he wouldn't be cut in baseball. he's got a lot of promise, though his BA has not been great. his hitting coaches all attribute that to the fact that he has not played baseball full time. now that he can focus on one sport, he's been able to focus on the finer points of hitting and adjusting to the pitching found at the Single A level. it may take a while for him to get his bearings, but if i had to pick a pro sport in which he would be cut, the NFL would be first.

NFL careers on average are much shorter than baseball careers, even if Russell never gets the callup to the bigsThe NFL draft is 7 rounds, the MLB draft is like 50plus there are multiple levels of minor league playI dunno if he'll ever be a great hitter though, I've heard he might be a pitcher but I'm not sure if he wants to pitchhe does have a fastball in the 90s though]
5/24/2011 9:15:11 PM
the rockies would probably like for him to go play, get whatever money back from him, and keep him as a baseball prospect for a lot cheaper, since it seems like he's not doing so great anyways.

Thanks for the info.

if he was really set on football he should have taken the appropriate steps to ensure a place to play. for now though, he should take the money he's being paid and play out his contract. if it doesn't work out, he could always Chris Weinke it after a few years and use his last year of eligibility, and create a situation where he could be on campus for spring practice and really have the time to work well with a team. i feel that if he does it this fall, he's just throwing his last year away.

No he doesn't. you have 5 to play 4. He is done if he doesn't play this year. That article today saying he could play as early as June also says he has no timeline to make the decision and he doesn't have much time off next month....meaning the Rockies expect his ass on the diamond.[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 9:28 PM. ^how did Weinke pull his off? or did he just go straight to MLB draft after HS and then after it didn't work out he went to play college QB?
5/24/2011 9:32:04 PM
yesdrafted out of HS for baseball, played 6 years, went to FSU at 26[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 9:36 PM. Reason : ~]
5/24/2011 9:36:16 PM
Yes. He played baseball before going to college.
5/24/2011 9:36:24 PM
well fuck me thenjust seems like too risky a move to make for RW. the Rockies would certainly not like it, and suppose they parted ways, then in the future if he wanted to go back to baseball, teams might not even give him the time of day.
5/24/2011 9:41:15 PM
yeah Weinke was old as shit (relatively speaking) as a freshman
5/24/2011 9:44:42 PM
What do these 3 players have in common?Adam DunnKelly ShoppachRussell Wilson[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 9:50 PM. Reason : n]
5/24/2011 9:49:33 PM
I know Adam Dunn played football for Texas so I'm assuming Shoppach and Harris also played college football[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 9:51 PM. Reason : Dunn was a big ass quarterback]
5/24/2011 9:50:41 PM
further research shows me that Willie Harris does not, indeed, have twice as many strikeouts than hits this season
5/24/2011 9:51:55 PM
Todd Helton too i believe

he looks like a severely immobile QB
5/24/2011 10:11:09 PM
he also looks like he could easily shed a cornerback blitz
5/24/2011 10:43:06 PM
he also looks like a young Bill Brasky
5/24/2011 11:15:10 PM
College Football Live had a story on RW being at Auburn. So who is right?
5/24/2011 11:17:28 PM
BILL BRASKY

Of course they'd be disappointed. Any employer wouldn't want one of their assets engaging in high risk off the field behavior. Point is, this is Russell's last chance to play football at a high level, probably ever. He can play baseball until he's 40. 250K is a lot when you're 22, but not worth giving up a chance that you may regret for the rest of your life.
5/25/2011 10:41:19 AM
From the link in the tweet, looks like he did go and Auburn is playing dumb.[SEC fan]Maybe Auburn can compensate Wilson having to return a significant portion of his signing bonus[/SEC fan]
5/25/2011 10:48:25 AM
i guess what I don't understand is how he thought this was all going to play out? Did he plan all along that he was going to give back the signing bonus? If football is so important to him, then why not just play one more year? He obviously has the goods he could have went to any minor league spring workout and tried out like a lot of guys do every year after not getting drafted and/or cut from a summer free-agent try out (maybe he would make a pro team). I'd rather have him than TJ Yates and a bunch of other numbskull NFL QB's
5/25/2011 10:50:00 AM
love russell wilson.all time great QB at ncstate.will be missed by everyone...but what is transpiring with his wavering and waffling is further validation to me that TOB did the right thing. the boys know who the QB is, and have so much time to adjust and work on chemistry. such a huge benefit for relatively young team with a new WR corp.

The dumbest thing Wilson did was sign that baseball contract. The second dumbest thing he did was enter the draft in the first place. If he had any sense at all he would have played out his collegiate eligibility in both sports then entered both drafts and made his choice then.
5/25/2011 9:09:27 PM
5/25/2011 9:26:51 PM
Yeah, you don't enter the MLB draft. He was drafted out of high school, too, he just didn't sign.]
5/25/2011 9:30:02 PM
eh, let's just say he has not handled his dual sport responsibilities wellhe's a great QB, but if he wanted to be an NC State QB, he did not meet the expectations of a full time QB in TOB's system. period.]

^5, thanks justin, i didn't realize that was so difficult to put together
5/26/2011 9:30:59 AM
I'd rather have Wilson in a two-step drop shotgun run around crazy-ass cowboy hail mary fling it up offense.Don't run many of those in the NFL, so I'll take TJ Yates as my (scout team) QB.
5/26/2011 10:26:05 AM
right. i know everyone has to hate yates, but the dude is listed at 6'4" and can throw the deep ball, so he has a decent bit more nfl potential than wilson.
