I can understand not accept credit cards or checks or whatever else...but cash is legal US tender, I'm not sure how they can refuse to accept it

not to mention the fact that if you want to buy an iPhone for a SO or a family member as a gift...and then end up breaking yours and have to buy a new one. What are they going to say? Sorry you've already bought 2 iphones...try verizon's chocolate though.

so it is just a way to keep track of the number that you have purchased

just use a different credit card number if you want another one

They probably keep up with names too, and your name is on the mag stripe of the card..not sure what exactly it records or doesn't, but it is feasible to record your name too... although limiting purchases based just on a name is absurd, since common names would of course pose quite an issue

FWIW, the statement on the bills are "This note is legal tender for all debts public and private". The key word to note there is "debt" which has a very specific legal meaning. When you walk into a store to buy a product, you are not in debt to the store, they can still refuse to sell you the product. On the otherhand, if the store offers to let you have the product and puts it on your tab, then you are in debt to the store and they must accept US currency as payment for that debt. In reality, a store could insist that the only form of payment they accept is chicken feet and as long as they never allow you to put yourself in debt to them, it's perfectly legal.

thats why im guessing it is just the number

and if they ask you for other information, you can always just refuse to give it to them

http://www.treas.gov/education/faq/currency/legal-tender.shtml

via slashdot

Quote :
"The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy."

I just noticed today that if your phone is locked and you turn it on. Before you slide to unlock you can double click the home button to bring up iPod controls without ever having to 'unlock' the phone. Pretty neat. Up until then I was under the impression that the phone had to be unlocked to double tap the home button in order to bring up the ipod controls over any window. And music had to be playing in order for this to work.

If you double tap it on the unlock screen regardless of music being played...the controls will appear.

i got a really good deal on an ipod touch on eBay so i guess i'll get some taste of the iphone. i would have just bought the iphone, but i'm locked with verizon and get the best service through them so i'll stick it out with my motorola q. i changed the registry and homescreen and it looks a lot like an iphone now anyway.

i wish you could set it double-tap from locked state have have it bring up your favorite contacts instead of the ipod controls.

^that could lead to accidental calls so I think its best that they left that off. Double tap while the phone is unlocked does bring up favorites though.

Ok so Im not reading through all 22 pages to see if this has been discussed but I have a question about the plans. According to this link the minimum plan is 59.99 a month and includes

450 minutes
Unlimited data w/ email/web
Visual VM
200 SMS text messages
5000 nights/weekends minutes
Roll Over
Unlimited Mobile to Mobile

Other than the bullshit taxes and "other charges" its going to cost you 60 bucks a month right? Sounds like a good deal to me.

cool. That's not bad for how much I use a cell phone.

Another question. Can you install putty or a ssh client without having to hack it?

dude, 200 texts and unlimited data is almost enough to make me switch. i am starting to seriously consider it now, but att doesn't work in my hometown (unless it roams i think and you pay, but i don't know please shed light on this if you can) and the coverage for att seems pretty shitty according to the coverage map shown on the att website.

I've hacked about every thing electronic I've ever owned and screwed some up beyond repair so I'm not against hacking it... I just don't wanna completely destroy something I just paid $400 for

Judging from what I've read about the iPhone all I would want on it is putty or another good ssh client. I almost got a treo but compared to the treo the iPhone is a better deal.

Does anybody else get much better reception when it's plugged in? I get 1, 2 bars max, most everywhere in my apt, but when it's plugged in I always get 3-5 bars - even when I just have the USB cord dangling from the phone and not plugged in to the computer.

^^ i asked that question about 10 times throughout this thread and never have gotten a good answer, but I notice the same thing. I get one bar at max at my parents house when its not on the dock but on the dock I get almost a full signal. It doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not, just sitting on the dock seems to do the trick

Dakota

The antenna is located in the bottom segment of the phone where the USB port is located as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cord was acting as an antenna extension.

Reception is the same whether the cord is plugged in to the dock or not. I guess maybe the base is acting as an antenna, but the cord isn't, in my experience/opinion.
