Why have a vasectomy? Have your wife get an IUD. It's just as effective, it's easy, it starts working right away (unlike the snip), it's reversible and renewable at the end of the life of the IUD, it's not surgery, and has the bonus of reducing or eliminating her periods. And heaven forbid, but something could happen to your wife and/or children and you'd wish that you hadn't opted for surgical sterilization. I put that forth because I can think of two different people that I know who ended up wanting more children down the road because of changes in circumstance (one being the very tragic death of a child).
8/19/2011 5:37:15 PM
I wish more people would embrace IUDs. They're fucking awesome.
8/19/2011 5:41:11 PM
i don't trust my wife's IUD. i don't see how you can claim it's more effective than a vasectomy.
8/19/2011 5:48:52 PM
I'm getting my second IUD a week from Monday. I'm 29 with two kids and I definitely do not want to get pregnant again. Even so, the IUD won out over surgical sterilization for either of us. I even talked to my doctor extensively about having my tubes tied or the Essure procedure and the IUD trumped them both.^You do realize that a vasectomy isn't immediately effective and there is a failure rate, right? The failure rate for a vasectomy is nearly 1 percent and it's .2 percent for the hormonal IUD.[Edited on August 19, 2011 at 5:56 PM. 8/19/2011 5:52:30 PM
^Why is that? Just what you said above? Or...? I just always thought tube tying was the way to go?[Edited on August 19, 2011 at 5:54 PM. Reason : ]

I've had my IUD 5 years, and I'd be getting another but I've found studies that say there are some negative effects in women who have what I have, and I've been experiencing those effects. Didn't know it was from the IUD though, and that makes me a sad panda.
8/19/2011 5:55:23 PM
She didn't say it was more effective. She said AS effective, which (depending where you get your numbers) it is, or within a very close margin.

Tubal ligation actually has a higher failure rate than the hormonal IUD. (I know someone who got pregnant after having her tubes tied.) It can also put you at risk for etopic pregnancy. AND it doesn't stop your period. The failure rate is not 0. In the long term, you can have recanalization where basically the things they snipped grow back. The recanalization rate is .4 percent.[Edited on August 19, 2011 at 6:02 PM. Reason : .]

don't get me wrong, the IUD is great. i love that she's never on the rag anymore. only bad thing i have to say about it is that it can cause some discomfort during sex if i bottom out in her.
8/19/2011 6:09:36 PM
Just from the strings? You must have the most sensitive dick ever.
8/19/2011 6:12:01 PM
I got a vasectomy a little over a year ago when I was 27. I'm married with three kids and neither of us wants any more. I was happy to stop after the first, but the wife wanted more.As long as you go back and make sure you're shooting blanks after the proper amount of time and don't just assume you are, it works great.
8/19/2011 6:12:14 PM
^^what she said.or her IUD is about to fall out.
8/19/2011 6:14:51 PM
yeah, i guess it's the string. only really bothers me when it hits the end of my urethra. feels like a piece of heavy mono fishing line.
8/19/2011 6:44:19 PM
Her doctor can fix that for you by cutting the strings shorter or tucking them out of the way.

While they are all debating birth control SEND ME A CONFESSION...
8/19/2011 6:49:36 PM
If I were to ever get a vasectomy, I would bank some of my "boys" for safe keeping, in case I ever changed my mind.
8/19/2011 7:43:33 PM
Can you freeze them for a rainy day?
8/19/2011 7:44:28 PM
there are private banks out there, but they are $$(pun intended)
8/19/2011 7:49:33 PM
Yes, you can freeze theme for a rainy day for relatively little. We had a friend with testicular cancer who froze his boys in case the treatment left him sterile. It's the IVF that's expensive -- even if you're using your own banked sperm & eggs.
