What rights did I have with physical media other than selling it when I was done?

I dunno about you, but I used to put all my CDs/DVDs in a giant pile, get naked, and start dan..........errrrrrr nevermind

Should I be impressed that a device is compatible with 12 internet sites?
4/2/2010 3:43:07 PM
4/2/2010 3:45:37 PM
If you have to create a dedicated page to tell people what sites are iPad compatible, it's not saying much when you only have 12.To me it just says, 'We don't like flash and we're making it work. Here are the sites that have bought into this mentality:"I love how when I insult a product or a brand, Golovko insults me.[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 3:52 PM. Reason : .]

It's unfortunate that while talking about the "latest web standards", Apple is pushing people to use incomplete and still questionable standards just to get video working on their products.Though I've made no secret of my current contempt for HTML5 video with my posts here on TWW, so just throw this on that pile.
4/2/2010 3:52:42 PM
If its not supported by IE, its not a web standard.
4/2/2010 4:16:58 PM
^^^ Dude, it's just marketing, nothing more or less. If it helps Apple sell some iPads, great. If it gets people interested in visiting those sites on their new iPad, great. Does it really have to be more complicated than that? If anything, Apple's running behind on updating that list... there have been literally dozens of sites that have started to tout that they're iPad-ready in the past couple of days. This isn't a point worth arguing over.[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 4:35 PM. Reason : .]

^Its because its Apple. People love to waste their time hating over Apple for no other reason then thats just what you do. Apple has changed significantly over the last decade and most 'nerds' can't come to terms with that...they still think its the same Apple we all hated on in high school and earlier. (that is if you graduated high school 10+ years ago).I for one fully admit that I was just as bad if not worse when it came to hating everything that is Apple. I did have limited experience on Macintosh computers pre-OS X and hated every minute of it.Like all Apple products, the iPad isn't for everyone but it will appeal to the masses. If you don't like the device why go out of your way to make it a point that you don't like it? I generally don't waste my time posting in threads about shit I don't care about or have no interest in using (i.e. android. Unless of course I'm bored and just want to piss in someones corn flakes).[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 4:42 PM. Reason : .]

i think the reason people hate apple has changed over the past 10 years, toobut this fucking thing is going to be a huge success. can't wait for second gen.people that are getting bent out of shape aren't the target market, so its okay, go ahead and go play on your netbooks. apple will get you some other way, if they haven't yet.[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 5:39 PM. ^I've yet to have a single instance where that situation has been a problem in real life.Mostly because I don't hoard things. If my parents see the first season of Obscure Show #1, and they want to see more of it, they just go home and queue it up on netflix, on their TWC On-Demand, or on Hulu. This "sharing" model assumes that none of your friends/family use digital distribution platforms. When everyone does (which, by and large, they do), this notion isn't really relevant anymore. My parent's wouldn't know how to "digitally" borrow something anyhow. They barely understand the concept of digital storage, much less media format for device dependency. But they sure as hell understand Netflix, On-Demand, and Hulu/Youtube
4/2/2010 6:54:48 PM
Okay, so can we get back on topic now?Is anyone camping out for one? Speak up!(disclaimer: I am not camping out.)
4/2/2010 6:58:39 PM
^^ I remember a time long ago when I would borrow video games and movies from friends. With an exception I haven't done this in forever or had someone ask to borrow something.Maybe a console game here and there but certainly not movies.^I will be camping out on my front porch waiting for Mr. Brown to deliver it.[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 7:43 PM. I lend movies often. I let my friend borrow a few seasons of scrubs and I am currently borrowing Watchmen from another friend.Music? Not so much. But books and movies hell yeah.

I would like someone to comment tomorrow if the durham apple store has a display/demo ipad. I might stop by if so. I for one am waiting for the 3g model.
4/2/2010 9:44:57 PM
Yeah, I guess the 3G models dont come out for a few more weeks, right?I would probably get it for development reasons if they had them tomorrow ...
4/2/2010 9:56:43 PM
^ Is the toolkit offered by Apple not sufficient to get started with development?
4/2/2010 9:59:48 PM
sure, to get started ... I mean for testing live ... mostly with gps features, for things things I have done.Yeah, dev toolkit is pretty lacking
4/2/2010 10:10:49 PM
Noen I would love to know how to share or trade or sell my steam games, you sir haven't been in a gamestop recently have you, or seen kids share their DS games... Point is, there is a big market for reselling goods so people can get their money back for somethings they no longer need
4/2/2010 10:13:06 PM
end of the month. I can't imagine as many people bought the non 3g version as evidently have.
4/2/2010 10:14:32 PM
^^ It seems to me then that the answer is not lamenting the end of physical media and freaking out over DRM (as Doctorow is wont to do), but rather encouraging and asking for the development of "sharing" capabilities for digital media. And not the shitty zune "squirting" type sharing. Something akin to digital copies of your media (whether books, games or movies) encrypted using one time expiring keys or something like that. For example, you decide you want to lend an eBook to someone, so you choose to share it for say 25 days or something like that. You send, from your device to theirs, the encrypted media and the key, which they must use to access the media each time, and which when it expires simply doesn't decode the media any more. Hell maybe it even offers you the chance to buy it then and there.Sure the content producers will freak out because your buddy can break the encryption (maybe) or extract the decrypted information on the fly, but ultimately, if you and your buddy are intent on doing that, the fact that they lock you down a bit on the iPad isn't really stopping you.The other problem of course is that it still requires some common software / app / interface to make this all work, but that I think isn't such a big deal these days if that interface is free / open.Ultimately though, this isn't going to come from Universal or EMI or Time Warner or any of the big companies that you want your media from. It's going to have to come from independent publishers, maybe a group of web comic publishers or something, with a common app to distribute eBooks that supports such sharing. Only by being proven in an "invaluable" market will such technology ever be accepted by larger content producers. Ironically, I think the competition Apple now faces in the digital distribution game means they aren't in a position to twist distributors arms into accepting a sharing system in the same way they twisted their arms for fixed, cheap pricing way back when.

So I went driving a little while ago here in Conservative Station, TX, and found that the local Apple reseller was closed all day today, apparently in preparation for "celebrating the iPad" tomorrow. Do they think this is like a furniture store having a clearance sale? Apple stores are not like a mini mall.
4/2/2010 10:49:13 PM
^I'm trying to make some sense of your post but am unable to...what exactly IS your point and why are you so upset about it?
4/3/2010 12:21:28 AM
nothing more than expressing my amusement over a small-time shop using it as an excuse to be closed for Good Friday.
4/3/2010 12:24:18 AM
I would hardly call apple stores 'small time shops' but to each his own.
4/3/2010 12:26:26 AM
I said local Apple reseller. College Station isn't big enough to have an actual Apple retail presence.
4/3/2010 12:27:21 AM
My mistake...I overlooked the reseller part. Is it like a mom and pop shop? I've never heard of apple resellers outside of the Apple Store and Best Buys. Back in the day it was CompUSA. I know Apple is such a stickler about granting stores to sell their shit without the proper 'training'
4/3/2010 12:30:47 AM
They really exist...http://www.mac-resource.com/And I'd know, god help me. I've spent probably a combined hour of my life in one of their stores waiting for them to fill out purchase paperwork for various work-related purchases.
4/3/2010 12:33:04 AM
oh yeah didn't think of college/student stores
4/3/2010 12:33:54 AM
At least there are no campout lines around here. Too bad, too, the weather here is perfect.
4/3/2010 12:36:09 AM
So who on here was saying a desktop background was a bad UI decision? http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/03/apple-ipad-review/So yeah a big iPhone. Maybe OS 4.0 will fix a lot of issues.

Command & Conquer on the iPadhttp://itunes.apple.com/us/app/command-conquer-red-alert/id363317738?mt=8^that was me and the discussion was on the iPhone after someone posted a screenshot of their painful to look at home screen.

I haven't received my iPad yet still waiting on UPS...so i'll get back to you. But on a desktop on my Mac its fine because the icons on the desktop aren't essential to see and regardless of the background the dock is always clear. The iPhone is a different story because of the limit size.
4/3/2010 10:18:32 AM
^Yeah just like the iPod touch. So for full GPS you need the 3G model.
4/3/2010 10:26:30 AM
a look inside the ipad
4/3/2010 10:32:58 AM
ROFL
4/3/2010 10:36:02 AM
lol... nice.I found a new reason this morning to pull the trigger and buy one at the local reseller: going paperless at work.
4/3/2010 10:50:36 AM
just picked it up... but no time to play, have to meet realtor to look at condos
4/3/2010 11:21:28 AM
just got mine. about to open it up.
4/3/2010 11:24:03 AM
ok, opened it... so light that what I thought was part of the packaging was the ipad itself hahaha
