i really really want to play this but every time I try, I find myself thinking this is just Oblivion and I'd rather not do it all againIf I was to reroll, I definitely don't want to go hack 'n slash, like I always end up going in RPGs. Recommend me some talents/points I should go into so I stay away from that. I also don't want to go assassin/thief, while immensely fun for Oblivion, I've done it far too long. I need to try a more magic/passive approach. Is a speechcraft build any fun? I dunno if I want to be a guns guy either since my last Oblivion char was a ranger/thief...before that redguard barbarianoh i played a warrior all of WoW, melee paladin all of D2X, melee char all of Dungeon Siege, melee char all of NWN2, melee char in Fableare there alternatives to ranger/warrior in Fallout?
11/21/2008 7:11:34 AM
you can go "Mice of Men" like I diddumb as fuck, but very high luck, strength and endurance
11/21/2008 7:50:10 AM
^^If by "ranger" you mean ranged weapons and "warrior" you mean melee...It doesn't really work like that. At least not the same as Oblivion, given the vast differences in the strength of enemies and the less-harsh level scaling system.I'd call a small guns or plasma weapons specialist a ranger, and I'd call a big guns specialist more of a tank/warrior. I'd call a melee specialist... umm... the gimped class due to the nature of bringing a knife to a gun fight, and the nature of fighting melee-using enemies (the block system in the game is a little... umm... well, stupid). I tried it for a couple hours and it simply wasn't that fun... the melee enemies use block a ton, and it's annoying taking all sorts of damage while closing the gap on a gun-user who is backpedaling (or outright sprinting away from you, as some enemies flee when they get hurt). Even worse is when you're in both types, because regardless of which group you decide to tackle first, the other one is probably going to be drilling you from behind (no homo). Yeah, it's harder, but not "challenging" hard, just "annoying and time-consuming" hard. I'm sure they get much better later in the game, like when you start one-shotting most/many enemies, and when you've got items like the Deathclaw Gauntlet or the Shiskebab, but it's certainly a huge bitch to play when you're still under level 8 or so. Also, melee isn't THAT bad in buildings or areas with a lot of hallways/corners, since you can easily force a anged enemy to come close to you with line-of-sight... but again, it's not hard as in challenging, just hard as in time-wasting.A sneak-based character I would definitely call an assassin or thief, but just FYI don't specialize in melee combat with sneak... because of the way they made the awareness/detection system of enemies, it is INCREDIBLY hard to sneak up into melee range on things, because not only do they turn around a lot, but to avoid being heard by them you need to walk, which is far too slow to catch them before they reach the end of their patrol and turn around to look at you (until you get a certain perk at level 12... maybe level 10... it lets you run in sneak without being heard... regardless it is still incredibly hard to get a sneak-attack-critical on a non-stationary enemy by using a melee weapon, since their patrol routes are usually really fucking short, and there's sometimes shit on the ground which makes noise when you step on it, preventing you from making a direct beeline for their back).I've heard explosives is very good, provided you can supply yourself with enough mines and grenades. This is also probably the closest thing you're going to get to a "spellcaster" sort of class. I plan to try it out soon, everyone I've asked that did it said it was fun to play. Not really that good in VATS mode, though, given how often collision errors occur with the cover you're hiding behind (throwing three grenades at an enemy with 95% chance to hit, only to have all three of them collide with the air slightly above the edge of a table/railing/rock and land right at your feet = bad)... better if manually thrown, once you learn the game's grenade physics well enough. In terms of weapons classes, you've basically just got:-Common items that mostly do average damage, but with some rarer and higher-damage weapons thrown in (small guns)-Rarer weapons which function much like small guns but in general do more damage (energy weapons)-Semi-rare weapons which despite their weight and rarity are actually rather mediocre (big guns)-That guy from Indiana Jones who spends 15 seconds displaying his mad awesome sword skills, only to be shot to death in the chest (melee weapons/unarmed)-Highly effective and somewhat common weapons that unfortunately have a kind of low ammo supply (explosives)If you're going to go melee/unarmed, I recommend doing so in conjunction with some sot of ranged weapon... probably energy weapons or explosives.Again, if you want to try a "magic/passive" build, explosives are probably your best bet as a primary weapon. And specializing in something like Barter would definitely increase your ability to get "ammo" (though by the middle/end of the game, pretty much any class is going to have more than enough cash to buy out all the ammo from every merchant). Unfortunately, though, things like Science and Repair aren't viable in combat as passive skills... in fact, unless there's an automated turret with a control terminal nearby, they're not viable at all in combat.[Edited on November 21, 2008 at 8:00 AM. Generally I try to use up my frag mines on the smaller radscorpions or talon mercs who melee. I save the Bottlecap mines (which are much more explosive= ) for the super mutant groups or deathclaws. Your explosives skill doesnt really need to be all that great to effectively hit a target or group with frag grenades, they're just so damn weak.

I recently happened upon the oasis. Will I skip any main quest stuff by doing anything there?
11/22/2008 9:30:31 AM
Nah.
11/22/2008 10:19:00 AM
No Oasis is strictly a side quest area.
11/22/2008 12:45:42 PM
is there any online or multiplayer to this game?
11/22/2008 12:47:43 PM
Not that i know of, putting in a little online co op without making it an MMO would be cool though
11/22/2008 12:53:34 PM
would--and should--never work as a mmorpgthis is how you separate the fallout newbies and the old school fallout people
11/22/2008 1:39:07 PM
you mean, this is how old school fallout players make themselves feel good about having come to fallout before other peopleI'm Big Business and i approved this message.

^^ I'm a fallout OG and I'm excited about the Fallout MMORPG that's coming.
11/22/2008 6:54:03 PM
This game isn't as good as Fallout 1&2, especially the ending, which was god awful. It's still a great game though
11/22/2008 6:59:07 PM
Haha, you can't be serious.
11/22/2008 7:01:49 PM
about what?

11/22/2008 9:36:28 PM
this game has sucked so much time from me. I'm not even doing anything really, just wandering around seeing what's to be seen and doing the random side quest every now and then. i just turned over tenpennny tower to the ghouls. i've been playing as a good guy, but those snooty bigots in the tower pissed me off so it seemed only fair.
11/23/2008 1:35:48 AM
I was going to play through the Tenpenny Tower plotline in the highest-karma way possible, but then I found out you didn't lose any karma for killing the ghouls... and then I found out that you get positive karma for killing Tenpenny....So I nailed his head to his chair with the railway rifle, then dropped the body off the building. Was quite satisfying.
11/23/2008 9:55:40 AM
^^^I too played a good guy, and if you aren't too far in the game after turning over the tower, I'd suggest pickpocketing the keys from everyone, just replace your lost karma with some water for the bums.Spoiler, just in caseAfterwards, the ghouls basically kill every human in tenpenny and all of their (the vendors) stuff is inaccessible without their keys, as their bodies are supposedly in the basement but aren't. One of these is a schematic I believe, which pisses me off. You do get the ghoul mask tho.[Edited on November 23, 2008 at 10:35 AM. Reason : ^shit thats what I should've done I guess. Figured diplomacy would give the best experience]
11/23/2008 10:34:56 AM
didnt realized how much i missed by just blowing up megaton right away heh.
11/23/2008 11:01:48 AM
When I start getting bored with the game, it's always nice to just pull out the railway rifle and just go on a "nailing people to unusual objects in funny ways" rampage.
11/23/2008 11:07:30 AM
^^^^how did you drop his body off the building. i'm playing on the xbox, does the pc version have more controls?
11/23/2008 11:58:50 AM
sounds like you can move things around, which you cant do in xbox to my knowledge. if you shoot him in the head on the balcony he goes flying off the building though.
11/23/2008 12:07:21 PM
I don't know the button that does it for console, but on both PC and Xbox you are able to grab items and drop them somewhere else. I actually had forgotten all about it till I watched someone playing it on the Xbox... which then prompted me to look at my key binding options on PC.You can also use this trick to steal items... just pick them up manually and haul them over to another room where no one can see you steal it.Ah, found it through the magic of Google, as an unconfirmed forum post:
11/23/2008 12:08:27 PM
well shit, nearly 50 hours into it and i'm still learning the controls.
11/23/2008 12:42:10 PM
I never knew that either (if it actually works) and I am in at about 70% of the game.
11/23/2008 12:52:18 PM
11/23/2008 12:52:52 PM
You just said that like no one else just mentioned it in the thread LOL.
11/23/2008 12:54:27 PM
left stick is sneak heh. never had a need to steal. no use abusing the game to steal shit. id rather just steal and kill anyone who tries to stop me.
11/23/2008 1:10:26 PM
^Doesn't quite work for me... I'm playing a more ruthless good character... basically doing a ton of good deeds but stealing everything that isn't nailed down. Even pencils. If there are 8 pencils on someone's desk, I will stop at nothing (short of murder) to steal them. If it is worth anything at all and doesn't put me over/near my weight limit, I officially consider it my property.I mean, if I see something as awesome as a bottlecap mine just sitting around in a store, it just feels bad to walk out the door without owning it. Hell, it bothers me to not steal stuff as trivial as pre-war money or cherry bombs.[Edited on November 23, 2008 at 1:19 PM. Reason : .]
11/23/2008 1:18:55 PM
Cherry Bombs are actually very valuable, if you don't take them when you see them you'll soon wish you did.
11/23/2008 2:35:30 PM
^^ Is that sarcasm? Or are cherry bombs actually valuable? I've been collecting them whenever I see them, but haven't found what they are used for yet?
11/23/2008 4:09:16 PM
They are used to make bottlecap mines, which are awesomePlus they don't weigh anything, so collecting them has no downside
11/23/2008 4:12:22 PM
I was wondering if the game provides any incentives to play through a 2nd time? I love this game...but I'm not sure if I have the time to give it a 2nd play through. Does anything carry over to a new game? Bobbleheads maybe? Starting a new game with all the Bobbleheads that I earned in my last play through would be pretty fun.
11/23/2008 4:51:08 PM
shrug, i started over being a good char with high speech. seems plenty diff and im doing quests i couldnt or wouldnt do before.
11/23/2008 5:14:21 PM
^^I mostly did the main quest the first time through. Now I'm mostly exploring and finding all the locations.
11/23/2008 6:59:27 PM
Is it possible to kill everyone in Little Lamplight?
11/24/2008 3:33:38 PM
dont think so. stupid kids.

11/24/2008 6:33:00 PM
^^^The game doesn't allow you to kill children.
11/24/2008 7:43:04 PM
Except of course for the implied child deaths in the explosion of Megaton.
