Awesome, the view from my window at work is going to turn into a view of people's apartments. At least someone will now find a use for that telescope.

They also announced today that they are building what appears to be the exact same building in Charlotte. They've already built it in Atlanta and Orlando and are working on Austin.[Edited on January 9, 2013 at 6:23 PM. Reason : .]

1/9/2013 10:17:18 PM
Has that always been a false facade building? Whoa.
1/9/2013 11:38:28 PM
I don't think I knew that was a false front. I hope they start the skyhouse project by the end of 2013!
1/13/2013 7:53:42 AM
I'm pretty sure someone said that was just a facade with no building a page or two back.
1/13/2013 11:53:48 AM
That would be me. What I'm not certain about is how it got that way. It was a real building for much of its life, but I want to say sometime in the 90's or the 00's the building itself was taken down. I'm assuming they kept the facade intact to preserve the continuity of the block, imagining that it would be rehabilitated at some point. Sadly, not the case--though I admit I'm kind of impressed that tearing down the sweepstakes building didn't knock that one down too. Guess it's braced pretty well.So far I have been unsuccessful in finding out when or why that building was demolished. My guess would be either fire or structural issues.
1/13/2013 1:12:05 PM
the floor above it was crumbling when you walk by it
1/13/2013 1:50:39 PM
We should build a regional maglev train network connecting the triangle, other I-40 cities, and Charlotte

Drove by Trophy Brewing today and they appear to be doing some work on a potential "porch" on the side, and the inside appears to be 95% complete. Looking forward to having a beer up there soon, and eventually some food.

I thought that Citrix building above was being completely gutted and torn down from the looks of it from the Morgan St side.
1/16/2013 3:42:58 PM
^^ baaaaadaaaaaaaassssss
1/16/2013 3:49:32 PM
^^Nah, just an extensive retro-fitThe northern part of the site (which I think is just the part with that little garage) is being torn down to build a parking deck. Also, boooo skybridges.
1/16/2013 4:03:08 PM
They took down the two northernmost buildings on the block for the deck. One was Men At Work car detailing and the other was a nondescript brick warehouse that had some structural issues.
1/16/2013 4:05:38 PM
Aren't they even leaving the gantry crane or some other equipment inside to keep the industrial feel? I can't remember from the opening event.
1/16/2013 4:24:15 PM
^that would be cool^^^if it looks anything like that sketch it will be a great addition to the warehouse district!!

1/17/2013 9:43:42 AM
How so? I don't have a huge issue with it in this case because I get that they want to connect the parking deck directly to the office, but skyways (outside of places where it gets ridiculous cold in the winter) are a remnant of an era in which planners were trying to suburbanize downtowns. They damage the pedestrian environment and are counter to efforts to make street life more vibrant. They are even shown to hurt pedestrian safety. Basically, skyways (not this particular one; I'm digressing for sure here) are not intended to make things more convenient for pedestrians; they are designed to get pedestrians away from the street so that cars can go faster. It's this bizarre kind of Corbusier-like mentality that all users should be separate, with people having their place and cars having their place; that the streets should be high speed highways, even in the middle of a downtown.[Edited on January 17, 2013 at 10:18 AM. ^^^^ I heard something about shipping containers suspended from gantry cranes as conference rooms.
1/17/2013 10:09:06 AM
they look cool. they make accessing adjacent buildings easier. there are no negatives.didn't think about it like that, but i would assume it would take more than a few peppered around downtown for it to be a problem. [Edited on January 17, 2013 at 10:21 AM. Reason : ]
1/17/2013 10:18:59 AM
That's true, but you have to start somewhere, and this will be the third one to go up recently with the two that were built as part of the Green Square project. When I worked in Newark, NJ it drove me nuts because when we went to lunch everyone would always want to walk across town using these skyways that connected the buildings instead of the street, and sure enough, that's what most people did, so when I did walk on the street there weren't too many others around.
1/17/2013 10:35:46 AM
I think the Citrix building will be a great adaptive reuse project and will really add some daytime activity to that section of downtown. Generally I hate private, stand alone parking decks because they're a hugely inefficient use of land, but in this case it's really the only choice. I'll be curious to see what NCDOT will require in terms of transportation improvements, if any...

All of Vulcan91's comments about skyways are valid.BUT THEY'RE FUN!

Stumbled upon this last night: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1274503628/crank-arm-brewing-companyIt combines two of my favorite things so I really hope they can get it done.
1/23/2013 10:12:58 AM
^cool, I hope they get some much needed funding. Adam is a cool dude, and I know he has had some legal hurdles with the Raleigh Rickshaw people in the last 18 months. Looks like the warehouse district/boylan heights may one day be the brewery/beer district. (County trophy on the edge of boylan heights.
1/23/2013 10:37:23 AM
Crank arm is going in the old White Collar crime building? Nice. Does anyone know if those guys purchased the building or rent the space? Seems they have done a lot with personal money?
1/23/2013 1:24:23 PM
I wonder how much they are counting on the Kickstarter, because it seems like a stretch to think that they will reach the $35,000.
1/23/2013 1:29:02 PM
^I agree. Fiction Kitchen went for a similar amount. They appeared to be short and then a bunch of donations rushed in at the end. I often wonder how these things work. None of the pledges count unless you get to the goal right? What if the person making the offer just finishes out whatever they don't get. If they get to 30k, to make sure they don't lose the whole bundle, they should have a friend or family member make a 5k donation before the deadline type of thing.
1/23/2013 1:45:22 PM
Yeah, if the pledge isn't met everyone gets their money back. I have no idea what options there are beyond that, though. It seems like the site should (and maybe it does) give some sort of further options for people to voluntarily keep their pledge.
