Prob 3/4 of the way through Oath and Honor by Liz Cheney. Definitely recommend.

I was aware of most of the major actions detailed in the book but I didn't fully approach how much all of the stuff attempted by Trump and his sycophants was part of a cohesive plan, playbooked weeks in advance. It looked to me more like just crazies slinging bullshit everywhere, and there was certainly an element of that, but the it was definitely more coordinated and cohesive and premeditated in advance than that, too.

It also details some of the behind the scenes among the GOP members in Congress--who was actively, purposefully carrying water for Trump, who was just craven or a huge pussy (or both), etc. It explains Mitch McConnell a little better, too. McConnell appeared to me at the time to be vehemently against Trump in general, let along all of the coup attempt stuff, and yet wouldn't administer the fatal political blow when all he had to do was squeeze the trigger--and that always baffled me. According to Liz Cheney, it was basically a political calculation to have his cake and eat it too--denounce it, but not suffer the political fallout within the GOP of actually doing anything to him--because he felt like Trump was politically done and would fade away.

How in the hell someone as politically astute as McConnell could believe that, I don't know.

Gross…

"That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian. It’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor," Trump continued, referring to the highest military honor bestowed for valor in combat.

"But civilian version, it’s actually much better because everyone [who] gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they're soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets, or they’re dead," Trump concluded. “She gets it, and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal, but she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she got it for — and that’s through committees and everything else.”

^^ the impeachment hearings did a great job showing how coordinated it was and I still don’t think we know the depths esp re Stephen Milller

Interesting about McConnell though

Yeah, I mean I knew there was some level of coherence, but I didn't fully appreciate it. I also didn't watch most of the hearings. Also, this book was published well after the hearings, so some of the info has come to light since--and more may come out from Jack Smith's investigation.

Enjoyed the well-reasoned off-the-cuff comments of a clearly very stable genius.

By the way, Jon Voight is also better than any of those sucker Congressional Medal of Honor winners!

That's crazy that he would think that. All you had to do is go back to the Tea Party to see that this wasn't going to "just go away."

Course he's old af too and was freezing up at the mic, so his brain is probably toast like the rest.

I mean here he is, still towing the line as a Trump endorser as of two days ago.

I really don't understand that about some politicians.

That guy is literally going to die any day now. Why won't he retire and step-away from politics and try to enjoy his last remaining days?

I mean, he didn't snuff him out when he had the chance, so now he has to abide him.

I don't know, but I don't attribute it to senility or whatever. McConnell was pretty sharp at that time (he may still be, I don't know, other than those petit mal seizures or whatever has been going on with him)...

but my guess is that someone who has been at the level he has been, for as long as he's been, is a little bit like my dad--out of touch with what now comprises the bulk of the GOP. My dad grew up very, very blue collar, but ended up transitioning to a white collar career and making relatively substantial money. He's lived in a nice country club for decades now. He realizes that knuckle-dragging, profoundly stupid and ignorant MAGAs exist, but I can't get it through his head that they represent what the GOP is now--that he and his Republican friends and peers really have little in common with the GOP mainstream now. Country-club, chamber of commerce, national security, limited government, business-oriented Reaganite Republicans are a tiny sliver now among the rank and file.

I expect that it may be a little the same for an 80-something man at the pinnacle of the legislative branch of the US government, who has operated among a group heavily represented by Republicans broadly similar to him. Maybe he can see the poll #s and realizes Trump is popular among Republicans, but maybe he was blind to how deeply ingrained he his across the rank and file of the party now; that neither Trump nor Trumpism is a fad that will simply go away by him losing an election.

Wow

https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/29/politics/us-army-rebukes-trump-campaign-arlington-incident/index.html
Participants in the August 26th ceremony and the subsequent Section 60 visit were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds. An ANC employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside,” the Army spokesperson said in the statement on Thursday. Section 60 is an area in the cemetery largely reserved for the graves of those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“This incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked. ANC is a national shrine to the honored dead of the Armed Forces, and its dedicated staff will continue to ensure public ceremonies are conducted with the dignity and respect the nation’s fallen deserve,” the statement said.

The Army spokesperson said while the incident was reported to the police department at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, the employee in question “decided not to press charges” so the Army “considers this matter closed.”[/quote]

It's OK, though, because a couple of the families of dead soldiers gave Trump permission to break federal laws. Because that's how it works.

The whole episode is just a bad look for the entire campaign. No one on Team Fascist had looked good throughout this. Even the PR guy is digging holes for them over a physical assault of a federal employee. The poor victim here is afraid to press charged because she knows Cheeto's sycophants will harass her until she dies. And we can't prosecute them without feeding into his bullshit victim narrative of "woe is me, why do i keep getting indicted for all the crimes i keep blatantly committing", so physical assaults are now apparently fair game. We are rapidly approaching brownshirts territory at this point.

I've never seen a clearer picture of an organized criminal empire than this. I'm hoping the people in the margins (not sure how the fuck you can be in the margins about fascism, but ok) see this and react in horror, but I've just got no faith left in Americans at this point.
