id bet the r^2 on the regression between stars and national ranking is pretty high

1) Offers matter more than stars.2) On average, higher star rated recruits perform better than lower ones (SFN did a good analysis of this a year or so ago).3) There is a great deal of variation between how highly rated recruits turn out. Basically, talent identification, a coaching staff's ability to develop talent, and the player's own dedication, work ethic, and ability to realize their potential (not to mention avoiding academic and/or disciplinary issues) makes a difference.

I know this has been said, but wasn't P.Rivers like a 2* tight end prospect? MAYBE 3*
12/5/2007 12:54:08 PM
pretty sure 2star TE prospect. either auburn or alabama wanted him bad at TE but MOC gave him his shot at QB.
12/5/2007 1:02:02 PM
Glennon was named Gatorade POY in Virginia today I believe
12/5/2007 1:09:42 PM
^^ it was auburn and the te coach that was recruiting him there was none other than NOEL MAZZONE
12/5/2007 1:17:31 PM
Noel Mazzone's famous words to Rivers when he told him he'd like to play QB in college. 'Son, with that throwing motion you'll never play a down of quarterback at the college level. Your future is at Tight End'(And obviously I've paraphrased this, but PR said it was similar)

stone was ranked #33 at his position, Jay Davis was not rated according to packpride, but statefansnation's profile had him at #23 QB and PrepStar All American[Edited on December 5, 2007 at 2:17 PM. Reason : brain fart]

^^ not 5 stars, but:davis was pretty sought after coming out of HS in florida(4*, #19 QB in his class). he was supposed to be the next great QB for us.stone (4*) was the #2 or 3 dual threat QB in the nation when he chose us. it was considered at the time to be a huge recruiting coup for us when he picked state over a bunch of elite football schools (his offer list read like a who's who of college football history).bobby washington was another 4*, he transferred though.[Edited on December 5, 2007 at 2:12 PM. pretty sure he was talking about jay davis, not aj
12/5/2007 2:12:02 PM
Jay Davis or AJ Davis?
12/5/2007 2:12:32 PM
for good QBs to become great QBs, they need a solid system.i'm am glad we have/are going to have the system that Matt Ryan experienced.
12/5/2007 2:14:07 PM
seems like stone and davis fell victim to the turnover our staff experienced, although I'm not sure either had the physical tools to be a consistent D1 QB
12/5/2007 2:18:34 PM
12/5/2007 2:25:34 PM
According to the N&O Jay Davis is now the offensive coordinator at Grambling State, although I couldn't imagine he would become the OC at Duke if Broadway was hired.
12/5/2007 3:04:10 PM
Highly touted players we've had. 1) Derek Morris (5 Star - #1 OL)2) Brandon Jeffries (Did he even enroll? 5 Star - #1 OL)3) AJ Davis ( 5 star - #1 or 2 CB.... he was good, but not this good)4) Bobby Washington (5 star - #2 RB I think... he wasn't very good)5) Marcus Stone (4-stars - #11 QB... #2 Dual threat)6) Jay Davis (4 stars - Something like #20 QB)Of course this doesn't include Brown, Baker, Willie Young, McLendon, Tramain Hall, Richard Washington, D. Pressley, Mario Williams, and all the ones that did pan out. We're going about 50/50 on highly touted players being good. When you look at our other great players (Holt, Tyler, McCargo, A. Maddox, Hoyte, Burnette, Lawson, Tulloch, Rivers, Locklear, Harris..... and a quite a few more), none of them had very many scholarship offers with maybe the exception of Tank. You're obviously going to get good players due to the law of averages, but I think for nearly all of these players (except maybe Tank and possibly Tulloch?), we were their only major conference offer.(And I will point out Chuck didn't recruit Burnette... I think he's the only one on the list)[Edited on December 5, 2007 at 3:56 PM. Reason : ]

New OL commit, offensive guard Ahmad Jaradat from London, Ontario, Canada. With him and Kuhn we now have some international flavor on the team. Ht: 6-foot-4Wt: 290 lbshttp://ncstate.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=75141I can see it now. "Hey nice block, eh. We are aboot to score." TOB must have used the RBC Center and the 2006 Stanley Cup Champion Hurricanes to lure him here. Rather than having one of the numerous O-line players that are now in the NFL call him, TOB had Rod Brind'Amour call him. Hey at must have liked our colors.

http://tinyurl.com/25r4jkArticle on Ahmad Jaradat and his commitment. Looks like he'll be a January enrollee like Maddox.Wolfpack getting international flavorJaradat, born in Kuwait and raised in Canada, will play football at N.C. StateBy Bill ColeJOURNAL REPORTERCoach Tom O’Brien’s pledge to bring to N.C. State the best football players that he can find has led to Canada and a commitment from Ahmad Jaradat, a big and promising offensive lineman.Jaradat is a 6-5, 290-pound senior at Central Catholic High School in London, Ontario. He was born in Kuwait but his family moved to Canada in the summer of 1990 when the Persian Gulf War began after Iraq invaded his country.Jaradat returned to his high school for an extra semester this year in grade 13 to improve his chances of playing U.S. major-college football. He was also considering Colorado and Connecticut, and visited N.C. State last weekend, and was offered a scholarship before returning home.“Pretty much what made this decision happen is the coaching staff and the facilities,” Jaradat said. “Athletically and academically N.C. State is outstanding. With the coaching staff that is there and the recruits that are coming in, this school is going to burst, I think.”Jaradat plans to enroll in January for the second semester and go through spring practice. He is N.C. State’s 18th commitment in O’Brien’s first full recruiting year at the school. He will be at least the second international player in the program. Markus Kuhn, a German, was a freshman defensive lineman this season.Jaradat began playing football five years ago. He played offensive tackle the first four years and played tight end this season. He played on defense also at nose tackle and end.He has 4.9-second speed over 40 yards. Jaradat said that the N.C. State coaches want to move him to center. He has limited experience at the position but is confident that he can learn it quickly and smoothly.“Playing center is fine with me,” Jaradat said. “As long as the team does well I can play whatever position they want for me. It’ll be a challenge like everything else, but with the help of the coaching staff I’ll master it sooner than later.” (outstanding attitude by that guy)Jaradat played basketball in high school for three years through the 11th grade and played rugby for four years.Jaradat is looking forward to enrolling at N.C. State and a change in the winter weather. He and his brother, Amin, were running errands yesterday with the temperature at 15 degrees.“It’s freezing,” Jaradat said. “I can’t wait to get down there in January.”

^So Maddox is still enrolling in Jan despite the knee?[Edited on December 11, 2007 at 11:23 PM. Reason : V Durrrrrrr . . . I knew that, stupid Controls fuckin with my brainz ]

Maddox is fine, he's playing in the Shrine Bowl game. It's Manning who has a messed up knee, and no I don't think he's enrolling in January.
12/11/2007 11:15:17 PM
manning kindof said there wasn't really a point to doing it since he was going to have to redshirt anyway w/ the knee.
12/11/2007 11:16:47 PM
i read an article that i cant find now that said he is defently coming january to rehab. Why would he not, we have a great medical staff that would help him rehab a lot better than some shit in laurenburg
12/12/2007 10:59:15 AM
here is the link http://www.laurinburgexchange.com/articles/2007/12/02/news/sports/sports01.txtpretty much says it will take atleast 6 months but more likely a year and will most likely redshirt 2008 unless rehab goes faster that planned. also says he will most likely rehab at state[Edited on December 12, 2007 at 11:08 AM. its interesting that Manning is graduating earlyhe's got his academics straight
12/13/2007 10:53:31 AM
oh man i cant wait to see 'nique suit up for the pack. Some considered him to be our most important recruit last year and he will definitely upgrade our linebacking corps
12/13/2007 11:03:20 AM
I thought Ellis was playing CB?
12/13/2007 11:22:16 AM
what ever happened to jay smith the 4 star WR we got last year. Did he red shirt or did he not qualify. I never saw him get any pt this season.
12/13/2007 11:26:29 AM
I thought he red-shirted. He's with the team, b/c he's on the GoPack.com roster.
12/13/2007 11:30:10 AM
^Redshirt, we are crazy deep at WR right now.
12/13/2007 11:36:19 AM
redshirted and burned up the starters in practice
12/13/2007 11:47:23 AM
he i saw him on gopack i was just checking because i have not heard a lot about him lately and he was our top recruit last year

Don't forget that Geron James has worked hard at getting back on to the team. I think he rejoins the team this Spring semester.
12/13/2007 12:08:11 PM
i think this might be our deepest talented posistion besides quarterback.
12/13/2007 12:31:30 PM
^ hahaha^^^ I think Steven Howard will get some meaningful minutes. I've seen him around campus and physically he's pretty impressive. And iirc I think he was supposed to be really fast too.
12/13/2007 1:53:43 PM
new commitmentLeRoy Burgess- JC Defensive Tackle..............6-1 295http://kansasstate.scout.com/2/712561.html
12/18/2007 2:17:34 PM
Good pickup. Isn't LeRoy one of the top JUCO D-lineman for this year's class? We definitely need to shore it up and get some quality depth after what happened last year with all the injuries on the D-line. It may have been a blessing in disguise though b/c Kuhn and Holmes got some quality minutes.[Edited on December 18, 2007 at 2:41 PM. Reason : ]
