdater by going to http://downloads.droidmod.org/dmupdater-10.apk on your phone. It should root and install the recovery image. http://droidmod.org is the link to their webpage. As for a 2.1 rom, there are a few floating around. Best place to check is probably http://alldroid.org. I'm running Pete's Bugless Beast 2.1 v 0.7 rom and it's pretty smooth. Haven't felt the need to upgrade to his latest update. Think I'm going to stick with that one until the guys over there get the bugs worked out of the SenseUI port.
3/24/2010 11:47:20 AM
I am a huge fan of cyanogen (and also SuperD)... looks like someone has ported his ROM to the Droid.http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?/topic/526-cyanogenmod-for-droid-v5053-03232010/Anyone with a droid willing to try this ROM and let me know if its better than BB or any others. Cyanogen IS the best ROM cooker.Would be really curious what you guys think of this ROM.Also, clockwork recovery seemed to be really popular by looking at people signatures. Where can I get this?
3/24/2010 12:16:21 PM
If I get bored I might give it a try but I'm kind of attached to wifi tether. Looks like the Rom manager app that is mentioned in that thread can flash clockworkmod recovery
3/24/2010 1:20:18 PM
You can just download wifi tether though right?http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/Cyan's roms are always very fast and stable. I have no reservations in recommending you flash it. Be sure and do a nandroid backup though just in case would really love it if you could flash, my buddy plans to root tonight. Thanks man!
3/24/2010 1:40:48 PM
ha...installed and it's super fast but I have no market or gmail app.
3/24/2010 2:39:18 PM
ok, got it. you have to dowload that google addon file, rename it update.zip and put it on the root of your sd card. Then just apply update.zip in recovery.

3/24/2010 3:38:07 PM
haha, what recovery do you use? You have to rename your files update.zip still?Amon_RA has recovery's for many devices where you can flash anything... does not need to be renamed. Thanks for flashing man... how does it compare?
