We really don't need a separate thread for every piece of news about the program -- especially since both were already posted in this thread and it was already devolving in to a flame the low post count.

Re: Leslie -- CJ had committed that very second, which was by far the biggest State related news of the off-season and IMO it was bigger than recruiting thread itself given who we were going up against and the fact that you almost never see a re-commitment.

** Also, great fucking news about 'Zo. I thought it was a given, but after last year I couldn't help but remain guarded about him.

^Agreesome. My head said Brown was a lock to get in; my heart said don’t assume anything about NC State.

BUT now that Brown is officially in, let’s play the “who do they remind you of” game. I’m being pretty generous to our guys … but … whatever:

Brown = Brandon Roy. Roy has a height advantage, but from what I’ve seen of Brown, they’re pretty similar. Both seem to have the whole package offensively and just seem to have a great feel for the game.

Leslie = Josh Smith. This one was the most obvious, although I’m hoping CJ’s outside shot is a little better. Again, Smith has an inch or two on CJ, but both are long, freakish athletes that block just about everything.

Harrow = Aaron Brooks. This was a tough one, because I’ve never really seen anything like Harrow since I’ve been watching basketball. But both he and Brooks are quick as hell, can shoot from deep, and have great athletic ability. Also, both are tiny. Brooks was listed as 6’0 160 in the draft.

ESPN makes $$ by putting the largest viewership names in highest exposure places. They are in no rush to include us in anything. Also notice they haven't even updated their recruiting rankings yet to represent CJL commitment -which changes the preseason rankings as well.

And, as per usual, they have to completely over rate UNC, so that everyone can laugh about their disappointment later on when they are confused about not being as good as everyone thinks they will

by ranking unc high, their season will be a story either way. So now when they suck and espn still puts unc games on primetime its not just "another shitty team" its "can unc turn their season around and live up to expectations" and then they can hold entire segments of sportscenter called "whats wrong with unc" and then cities like Birmingham can get new facilities and global exposure by having the honor to host unc in an nit game.

I agree, let our team do the talking on the court and let everybody else talk shit about us. If we're good we'll win games. Besides I think we were ranked 24th(?) in the preseason polls the JJ hickson year.

UNC hasn't done anything to earn that ranking. I don't care what they did two years ago when every one currently on their team was seeing little to no minutes or still in HS. It doesn't mean that the current group of athletes on roster is worth anything given the results of last season, when most of those clowns (all but the incoming freshmen of course) were on roster and seeing time.

I kind-of like being under the radar. But it is annoying always seeing UNC in the headlines, even when they're terrible and spinning a story like "What can UNC do to get on the right track?" When it should read, "UNC's stinks!"

yeah UNC's 11th rank is a lot more bullshit than our non-rank

objectively, neither team should even be getting votes for the top-25

I think we'll finish the season top 25. I couldn't care less where they think we start the season. I don't expect to be ranked because while we have the potential to be great, and I think we'll at least be very good, we haven't been much better than well... very average. Very average teams don't get top 25 rankings, and until we prove on the court that we're something besides very average, the media and outsiders will continue to view us in that same very average way.

and the good thing about college bball compared to say college football, is preseason rankings dont completely dictate what 12-15 teams will have a shot at playing for the title

you guys are just going to have to get over this UNC thing. maybe if they string together a few bad seasons that won't happen, but when roy williams' record there goes 2nd round, champs, 2nd round, elite 8, final four, champs before his first bad season in his career as a coach, in which they finished strong and bring in a great class, they are going to be ranked preseason. don't worry about it.

and when sidney lowe's record here goes nothing, nothing, nothing and nothing, we don't deserved to be ranked preseason. don't worry about that either.

Beerznbikes commented on that post about Katz' preseason top 25 and said it was unfair...BigEgo was the only one to "strongly" agree, but even then only once...and even then he is just being objective based on UNC's performance last year

Both of them quickly admitted that they didn't care about rankings and that we would handle biz on the court

Mind you, they did this before simonn called people out

Look what I'm saying is all of us motherfuckers are voices of reason

going off last year's finishes only, unc being 11 (after finishing 67) and us being not ranked (after finishing what, i dunno, 70 something 80 something?) seems like neither should be ranked

i'm just pointing out that we all seem to be kinda realistic, at least here on page 212

and we can point out that its bullshit unc is #11 according to katz...while still being realistic and saying we'll prove our own worth on the hardwood

when i said this

Quote :
"yeah UNC's 11th rank is a lot more bullshit than our non-rank"

i meant, UNC being ranked 11 is more unreasonable than State not being ranked...ie, State not being ranked is expected, realistic, etc...its not unreasonable...on the other hand, UNC being ranked 11, after having a terrible year last year, is an unreasonable rank...you'd think Katz would've learned that when UNC was preseason top-5 last year and they didn't even go dancing

I mean if you ranked UNC as preseason #20 I wouldn't even have a problem with that...but 11?

NC State picks up second 2010 commit

Ryan Harrow had only one goal in mind when he went to visit North Carolina State today.

The rising junior point guard committed to NC State on Monday, a day later than planned, joining forward C.J. Leslie as Class of 2010 commitments for the Wolfpack.

Harrow met with NC State coach Sidney Lowe this morning, and was joined by his mother, Fern Harrow, and his brother-in-law Erasto Hatchett, who is the assistant coach at the Concord (N.C.) Cannon School, where Harrow attended for three years before transferring to Marietta (Ga.) Walton High last January.

Once Harrow got the go-ahead from Coach Lowe and his mother to commit, the decision was easy.

"The big thing I like is Coach Lowe," Harrow said. "He's played in the NBA and coached in the NBA, and now he's coaching in college. He can make me an NBA point guard if I get that far."

Harrow admittedly has wanted to commit to NC State ever since attending the elite camp June 11-12. He also previously attended a UNC at NC State home game, and has been on the Wolfpack radar over the last year. The recruitment started to heat up after he impressed the NCSU coaches at the elite camp, getting the attention of Lowe in particular.

"I just like the school and I like Coach Lowe," Harrow said. "When I went there for the elite camp, I liked the team. They were cool, The assistant coaches, campus and facilities were nice. I like that I can go to the practice facility and work on my game at any time." (Lee Fowler just creamed his pants over hearing a recruit mention our facilities as one of the reasons why he came here)

The 6-foot, 150-pound Harrow is currently unranked by Rivals.com, but is coming off a solid showing at the GBOA South tournament in Norcross, Ga. He also played well in the Kingswood Classic in April and the Wallace Prather Memorial in May. He'll be playing this summer with Louis Williams Elite, playing some with the 16s and 17s.

Harrow received his first offer from UT-Chattanooga, and Auburn also offered. He received interest from Clemson, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Florida, Texas, Marquette, Cincinnati, Davidson, St. John's and Tennessee. (those are some good bball schools)

Harrow attended the Clemson elite camp the weekend of June 20-21, but even though he scored 50 points in a game, he didn't get the same feeling from the Tigers' coaches.

"NC State was the biggest school on me and they were coming at me the hardest," Harrow said. "They were talking to me and calling me, and I called them. My dream since I was little was to play in the ACC. The best conference to play in is the ACC." (I think he'll understand the importance of the Tobacco Road rivalries and what they mean to the fanbase since he lived in NC for so long)

Harrow will officially sign with NC State during the 2009 November signing period.

WELCOME TO THE PACK RYAN!!!"

I understand why people are hesitant to anoint Ryan as the starter. I mean you don't want to put too much pressure on the kid to come in and be our savior. Also Javi will have so much more experience than him, and that will be especially important come ACC time. Javi has logged a ton of minutes for us and will end his career with one of the highest assist totals in school history (obviously nowhere near Corchianni, but still probably in or close to the Top 10).

Javi has completely underperformed in his 3 years here if he doesn't have close to 1000 assists considering the fact that Javi had D-HORN to throw the ball to for 3 years.

He's sitting at 266 right now. He has to get to 356 to tie Grundy. Say we play 35 games in the entire season, then he'd only need to average ~2.6 assists per game. I don't think it'd be impossible for him to get 90 assists in a season, especially since we have more offensive weapons now.

He could easily be top 10 if:

1) They start counting put-backs as assists

and

2) Someone was there to rebound his 1-man fast break 3-point attempts

I just assumed that Javi wouldn't reach that 90 assist threshold because he would not see the 26 minutes per game he played this year. If he had the 130 or so assists he had this year, he would be 8th on the list. I'd love to see him do that, I just don't think it's reasonable even with more offensive weapons.

Javi is going to be getting a lot of assists next year by throwing alley oops to Vandenberg and Deshawn and occasionally CJL. He could easily crack the top 5 next year.
