^Exactly. Weezer has always walked that fine line and that's what made them so great when they were at their best. It was tongue in cheek and they didn't take themselves too seriously while still writing some killer pop songs. Right now it doesn't work and it comes off as totally lame.

I agree about The Red Album --- in the 2nd song ("greatest man that ever lived") there's this rap rock shit at the beginning that is terrible, then this spoken word crap at the end that's even worse, but the middle contains all kind of good hooks and changes of pace.I like "Pork & Beans", the 3rd track, and I like one of the songs near the end... I think it's #7 (one of the tracks that doesn't have Rivers on vocals). I like it better than Make Believe, but so far I'm not enjoying this too much. Maybe 3 or 4 songs out of 10 will continue to get a listen from me.

See I think I feel the opposite of most of you guys on this. To me "Peace" had worse lyrics than most of the songs on this album. I had 3 major issues with Make Believe (a lot of minor issues, but these were the big ones): lyrics, repetitiveness, and production. Lyrics are still a problem, and IMO the biggest problem Rivers (ignoring the other guys for a moment here as writers) has at this point with his songwriting. However, I do actually think the lyrics here are much better than Make Believe, although there are still some cringe worthy ones. Or maybe they aren't better, but are just masked more by more interesting music around them. As for the other two concerns, I think this album addressed them. These songs are just more interesting, with more little quirks and details that have been lacking for some time. That is probably why I still find myself enjoying this album whereas the last few wore out their welcome rather quickly. The backing vocals are the best since Pinkerton; I don't care for any of the other guys as lead singers, but I yearn for the return of more 3 part harmonies like the early albums, and there are some here that aren't bad.Production is the biggest improvement. This has pretty much killed everything since Pinkerton for me. That's more of a personal issue; bad production can just destroy an album for me. Completely throwing out objective discussion, I just think most of these songs are fun and actually rock; I can turn up the volume and blast them. The drums finally have some kick to them (and I might even daresay that this is Pat's best effort outside of Pinkerton), and the bass has some power behind it. The production on Green and Make Believe, and to a slightly lesser extent Maladroit, was just such utter shit that it's unbelievable. Green and Make Believe might actually be decent albums if they weren't compressed into utter oblivion.I've always been driven into a rage and wanted to rip off the necks and shit down the throats of people who say things like "U GUYZ WOULD HATE PINKERTON AND LOVE MAKE BELIEVE IF THEY WERE RELEASED IN THE OPPOSITE ORDER". But, I actually do kind of feel in a couple spots on this album that if a song or two were 1994 demos reactions would be completely different. I'm not totally sure what I'm saying here. I guess I'm honestly a bit surprised at how much hate this album is getting; it's weird being in the other camp for once. Once I get past the opening few lines in "Troublemaker" that are terrible, I just really like that song. I think "The Greatest Man" is awesome, "Pork and Beans" has grown on me and seems permanently stuck in my head, and while I'm not sure what to make of the shitty verses of "Everybody Get Dangerous", I think the bridge and breakdown are killer. I like "Dreamin'" right down to the bizarre "running through the meadows" midsection that sounds like a weak imitation of something from a hippie era Beach Boys album. Fuck it, maybe this is just a guilty pleasure for me. "Thought I Knew" is a shitty song, but I'll be god damned if I don't enjoy listening to it every time. I think "Automatic" is fun although the tempo is too slow, and "The Angel and the One", despite being absurdly anti-climatic, is awesome.I hope that I don't change my mind later and regret having made this post, but I think it's had enough time to settle in that my opinion is pretty firm.Oh, and I'm also interested to hear the 4 deluxe tracks: http://www.amazon.com/Weezer/dp/B001A62PP6/ref=dm_ap_alb2?ie=UTF8&qid=1211695036&sr=101-3 Miss Sweeney definitely sounds odd.

I'm digging the raconteurs album more and more lately.especially the last track Carolina Drama, it just seems fucking epic although i'm sure many see it as just silly. Can't wait to see them at Bonnaroo.

^it was originally released locally with the cover you posted (the guy who did the comp. was selling them at schoolkids like 6 months ago), but when Stones Throw officially released it they changed the cover to look like the others in the series (Florida Funk, Midwest Funk, Texas Funk - which are all great)
6/3/2008 11:37:54 AM
anyone know if School Kids has the Fleet Foxes album on vinyl and how much they're charging?

Coldplay -- Viva La Vidahxxp://rs288.rapidshare.com/files/119982638/cold2008.rarone of the tracks, "life in technicolor" is poor quality. I have another link to it as well, but it's at 128, while this is at 192.If/when I find a better one, I'll up it. It should helps some of y'alls ratio's on other sites, however.

Found another Coldplay link --- Life in Technicolor is actually 5mins. this one also has Lost! & Loves in Japan acoustic versions and A Spell Rebel Yellhxxp://www.megaupload.com/?d=TEQ3HDE1 id3 tags are a little messed up, but you can put it in a playlist or whatever.

^ I don't think that Life in Technicolor is right. It sounds like The Escapist was just added to the beginning of itSomebody had found this link that's in Japanese, but it has the length of each song next to it and it's only 2.29http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-j/section-index/pid-1010989205//coldplay nerd

i really like the new coldplay
6/4/2008 11:38:59 PM
^if I absolutely hate the single is there still a chance i'll like the rest?if not then I'm not going to waste my time.
6/5/2008 12:52:23 AM
I've actually heard the new coldplay was decent but after listening to it I still don't care for them.
6/5/2008 2:49:39 AM
^^ maybe... the album isn't really like Violet Hill. It's also a new sound for them completely but yet you can still hear the Coldplay in it. I would give it a shot if I were you
6/5/2008 7:17:35 AM
^^^ if you're talking about violet hill that's the only song i'm not really into...but if you're talking about viva la vida then you might not like it.
6/5/2008 12:33:41 PM
Listened through the Coldplay album a couple times, I like it, it definately has a U2 kind of sound to it but I like the faster tempo compared to a bunch of slow, depressing songs.

That's a very informative post, but just in case ...Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue [Legacy Edition]
6/5/2008 8:33:51 PM
that's sweet-ass package design
6/5/2008 8:35:42 PM
It's a really great album, too...all three Wilson brothers were great songwriters. "Forever," for example, is a fantastic song, and the original recording doesn't have any of the cheesiness of the John Stamos version.
6/5/2008 8:45:51 PM
How are the Beach Boys so damned trendy to you hipsters? I will never understand this.
6/5/2008 9:09:25 PM
trendy?i think 40 years has outlived the term "trend"
6/5/2008 9:18:16 PM
Over-fucking-rated then. It's like a cult of you people who get all your friends together and push Pet Sounds on them like it's the holy grail of the timelessness of awesome music. Need to get over it. That album isn't even that great. I mean, it's okay...but don't go touting off and diarrheaing at the mouth when anybody outside said cult probably doesn't give a fuuuuuuck.[Edited on June 5, 2008 at 9:33 PM. Reason : k]

i tried to get into the beach boys, and i like some of their stuffbut it's just not for me... too sweet or somethingover time i've simply just gone beatles > rolling stones to rolling stones > beatles
6/5/2008 9:30:38 PM
I love Pet Sounds, Smile and some of Wild Honey. But the rest of their catalog is too cheery for everyday listening IMHO.Now Pacific Ocean Blue is great stuff. It's pop that's both fun and gritty.
