What I would recommend is dl'ing the file from that like I provided (last page). Any iPhone IPSW file is stored locally on your machine. You can access these directly at the following locations:Mac OS X: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software UpdatesWindows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software UpdatesWindows Vista & Windows 7: \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software UpdatesSo...once DL'd, place the file in the specific folder, then open iTunes again.
10/12/2011 1:45:18 PM
took me 9 minutes to download from the direct link
10/12/2011 1:46:47 PM
27 minutes left on my iPad.
10/12/2011 1:47:17 PM
yeah...my iTunes DL was "12 minutes remaining" the entire 7 mins it took to DL the file
10/12/2011 1:47:23 PM
itunes isn't open. i'm trying to update itunes itself. it's downloading via firefox. it wouldn't cancel either. i closed it out & started the download again. fingers crossed it doesn't get hung up...
10/12/2011 1:47:32 PM
I tried that link and it was a fast download until it got to the point where iTunes is downloading.
10/12/2011 1:50:27 PM
update finished..Its.... So.... Pretty.... only took 45-50mins
10/12/2011 1:51:17 PM
so, if i normally update/sync on my poly-macbook, but i have my macbook air with me at the moment, and i synced this AM, i should be ok to still do the update on the mackbook air and ill be ok as far as "losing" pictures/etc and just resyncing with the poly-macbook tongiht when i get home?obvi i could just wait until tonight when i get home to do it all, but that's no fun is it?
10/12/2011 1:51:39 PM
Dang...I've got to take my kids to the dentist and it's not finished...HURRY UP!!!
10/12/2011 1:54:20 PM

10/12/2011 1:57:07 PM

So I keep clicking update and iTunes is telling me I have the most current version of iOS (4.2)wtf?nvm i figured it out. I have the 3g, not the 3gs like I thought. No update for that model. [Edited on October 12, 2011 at 2:31 PM. Reason : goddamnitsomuch]

Staggered roll-out? Or maybe they're shutting off new downloads until their servers cool down a bit.[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 2:27 PM. Reason : .]
10/12/2011 2:27:04 PM
Oh good, my phone quit working.
10/12/2011 3:08:25 PM
i've only updated my Macbook Pro to work with iCloud...pretty cool so far. you get 4 or so @me.com aliases when you turn it on.but the most exciting thing i learned indirectly was that you can setup push gmail now.....sad that i just figured this out, i know
10/12/2011 3:11:15 PM
aaaaannnnnnnnnnd the ipad update failed. It's having trouble restoring from backup. Seems to happen every time I try to update an ios device.
10/12/2011 3:11:55 PM
5 minutes left....
10/12/2011 3:14:13 PM
10/12/2011 3:28:45 PM
^^thats what mine did the first time... trying again
10/12/2011 3:29:37 PM
error 3200 is the apple servers failing.the updater needs to talk to the server right before it does the actual install for who knows why and that part fails cause their servers are hosed.god itunes is such a piece of shit. i'll be happy to uninstall it forever after this (if it ever works)
10/12/2011 3:30:56 PM
idk about iOS5, but you've been able to get gmail push for quite sometime, just by setting your gmail account up as a microsoft exchange account.http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+setup+gmail+push+for+iphonefirst returned link. but here's the direct link, and sorry for being a smart ass, esp since i think the question was asked in jest:http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 3:34 PM. Went to the Apple Store, guy said a lot of their phones were temporarily bricked as well and to try back in a few hours.
10/12/2011 4:11:29 PM
^^no, i didn't google it. i was waiting for catalyst to tell me, since that was who i was talking to. and no i wasn't asking in jest... wtf
10/12/2011 4:19:37 PM
using the location based reminders keeps the GPS running and kills the battery pretty quick fyi
10/12/2011 6:04:21 PM
Oh, my bad. I was trying to be helpful but mid-post I thought i recognized your name as one of the iPhone gurus around here, so I thought i might be setting myself up, hence the touch of sarcasm.
10/12/2011 6:14:20 PM
^^Wow I just noticed that. That's an absolute deal breaker for location based reminders. If you have any sort of location based reminder set up your battery is going to be gone in a matter of hours.
10/12/2011 6:22:05 PM
i bought an FM transmitter that charges simultaneously. Thats how im going to do all the location based stuff and turn it off when Im not in the truck
10/12/2011 6:27:39 PM
If I have to remember to turn location based reminders on and off every time I unplug my phone then it's not doing me a lot of good, it's just trading one thing I have to remember for another
10/12/2011 6:31:34 PM
I still haven't had time to get it yet. What is it like?
10/12/2011 6:36:48 PM
ehh...touche.
10/12/2011 6:37:40 PM
fyi-

Finally got iOS5 loaded on the iPad. Getting everything set back up has been a mild pain in the butt and I've already gotten a telling off from Apple because the backup hit up on the free 5gig limit with iCloud.Turns out Bookman and GoodReader had already started trying to back up everything to the iCloud and that took up way too much space too quickly. Easy fix though, so that's nice.I like the rounded sliders.
10/12/2011 7:46:06 PM
Anyone figured out how to get it to consolidate iMessages and text messages from the same person into one convo? My girlfriend's phone does it but mine doesn't.I currently have duplicate conversations for everyone that has iMessage, one convo for iMessage and one for texts, whereas hers just has them all in the same convo but blue if they're an iMessage and green if they're a text message.
10/12/2011 8:48:06 PM
apple's servers are getting a workout tonight
10/12/2011 8:51:54 PM
how long does the update take?
10/12/2011 9:01:12 PM
Still not sure I want to bother putting this on my 3gs or not. I'm torn between unlocking it & updating it before it goes up on craigslist tomorrow.
10/12/2011 9:07:23 PM
10/12/2011 9:38:25 PM
no, most likely i'm not i started it 20 minutes ago and it's on "restoring iphone apps"and we're done ]
10/12/2011 9:47:52 PM
finally done updating, but I lost all my apps... help!Ok, I can add them back one by one using iCloud, but it will take forever and I lost all my data.I havent updated my iPad yet and I really dont want to lose data on there, what can I do? I do not sync up my iPad with itunes on my PC so I can just copy it all there because when I select "Sync Apps" it says this will delete all apps and data on the iPad. Any help??[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 11:14 PM. Reason : d]
10/12/2011 11:03:38 PM
why is this shit saying it needs 9 hours to download
10/12/2011 11:25:38 PM
This thing is killing me!!!!!!!!!!! I can't get it to work and it keeps trying to get me to do 4.321 but i want 5! wtf
10/12/2011 11:27:06 PM
ok now it's just 5 hours.. to download
10/12/2011 11:35:12 PM
^^^ I had to wrangle with the restorer a bit on iTunes before the iPad was finished updating. It undid my folders but all the apps seemed to be safe.It might have helped that I did a full up-to-date backup before starting, but I don't really know if that matters. And forget the cloud for your iPad unless you're paying for the extra storage.
10/12/2011 11:42:05 PM
is lion the only osx with cloud?i know i can back it up on my iphone, but how can i sync to my laptop and see it? or is it all virtual?the notification center is a neat idea, but pointless. you swipe down and it can show you all of these notifcations. i dont know about you, but i read my texts and emails as they come in. not sure what else to use it for.and iMessage is neat. but you need to make sure the other party has ios5 as well. or else you'll be wondering what the point of imessage was. hehe[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 11:49 PM. 10/13/2011 12:00:41 AM
anyone?? is there no way to sync apps and have the itunes be overwritten by the iPad instead of the other way around?
10/13/2011 12:17:26 AM
Right click on your iPad in iTunes and click transfer apps. Then run a backup. It's really not rocket surgery.
