no idea if they do, but my ring is covered forever as long as we take it in every 6 months for a "checkup"

they clean it and inspect all the prongs and such.

The diamond fell out and got chipped???

I don't feel like searching through 21 pages. What size and setting do you have? I'm looking at Tiffany style 6 prong settings for a 1ct to hopefully avoid this...

the main stone isnt a diamond, its a multicarat rhodolite. it had 3 thick prongs with diamonds that held it... prongs and the diamonds are fine, the stone slipped out somehow.

so... after scanning all 22 pages of this thread, no links really proved to be helpful to the first-time diamond buyer. Anybody know of some sites that will give us some good guidance? (as we know next to nothing about any of this!) thx!

^^ I got married on the beach at EI and my wife has been looking to break into event planning after having so much fun planning ours. We'll also be living down there starting October. I don't know what you have in mind but I can put you in touch with her and she'd probably help/plan your wedding for next to nothing just so she can build a reference base.

aea check out the last page (21) there is a lot of useful information in there...

I found the links I posted at the very bottom of the page really useful for my search b/c it went into "what matters"...

Get a really solid idea of what price you want to fit into, then get on JamesAllen.com and look at some stones to find what you have to do to get into your price point, then to get a real world size feel go to Jareds...

Cut, Clarity, Color is the order to consider... Size is the direct variable to scale the cost

Solitaire settings will run up to $1.5k for general stuff... I'm partial to the platinum 6 prong tiffany setting which goes for $540 on blue nile... so I factor that into the cost and then search for rocks from there.

General Goal is an "eye clean" stone... and a Diamond is NOT an investment in anything other than your future... You will never be able to sell it for anything remotely around what you paid for it

Last night we were chatting about her day and she was talking about how she loved using her Elmo(sp?) projector and how she liked seeing her hands on the wall (lovely hands)... People joke about how girls aren't going to carry around a 10x loupe... But the rock is going to be on the freaking wall... My clarity requirements just went up 2 grades b/c she WILL be looking at it all the time under magnification...
Doh!

Congratulations jmpack!

I said YES August 22!

It's white gold, princess cut, floating solitaire with accent diamonds. The accents go 1/2 way around the ring and underneath the floating solitaire. He did a great job on his own and I was very impressed with his choice! It's a perfect mix of what we both liked: he liked solitaires and I liked 3 stone or accents best. My ring is beautiful.

My guy has been hinting. The other day I told him that if he wasted 3k on a ring instead of a house down payment or an awesome honeymoon I'd be pissed. Diamonique all the way! I'm not ashamed to be broke.

Thinking about proposing to my SO, and she has stated several times that she doesn't an expensive ring or a diamond, but does want some kind of ring.

I think she'd like an emerald or something like that...something smallish but important to her (birthstone, irish, etc.).

But, most of the people I know got a diamond for an engagement ring...and it's kinda customary.

A) How often is a diamond engagement ring an option and people get something else instead.

B) Is this some she-trick/test, where they say they don't want something but they really do?

^it is always a test/trick

You could do a diamond center with emerald sides or vice versa for the ring if you want to include both.

Emerald is a soft stone and not suitable for daily wear. If you're worried she's tricking you or something work on your communication or talk to her mom.

It's been brought up before but left hand rings that aren't diamond usually say promise ring to a lot of people.
