it's not often that Google shares this kind of data, but they say ~70% of all gmail mail is spamhttp://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/how-our-spam-filter-works.html

Nice!! IMAP has finally been enabled in my "Google Apps for Your Domain" account!

Google's OpenSocial API/application framework is coming to every major social networking site except Facebook. this is a big deal for web developers - write once, run anywhere (except facebook..... for now)http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071101-google-goes-after-facebook-with-new-opensocial-social-networking-api.htmlhttp://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-11-02-n46.htmlhttp://google.blognewschannel.com/archives/2007/11/01/google-drops-the-bomb-myspace-joins-the-fight/

^^ outside of myspace, i wonder what the collection reach of all those other social networks is compared to facebook
11/2/2007 3:34:40 PM
i read in one of those articles (can't find it now) that all other social networks combined are still a fraction of facebook, which is still a fraction (albeit a large, and growing, fraction) of myspace. at least in the US - apparently (Google's) Orkut is like myspace in Brazil. Somehow, the pageviews from Orkut in brazil alone are more than all the Search pageviews Google serves. .... or maybe Orkut in Brazil is 2nd to Google Search pageview.
11/2/2007 3:43:36 PM
11/2/2007 4:02:22 PM
yeah, that sounds better. here is some data from just a couple weeks ago that shows Orkut as the 5th domain in the world in pageviews in Septhttp://blogs.zdnet.com/ITFacts/?p=13352
Top domains by pageviews in September 2007Site Pageviews, bln.Yahoo! 55.31MySpace 49.72Google 34.63Facebook 34.54Orkut 32.80Live 31.90MSN 29.52YouTube 21.37

It's a nautical reference, from the days when you could tell friend or foe based on the shape(cut) of their jib sail.
11/2/2007 6:51:42 PM
Far as slow IMAP performance ... imagine if you will the sheer numbers of people currently downloading their entire Gmail account through IMAP ... that's why it's so slow right now Once everyone's done making local copies, it should be a good bit zippier. But I honestly don't care, I'm just happy to have it!

Went to using the Google Apps suite a couple of weeks ago. I really, really dig the integration, but having everything in one place still scares the shit out of me. Google now officially owns my ass.
11/3/2007 10:25:54 AM
yes, google does in fact own your ass. here is their new Privacy Policyhttp://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-10-31-n24.html

Google announcing "Android" their new mobile operating system right now.Live coverage from Engadget:http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/05/live-coverage-of-googles-android-gphone-mobile-os-announcement/
11/5/2007 12:11:37 PM
hmm, yeah. seeing a trend here. instead of creating another new social networking site, google came out with OpenSocial last week - a unified programming platform for any social network that wants to join. now, instead of coming out with "the gPhone", they're just introducing a unified programming platform for any phone maker that wants to join. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/11/05/piper_jaffray_on_googles_android_apple_and_the_iphone.html
11/5/2007 4:40:56 PM
so how the fuck will this ever affect me? i thought i was gonna get a free cell phone like i signed up for gmail, now you're telling me i gotta switch to Verizon and buy a phone and service only to see google's shit all over the phone?[Edited on November 5, 2007 at 5:28 PM. Reason : ]

in the future, if you decide to buy a phone that supports the Android platform, you could theoretically have access to a lot more (and presumably better) applications than you ever have in the past, where you were limited to applications written specifically for 1) your carrier, 2) your phone, 3) your phone's OS, or 4) a combination of all thoseso..... nothing tangible at the moment. but maybe something else. sometime.
11/5/2007 5:31:43 PM
All that hype just to tell us we have to wait for something that may or may not be crap. I love the internet.
11/5/2007 6:57:11 PM
Yeah i'm curious to see where this is going to go.It'll be something to see how the carriers react to the software once software such as VoIP comes in to play.
11/5/2007 8:51:03 PM
Orkut is wierd... does anyone actually use this?
11/6/2007 12:00:14 PM
yeah, apparently everybody in Brazil does

nice, i just now got the "Gmail 2.0" rollout. definitely faster. much more responsive. opening messages and moving around is almost instantaneous. also, mailboxes, labels, and searches are now linkable with a new URL structure. i would still like to see features like Ctrl/Shift-Select for multiple selections, drag-and-drop messages, and a tabbed interface for working on multiple messages.
11/8/2007 8:00:31 AM
^ Control/Shift selections is already implemented
11/8/2007 8:49:03 AM
2.0 broke my gmailskin firefox plugin.
11/8/2007 9:15:17 AM
oh, right. well, i guess my main complaint with that, then, is that there is no drag/drop after you select, and the checkbox is too small for a target. i think if you hold ctrl or shit and click anywhere on the message, it should select it, instead of opening it.
11/8/2007 9:18:35 AM
i hope yall dont consider this off topic, but why cant google make an operating system? i'm really worried about getting vista when i get my new laptop...
11/8/2007 9:19:24 AM
they are making an operating system. it's for your phone though.
11/8/2007 9:24:12 AM
wal-marts going to sell a computer with "gOS" on it; ubuntu installed thats oriented towards google's online apps. Its not done by google and not exactly an operating system....but its a step in that direction. I don't see why google would go with a full out operating system installed with all these apps when they can just have you use their online ones. google will probably buy the company that developed the software.
11/8/2007 9:34:10 AM
the wal-mart "gOS" box has nothing to do with google. gOS technically stands for Green OS, and is just another flavor of Linux.

along with the "gmail 2.0" backend rewrite, Google created an official Gmail Greasemonkey API. This is really cool of them, and basically "gives permission" to Greasemonkey developers to add onto Gmail. There was some speculation earlier that Google was disabling Gmail accounts that had GM scripts, but that should not be the case any more.http://code.google.com/p/gmail-greasemonkey/wiki/GmailGreasemonkey10API

Ever thought: Hey Google Maps didn't mark my house/etc in the proper location? Now you can fix it!! http://maps.google.com/help/maps/edit/promo.htmlJust search for your address, click "Edit," click "Move Marker," and drag the marker to your front door. Of course, you need to be logged in to a Google account. But, wait, there's more!! Not only can you update your address, but you can fix any location you want to. However, if you move the marker more than 200 meters it gets moderated for absurdity before the changes post.Any change under 200 meters from the original location is updated immediately, it's true, I fixed my house address

new "Terrain" view in Google Maps, shows a Topo maphttp://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/11/explore-new-terrain.htmland this is cool - when you search for an address or business that is covered with the Street View photos, it will automatically show a street shot thumbnailhttp://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/11/another-way-to-take-in-view.htmloh yeah. and they're committing to spending hundreds of millions of $ to research renewable energy sourceshttp://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/20071127_green.htmlhttp://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-11-27.html#n52ah, and one more thing. When you create "My Maps", you can now make them collaborative. you can either select people to collaborate with, or open it to the publichttp://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/11/my-our-maps.html[Edited on November 27, 2007 at 9:20 PM. Ok, it's NOT a Topo map ... it's a Terrain map ... BIG difference. The Terrain map is useless to anyone worth their salt in the outdoors. Well actually, it's just plain worthless no matter who uses it. Cute to look at, Google, but give us Topo, please.
