Many of the manufacturing facilities are in rural areas of now declining population. While that used to be somewhat protective in that the presence of a stable manufacturing location was coupled with a stable workforce, as population declined and everyone was encouraged to go to go away to college whether they were good candidates or not, the historical workforce reached retirement age with nothing good to backfill.

In other areas, there is greater competition for lower-skilled or less physical jobs with higher wages, and my company is behind. When people can make $2 or $3 per hour more somewhere else, you certainly can't fault them for leaving if that's best for them and their family. Then we eventually try to play catch-up, but even if we pull close to even, that's not enough to lure back the best quality people who previously departed.

What we are left with is a workforce with some very good experienced people who are too late in their careers or too geographically tied to want to move, but are increasingly frustrated with both new workers / trainees and management decisions and priorities, and then otherwise the bottom of the barrel of the work pool. The flakiest of the flakey. The wannabe on disability crowd. The drug addled. The functionally illiterate. They have tried many incentive programs, but right now not much is working.

This isn't limited to our company, our industry, or our specific region. So, a pool of motivated workers fleeing much worse circumstances seems like a great solution. At minimum come up with an effective guest worker program, or an eventual citizenship through gainful employment and contributing member of society program.

Regardless of what the tech bros might think, these are not jobs which can be easily completed by AI or robotic automation. The manual dexterity and force modulation requirements are very high, and every machine stop has critical differences which must be analyzed.

Then there's the demographic collapse that would already be occurring in this country if not for immigration. The birth rate among native-born citizens is below replacement. There won't be enough healthcare workers to support the needs of the aged. But sure, let's intern and then deport them at great cost and dubious humanity instead of working toward a common sense policy.

To be clear, I'm not in favor of illegal immigration, but I really can't fault fellow human beings for trying to better their circumstances. If we didn't have such broken policy, one would assume illegal immigration pressure would be greatly reduced.

The solution to illegal immigration is to stabilize our neighboring countries where the immigrants are coming from. Most people don’t WANT to have to leave their home, they feel forced to in most cases

And the 2nd thing is making it easier for immigrants who come here to get jobs and drivers license, keeping them poor and without transportation is what causes the problems people have with immigrants.

What are your plans to stabilize Mexico? And not just Mexico, but many of the other southern N. American countries and northern S. American countries? It’s not like money is going to fix the corruption in the Mexican government. It would take an invasion force to root out the cartels and clean up Mexico.

But didn’t Guatemala or somewhere just recently eliminate their gang violence problem… it’s doable. For Venezuela they’re having major economic issues, we don’t like their communism and their closeness with China, but maybe ease up on sanctions. Mexicans aren’t really the major cause of the spike in refugees so not really worried about Mexico.

Regardless, painting immigrants as rapists and criminals and vermin and rounding them up into camps is the exact wrong policy, giving dreamers a pathway to citizenship is a no brainer, rhetoric about ending birthright citizenship is wrong, pretending immigrants are voting is also wrong and dangerous. The vast majority of Americans have ancestors that were immigrants so I don’t see why democrats are so mealy mouthed on pushing back on the gop hate here, and reframe the increase in asylum seekers as an opportunity to help boost the stability of our own hemisphere.

We don’t only have to send money to other countries for bombs.
