it WOULD be better if it let you stick a network drive (that's not hosted on a windows machine) in a library without having to1) create a dummy folder2) add the folder to the library3) get rid of the folder and replace it with mklinkbut since that's what I have to do, it's fucking retarded.

yeah, yeah, i know...Noen is a microsoft god and he's always right...i don't know what the hell i was thinking, not licking his asshole every time he graces me with his opinion the opinions of others matter very little to me once i've tried their suggestions and they've not panned out

i really like control panel search. works great, much easier than trying to browse for stuff in a huge list, in a layout that changes every version of windows
8/22/2009 12:44:39 PM
yea, i like that too. kind of spoiled by it though, lol. it finds things very well
8/22/2009 12:45:29 PM
yeah seriously. same thing with start menu search, even though that's been in since vista. i've been setting up win2k3 VMs all week and i'm constantly like "FUCK I JUST WANNA GET TO DEVICE MANAGER WHY I GOTTA CLICK LIKE 30 SCREENS"
8/22/2009 12:48:59 PM
i don't know if this has been answered or notI am running Windows 7 ultimate (the testing release from microsoft) can this be upgraded/bought when the full version comes out? really don't want to reinstall.
8/23/2009 10:04:30 PM
is it possible to move the little show desktop button from the lower right corner to inbetween the windows start button and the taskbar?
8/23/2009 10:06:29 PM
^ been wondering the same thing...i know this falls into the category of "been doing it this way for years and i don't want to change", but i'm not quite sure what prompted them to move it in the first place (maybe to put it near the show desktop contents menu, i assume)what i don't understand, though, is why it's over on the right to begin with...IF you're going to want to show the desktop, it stands to reason that your files/shortcuts/icons are going to be aligned to the left (since that's how most people work, left to right), so clicking "show desktop" on the right part of the screen, and then moving to the left to select whatever it was you were going to select seems counterproductivei think you can actually just right-click the taskbar and do "show desktop", but i'm not at my win7 box to check...i guess i could argue that adding an extra click was dumb, but i'm sure microsoft knows betteralso, http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/add-the-quick-launch-bar-to-the-taskbar-in-windows-7/[Edited on August 24, 2009 at 8:38 AM. 8/24/2009 8:34:23 AM
^^, ^^^ just use Win+D (it's got dat 190% keyboard shortcut efficiency). i always thought the show desktop quick launch button was retarded. one of the first things i always got rid of on new OS installs]
8/24/2009 9:19:36 AM
yea, me toowindows + d or windows + m is better anyways.[Edited on August 24, 2009 at 9:23 AM. Reason : d works better with two monitors for some reason]
8/24/2009 9:23:09 AM
ah, that's right...the windows key is USEFUL now
8/24/2009 9:24:42 AM
i've been using win+e, win+r and win+f (to a lesser extent) with great satisfaction for years. none of the others shortcuts seem that compelling to me, but i'll probably try to use them and see if they stick
8/24/2009 9:30:39 AM
lol, the windows key has been useful for years.all of these shortcuts have been around since at least XP.. (i mean the basic ones for minimize all, run and open explorer--the most useful, imo)
8/24/2009 9:33:37 AM
i was being sarcastic
8/24/2009 9:45:30 AM
oh
8/24/2009 9:47:52 AM
i thought i remembered someone on the previous pages saying that they never used the windows key before and someone linked to a "the windows key is useful now" article, detailing all of the shortcuts (half of which i don't think i'd use)okay, i admit it...poor execution also, fwiw, i like the show desktop button because i don't always have my keyboard next to me when i'm using the HTPC...sometimes just the mouse...so having the option of "show desktop" button in a place that makes sense would be nice
8/24/2009 9:53:34 AM
I like how I can double click on an ISO to burn it...but why won't Microsoft build ISO mounting support into Windows? Seems like you can do that in most other mainstream OSes
8/24/2009 12:50:09 PM
^ Isn't ISO mounting in W7?
8/24/2009 1:07:03 PM
I don't think so.
8/24/2009 1:23:02 PM
^ & ^^I wanna say that I saw something about mounting ISOs in the Disk Management console (diskmgmt.msc). Can't remember for sure and I didn't actually test it but you might check there and see what you find. This was in the Ultimate edition.[Edited on August 24, 2009 at 1:33 PM. Reason : Scratch that. It was creating and mounting VHDs that I saw. My bad.]

So, does daemon tools work with Windows 7?
8/24/2009 2:27:49 PM
i've been using http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm to mount ISOs. works great
8/24/2009 2:31:29 PM
Thanks for the info. Stuff I'm reading says that only daemon tools pro is compatible with Windows 7 (and costs 40 euro). I almost put the breaks on my planned upgrade based on that alone.Maybe daemon tools will come out with a lite version for Windows 7 shortly.

I installed a previous version of windows 7 on my netbook as a dual boot with XP. What's the best way to uninstall windows 7, specifically the dual boot start up screen?-oh and i don't have the win7 iso on my netbook currently. [Edited on August 24, 2009 at 7:16 PM. Reason : .]
8/24/2009 7:14:34 PM
edit the boot.ini file, remove the win7 entry, then delete the win7 partition (assuming it's not the boot partition)
8/24/2009 7:16:53 PM
Thanks. Going to try EasyBCD before i do it manually.-Ok deleted boot entry. I could just reformat the partition, but i've got other music/photos on that drive because it was the storage partition. How can i delete the windows/users/etc folders of windows 7? Keep getting the protected files warning when i try to delete anything.[Edited on August 24, 2009 at 7:35 PM. Reason : .]
8/24/2009 7:20:47 PM
^I would move your files to a temporary space, and format; then move the files into a clean XP NTFS partition. There are minor differences in NTFS and security policies from XP to 7 that will give you headaches from the XP side.

So for the second time in a row, I took my eSata external HDD home from work, and when I came back the drive was corrupt. I only noticed yesterday that windows explorer wouldn't show me files I had put there during the day until I told Windows to rebuild its indexing... What are the chances the indexing is screwing my file system up a little bit?
8/26/2009 12:47:57 PM
i had the same happen once.
8/26/2009 12:50:37 PM
^^You need to set the drive as a removeable drive in your disk management on 7. By default, all SATA drives are recognized and used as internal fixed disks. It is definitely getting wonked because of indexing. That's why adding network drives to libraries (non-indexed drives to an indexing view) is difficult.

Quick question, I recently reformatted and moved from XP to 7 RC 64-bit, computer runs great. However, when I play Call of Duty World at War, I seem to be getting frequent connection problems, it flashes "Connection Interupted" and then it goes away. My internet is Roadrunner Extreme, so I do not think that is the problem, and additionally, the game ran perfect on XP. Furthermore, I sometimes get connection problems, which leads me to think its my internal wireless ethernet card. I am thinking it may not be 100% windows 7 compatible, which is giving me these random "hiccups". Is it possible for me to buy a wireless router, and pick up signal from our other wireless router? I would plug my desktop into my own router, I feel I can get a better connection with a table-top router than with an internal PCI card. Do you think this would solve my problem? And is it possible to get internet through a router from a router? If so, do you know of any routers that work well with windows 7?
8/26/2009 1:38:54 PM
Run a cord to your existing router to figure out whether that is the problem first or not. If the issues go away, get a better internal wireless card. I have the Linksys WMP300N because I needed an external antenna, it works great:
