The Chargers are around 43 million under the cap for next season, so look for them to make some moves this off-season. I'd like to see an OL if Hoff retires and/or a premiere WR to really take the passing game to a new level.

I think they are fine with WRs. Vincent really came on in the playoffs with Gates playing hurt. And Chambers is great. With Gates back healthy, Tomlinson out of the backfield, and Parker coming back next year, the WRs will be more than fine.

I agree with adding an o-lineman...but I think they need to shore the secondary up a little more. They could make a couple moves, but I think they really need to get rid of Drayton Florence. That guy got abused all year.

Other than that...get everybody healthy again.

^^Yeah just a typo.

I think if Goff retires we need to go after Faneca from Pitt and hope we can shift him from LG to RG. He's still young enough to play a few more years and help shore up our OL.

I agree we need someone besides Florence, but do we really go out and get a big name like Asante Samuel when we have a young Pro-Bowler like Cromartie and a solid starter in Jammer on the other side?

I'd say possibly an upgrade at S. I'd love an upgrade at both, I figured McCree would have been dumped last off-season but maybe this year they can find a safety worth picking up.

And the WR core is above average currently. V-Jax has the physical traits to become a dominant WR, but he's really streaky. He has great size and athletic ability, hands and routes aren't great, but those are coach-able things, hopefully the new WR coach can get him going. I think Chambers will be RFA but I think he did enough to warrant a new contract. Parker coming back should upgrade the slow position and help stretch the field, and maybe Davis will do a little more next year.

^I was thinking the same thing after 1-3, but he did a decent job down the stretch. Really they need to find their long-term coach and stick with him because P-Riv has always had to switch coaches/coordinators, some consistency would be nice for him and the rest of the team.

Norv was good down the stretch, especially considering all of the injuries they had.

I didn't say we needed a big name...but anyone better than Florence would do. And when you're in the AFC with teams that have great receiving corps like the Colts and the Pats, then I do think we need to upgrade the secondary.

And I agree with Jackson being streaky, but I think a big reason for that has been Philip's over-reliance on Gates and Tomlinson (and more recently Chambers). When Philip needed Jackson in the playoffs, he was there. Hopefully it will carry on into next year and the offense will be even more scary.

florence is a free agent and is as good as gone (that was pretty much known all season), so we need another corner... mccree will be released, turner's gone, possibly volek and 'zo neal ()

also receivers coach (james lofton) was let go, replaced by charlie joiner

and on the injury front, turns out kaeding was playing with a broken plant leg since the denver game:

I can't believe that kaeding was playing with a broken leg and they still got him to do kickoffs (terribly) so they could save a roster spot for Neal, who also has a broken leg. What were they thinking?

They need a kickoff specialist who can boom them out of the endzone.

I would love to see them pick up Lance Briggs in the offseason, that would improve their defense tremendously.

I don't see where Lance Briggs would fit into that defense unless he is gonna convert to ILB. He's definitely not a 3-4 OLB.

An above-average safety would do wonders for that defense. Weddle will take over for McCree and should be an upgrade, but Hart is caught out of position way too often.

I doubt the Chargers make a splash in free-agency. Maybe they sign a lineman or 2, but they are set at most of the skills positions. They need to draft a nose tackle or a safety with their first round pick this year.

Yeah I forgot to say that he would be converted to ILB. Their OLB pair right now is great, and their ILB pair is alright, but could use an upgrade.

I agree about the safety, but I'm not sure if there's a great safety available right now in FA. They should use their #1 on it if there's one available.

I think they consider Anthony Waters an eventual starter at ILB. He was still recovering from a knee injury this season.

And I thought Weddle was more of a strong safety (i.e., he'd be supplanting Hart, not McCree).

Briggs would be a possibility, let him take Wilhelm's spot and help with run-support since that was lacking this season at times. Yeah I'd love them to get a big-time safety but I don't see any big names on the FA list. I think the only big acquisitions they'll make will be on OL and maybe re-work/extend some contracts for the future.

"Somewhere else" meaning Atlanta?

They signed him today.

I never even thought the Chargers would try to keep Turner, thought that was a lost cause from the get-go.

I just can't figure out why they have all this cap room and some big-names are out there and they aren't even mentioned for going after any of those players. I figured they'd at least look into a player like Moss or Faneca.

^ A.J. Smith has never been one to sign big free agents. He prefers to build through the draft. Part of the problem with free agency is that you inevitably overpay for the big names, and Smith has stated his dislike of overpaying on multiple occasions. He has a model of operation and sticks to it.

The biggest problem is that the free agent market is pretty weak in the areas of their biggest need.

I mean, you look over the Chargers roster, they don't have a whole lot of weak spots.

They suck hardcore at safety, but there isn't really a stand out one available. They could use an upgrade at ILB, and I thought they should try to go after Briggs, but apparently he's locked up in Chicago now.
