a couple years? how many miles you think you have on em?sounds like you need new shoes nonetheless.go to a place that you can talk to about the rubbing issue and they can watch you run and recommend a fit for you.

atleast, 100 miles. I got them for the gym in 2009 and my running app says I've run 88 miles since may 2011 so I'm ballparking it at 100. I'll look around for some stores near me. Thanks!

I think there's something seriously wrong with me. I'm reading Maffetone and did his MAF test, which involves running (for me) below 155bpm for 5 miles. Olympic athletes in their 30s can do a 5 minute mile at that heart rate. I'm averaging between 14-15 minutes per mile. whath efuck.

^Lolz. I think I am going to have to DNF myself on my half-IM because of my heel pain- I will do the swim and bike but not the run. I did a trail half-marathon 2 weeks ago and had to walk/run the last 2 miles because the pain was excruciating. I will go to get it X-rayed after tri season is over-hopefully I will still be able to do cyclocross. It could be Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, or maybe a hairline fracture.

Ran the MCM 10K last weekend. Way too cold for this time of year, but alteast it was on Sunday instead of Saturday (freezing rain, sleet, and snow on Saturday).Of course way too many people got in the wrong corral (I'll never understand why slow runners or walkers feel the need to be in the first or second corral). The 14th street bridge was still iced over by the time we went over it, and I thought for sure I was goint to bust my ass a couple of times. Overall it was a really fun race, and I met some other Wolfpackers at the start line. Finished right at 46 mins, which I wasn't too happy with, but I guess it's ok considering the ankle problems a couple of months ago and the race conditions.[Edited on November 2, 2011 at 2:24 PM. Anyone doing any Turkey Trots in the Raleigh-Durham area over Thanksgiving? I've been thinking about doing the Ridgewood Turkey Trot http://www.ridgewoodshoppingcenter.com/turkeytrot or the Crossroads one http://www.ncraces.com/events/cross-roads-turkey-trot/ ]
11/17/2011 10:12:25 AM
Running in a Turkey Trot in my hometown, with all of probably 200 people Been looking at a watch, because I'm really tired of the inaccuracies of GPS apps, plus it would be nice to have HRM too. Anybody have any experience with the Garmin Forerunner 110 : http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerunner-GPS-Enabled-Sport-Monitor/dp/B003JTLKIA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2AI3O5SXZOBZH&colid=1R7PYGANI0DODI read to the reviews online. Just wanted to see if anybody on here had any experience, or anything to 'watch out for' ?
11/17/2011 11:45:39 AM
I'm in need of a running coach. I need to run faster. I'd like to get down to about 8 min/mile in a 3 mile run and would like to get to 7min/mile on 2 mile run. also I suck at running, and would like said coach to watch me run and give me things to improve on. I can pay in $ or beer.
12/5/2011 12:13:17 PM
you need to do speed work 1 or 2 times a week200m repeatsup hill is better
12/5/2011 3:43:03 PM
For the Forerunners, I ended up getting the 210. I really like it - only used it once so far but its very simple. I think its more accurate then the 110, has current pace, and supports a foot pod if I feel like shelling out $50. Also a 'premium softstrap heart monitor', whatever that means.Did the Vegas half with this, connected outside in like 15 seconds, shows Distance, Time, and Pace, and the scroll button replaces Time with HR. Downside is no bike cadence thingy, and its not waterproof. My boss is looking at the 910xt. A bit more but it does everything. What kinds of runs do you guys do during the week? I just do 2-3 short/1 long, but no intervals or tempos or whatever. My coach told me to get up to 4 runs if I want to do longer distances safely. I want to be overly prepared for a Marathon next year (don't care about pace) but do 5/10ks fast. Can you train for both or does going between the two not work?
12/7/2011 2:36:35 PM
^ Thanks. My mom's boss, who runs a marathon almost every single weekend, said he has the 110 and really likes it, so I'm probably going to stick with that one.I've been kind of doing the same thing. The two short runs are usually paced fairly quickly and I try to fall into a good comfortable pace for the long runs (7:30-7:45), but push the last 2 miles or so. It would be hard on me to run more than that and not end up burning out, since I also play in a soccer league and try to lift a couple times a week.I'm in the same boat race-wise too, I'd really like to get my time down for 5Ks-10Ks (Ran a 20:46 at the Turkey Trot 5K, so I'd like to break the 20 min mark). I'm also looking at doing my first half and full marathon, for which time is less important, but naturally I still have my expectations. So if you find any good information about finding a good balance, I'd be interested to hear it.As of now I have a three race series (5K, 6K, 8K) that starts in January and the last race is in Feb.The Shamrock Dolphin Challenge (8K on Saturday, Half on Sunday) in March.Possibly the Burlington, VT Marathon in MayMarine Marathon in Oct. (Deferred from last year).
12/7/2011 3:29:51 PM
do the richmond marathon in november. the course is awesome.
12/7/2011 3:33:38 PM
Vegas in December is worth it. Also the course is flat. (Just don't be looking for PR)I've heard the difference between a half and a full is pretty significant - May may be too soon if you're doing your first half in March. Mostly the wall around 20m..though I'm not opposed to doing 20 and walkrunning the rest for my first.Shamrock sounds fun. I'm trying to figure out if I can do the Goofy (Half+Full) Jan 2013, but don't know if a year's enough. Also I'd kill for a 20m 5k!
12/7/2011 3:45:32 PM
I have hit 200 miles this year, which for me is crazy.I'm still slow as hell, but seeing some improvement.

A dude actually yelled "you run like a girl" at me this morning.Dude, that's insult to girls.Funny thing is I needed to keep my heart rate down during the run but couldn't. It was 20 points elevated and all I could do is fantasize about slicing the guy's face off.

^ http://www.zappos.com/mizuno-wave-elixir-6-white-cyber-yellow-anthraciteLove my mizuno waves. I used to be an asics die hard (kayano, many others) but eventually got fitted for shoe based on my running style and got the recommendation for mizunos. I was reluctant but gave them a shot for training and ended up really liking them. To be fair, I havent really found a shoe Ive disliked besides adidas though (maybe Nike, but theyre OK).

so the horrible pain that i had last year in my foot/ankle has returned. in doing some googling i found that it seems to be an issue with the peroneus tendon. i get the pain on the ankle and on the side of my foot when walking/running. it only came back suddenly when i was walking around on friday night. i did get some new sneakers but hadn't even started using them when the pain came back.anybody have any experience with this and/or solutions?
1/8/2012 2:15:37 PM
^^^Check 6pm.com. I went to a store in Raleigh and tried on a pair that I like, and made sure I knew what size I needed. Then I went on 6pm and found them for about half the price. Also, have been using Adidas Micoach app and I really like it.
1/8/2012 2:30:44 PM
ahh sweet.thanks guysi noticed I have the nike plus app on my phone but the case for my phone has yet to have an integrated arm band, so I may not be using it in the end.probably go with old school watch method to time runs. that or buy a cheap armband and swap it out every day

If you don't mind minimalist, I like these. http://www.zappos.com/inov-8-road-x-155-yellow-whiteThey're hideous, but kinda cool looking. (They are REALLY yellow) I think they weigh less then my Vibrams.. its really nice not having that weight on your foot. They also have enough cushioning to feel nice. Had to switch from Vibrams when I upped my cadence; the top of my foot got crazy painful.. I think it was because I was occasionally not landing on my heel and my foot wasn't strong enough to handle it. I have no idea how you strengthen your feet muscles otherwise. Speaking of injuries, anyone deal with a sore hip flexor? It doesn't get sore until after a run. My PT wasn't really sure what to do with it - it usually goes away in a day so its kinda hard to pinpoint.

Wore my Uggs all day yesterday walking around NYC and unfortunately my foot is in so much pain this am. It was even feeling better on Friday I might have to go see a podiatrist to get some in soles for my shoes. Bugger

my hamstrings are terribly inflexible

My gf is starting to run with me. She's suffering from pretty bad shin splints. We'll do 5k and she'll be in pain for 2+ days.I'm pretty sure splints are caused by excessive heal strike, right? I've conveyed this to her, but honestly she isn't in good enough shape yet, or enjoying running enough yet to work on her form/stride?Any advice on preventing, or medicating splints would be greatly appreciated.
1/16/2012 11:15:17 AM
the best thing she can do is rest. there are some stretches as well. put your back flat against the wall and put a 2x4 under your feet.. do that for some time. then put maybe another piece of wood. but who knows how far you can stretch.. its not your shins that hurt, its the muscle thats being screwed with. so you pretty much have to stretch it out and get it back to spec. stretch your toes towards your body and away.. youtube probably has some good vids.

I think I've caught runner's knee. How long did you take to get back on the road?
1/17/2012 7:57:10 AM
I would usually rest it about a week and do other exercises that had little/no impact. High incline walking on treadmill, eliptical, etc.
1/17/2012 8:44:01 AM
Probably not runners knee, guy who runs ultras at work seems to think my IBS needs more stretching and to do more cross training for quads
1/19/2012 8:35:26 AM
Get a sports massage and ask them how tight your ITs are. I had a really bad knee issue last year that knocked me out of running for 5 weeks. I got a sports massage once a month, and most of the time the masseusist told me my ITs were super tight. I was building distance and became a problem when I did 9+ mile runs.Do you tend to heel strike? If you do one thing that helped me was moving to a higher foot cadence and this eventually changed how I landed. Since then I never had an issue with my knee.. just don't overdo it. (If you change your run patterns it can fuck up other parts of your body, but knees should be fine!)

just started runningwhat do y'all recommend in the way of sports drinks?

the blood of an innocentno seriously. sports drinks??? [Edited on January 21, 2012 at 3:53 PM. Reason : ]
1/21/2012 3:53:01 PM
best sports drink is water. It's winter (less sweating), and if you are just starting, you likely aren't running long enough to have a need for replacing electrolytes.
1/21/2012 8:19:32 PM
whole milk
1/22/2012 7:54:24 PM
Water. Hydrate steadily all day. don't try to drink a lot of water before or after you run.
1/23/2012 3:54:06 AM
plz guys, i have a match tonight
1/23/2012 6:40:36 AM
A match?I'd go with water. If you're doing something beyond what you normally do, maybe watered down gatorade. I take some G2 with me during long runs and its made a difference.

Yay, 1/2 marathon today. Placed 26th out of 1156. 1:25 time, felt pretty good since my training fell off big time in January. Hope to get below 1:20 in 6 weeks.
2/6/2012 12:48:04 AM
^^That blows my mind. I just read this last year:It kills me that at my fastest mile (7:00), there are still people that can run nearly TWICE as fast as me (3:43 being the world record).[Edited on February 6, 2012 at 7:43 AM. Reason : asdfadsf]

I posted this in the Beachbody thread but I guess it really belongs here lol (I keep forgetting this thread exists)Here are my upcoming races for this year, I'm starting a 14 week training for the 10 mile run on May 6th and then training for my first half which is in SeptemberFebruary 5: Super Bowl 5k TIME 36:09 PACE 11:39 (36 mins was my goal after taking a couple of months off after an injury, so I'm really happy with this and I know I can do even before)March 31: Phillies Charities 5kApril 14: Team Up with Habitat 5KApril 22: Valley Forge Revolutionary 5 Mile RunMay 6: Broad Street 10 Mile RunSeptember 16: Philadelphia Half Marathon (my first)October 28: MCM10kNovember 6: Raleigh City of Oaks Half Marathon (maybe or if I dont do the Philly Rock&Roll)I also got checked out for new shoes at my local running store, I ended up choosing Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11, they should ready for me to pick up by the end of the week, so excited! I've really worn out my old shoes, they still have the blood on them that a posted about before in this thread
2/6/2012 2:07:33 PM
i bought a pair of Brooks last fall and don't regret it. they work really well with my feet and are very comfortable.
2/6/2012 2:28:38 PM
I bought some of the minimalist New Balance trail runners...has anyone else who has switched to a "minimal shoe" had really bad pains in their arches? I went on a 2 mile break in run and after 1 mile my arches had like shooting pains. Is this normal during the break in period?
