ok, not to split hairs, but going from 3G (~15/5) to 4G (1000/500) seems a bit extreme, I just wish they'd leave LTE/WiMax/HSPA+ and call it 4G and call LTE-Advanced and WiMax 802.16m 5G... but whatev.just glad the 4S is hitting all the carriers[Edited on October 7, 2011 at 6:40 PM. Reason : .]

Damn last post Wondering if I should include the AppleCare+ with my new 4s. With the new 49 dollar replacement fee included not sure if apple is going to change their lenient policies regarding damage replacement.

AT&T is trying to get Apple to display a 4G icon when the 4S is in HSPA+ mode. http://www.tuaw.com/2011/10/07/apple-reportedly-working-with-atandt-to-display-4g-in-status-bar/

Hmm, trying to decide if it's worth the upgrade from the 4 to the 4s (I've only had the 4 for a little over a year but both of my lines are eligible for the upgrade for some reason). FWP LIEK WHOA
10/8/2011 11:12:49 AM
A guy I work with who is the "resident apple expert" said that when he upgraded from his 3G to the 3GS, he wasn't sure he would see much difference...however, he said it was well worth it and he could see a noticable difference in speed. He hypothesizes that someone upgrading from a 4 to a 4s will see a similar change.he says i should be blown away after upgrading from a droid eris to the iphone 4SQuestion: Currently on my droid eris, i have my gmail synced with it, so that when I get an email, i automatically get a notification on my phone...can i do the same with the iphone?[Edited on October 8, 2011 at 11:32 AM. 10/8/2011 11:30:41 AM
can't every phone do that?
10/8/2011 11:33:47 AM
lol. Anything is a step up from the Droid Eris.
10/8/2011 11:35:32 AM
i do it through the "gmail" app on my droid erisi didn't know if iphone had the gmail app since it is a google thing
10/8/2011 11:35:55 AM
If you're a Gmail addict, as I am, you will be profoundly let down by the stock "Mail" app on iOS compared to the native Gmail app on Android. The labels don't work right. Archiving doesn't work right. Threads don't work right. It's Apple's take on how a Google product should work."Real" Gmail and Google Maps Nav keeps me on Android. Most everything else is better on iOS.
10/8/2011 11:44:11 AM
whether you use the gmail app or the default iphone email app its still gonna notify you thoughmy OG droid stopped notifying me though about 6 months ago, i have to manually push all email updates but my contract is up in december so hopefully the prime is out by then, otherwise ill get the 4s
10/8/2011 11:45:28 AM
OK, so if i set that up, and i get a gmail, even if my phone is in my pocket and not being used, it will still beep/vibrate/whatever to let me know i received a new mail? I had heard you had to manually check gmail on the iphone...what about the facebook app? does that notify you? on my droid eris, i have to manually open the facebook app to see anything...
10/8/2011 11:47:57 AM
my facebook app notifies me...its all up to the settings
10/8/2011 11:52:19 AM
So Apple is selling factory unlocked iPhone 4s' contract free in November. $649 for 16 gig. I'm jumping on one of these. It's a pain in my ass having to unlock it each time I go over seas and deal with the bugs that come with older unlocks and modem firmware versions. This is sweet.

^so the iphone 4 and older did not have lock screen notifications?
10/8/2011 8:32:08 PM
i'm running iOS5 on my iphone 4...but no they don't have lock screen notifications normally. iOS5 will be available to everybody soon, so the older ones will too (if you update it & install iOS5)[Edited on October 8, 2011 at 8:39 PM. Reason : ]

awesome...i just watched a few video tutorials of "siri"...looks interesting, but i'm wondering how often i'll actually use it..also, does facetime require wifi? Or can you do it over the cell network?
10/8/2011 9:01:00 PM
in iOS5 facetime does not require wifi.
10/8/2011 10:11:51 PM
Seriously? That's fucking awesome! I'm getting one for me and my wife. We've been using the 3g and 3gs for sometime now. Time for the upgrade and would love to be able to call and see her when I travel.
10/9/2011 12:43:14 AM
Facetime in iOS5 is capable of being run over 3G but all of the carriers are blocking it.
10/9/2011 9:05:11 AM
Is Siri an actual selling point? I just can't see myself using it that much day to day. It's nice and all, but sort of a niche thing.
10/9/2011 11:23:20 AM
I'll probably use it when in the car. Probably not much other than that. If it works well
10/9/2011 12:12:48 PM
^^^So does that mean i'll be able to do it or not?^^i'm wondering that as well. i'll probably give it a whirl, but am skeptical if i'll end up using it a lot[Edited on October 9, 2011 at 3:48 PM. Reason : yea]

The one thing I'd miss from android if I got an iPhone is voice to text, now that iOS has notifications. If Siris voice to text works anywhere near as well, I'd definitely use it.
10/9/2011 4:30:48 PM
there's a free app for dictation that will type what you say, but you have to use your fingers to tell it to send a text or email. it works really well though. dragon dictation.
10/9/2011 6:22:28 PM
10/9/2011 6:34:57 PM
with most voice apps "CALL - HOME"what it actually does "UNABLE TO PROCESS VOICE COMMAND"ok... "CALL JERRY"what it actually does "SORRY, JESUS NOT IN PHONE BOOK"
10/9/2011 8:13:12 PM
im just rarely in a situation where i can loudly scream commands at my phone, like others have said the car is about the only place i could make use of this and im not in the car enough for it to be a selling point, still i respect the tech and would be an added bonus
10/9/2011 8:16:06 PM
fwiw, there seem to be a lot of assumptions about how well/poorly Siri will work... but nobody's held a 4S in their hands yet
10/9/2011 8:46:58 PM
i dont doubt apple will have it first but im waiting for the tech where the forward facing camera can follow my eyes and open apps and perform actions based on how intently i am staring at a portion of the screen
10/9/2011 9:01:34 PM
I used to have Siri back when it was available as a separate app and it worked well especially to look up random facts but obviously it wasn't as well integrated into the phone. I particularly enjoyed asking it "What is the meaning of life" to which it replied with "42", fantastic. Here's a limited hands on review btw;http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/04/bbc-gets-a-hands-on-with-the-iphone-4s-and-siri-personal-assistant/I saw another one by cnet uk that was a bit more comprehensive but can't seem to be able to locate it. My reaction to the 4S is similar to the iPad... in that it went from "I bet this thing will sell a bunch, I'll sit it out for a while" to "Hmm, I think I'll go ahead and pick one up"...

I thought you can get the "international version" option.
10/10/2011 9:39:34 AM
As much as everyone was dissapoint, Apple still get a ton of pre-orders.
10/10/2011 11:54:56 AM
They were smart to use Nuance's VR rather than their own.Nuance is pretty much the standard for voice recognition. NUAN is their ticker. I've owned them in the past and made some nice cash on 'em.
10/10/2011 4:42:45 PM
so today my iphone 3g decides to go in to recovery mode. I have tried everything to get out of the mode. Recboot, tiny umbrella, hold the power/home button is so many ways. Can anybody help?? I don't want to restore since I haven't backed my phone up in a month! Please help..
10/10/2011 6:41:24 PM
^^ i read a rumor they were using Nuance, but has that been confirmed?
10/10/2011 6:45:15 PM
So I got to thinking today...Would it be better to get my phone from Best Buy? I have a 15% off if that works with it, not only that but dont they have a plan you can but for like $15 that if the phone messes up in a year or so they replace it?Am I just assuming that exists?
10/10/2011 7:35:14 PM
^noget apple care. be done with it.The phone itself has a 1 year warranty from apple from the time you activate.any time after that you will need "apple care". The techs there told me to get it, and I will soon. If anything happens, boom, replacement.
10/10/2011 7:47:35 PM
the thing from best buy is $15 PER MONTH. not a one time fee. just wanted to make sure you knew that. apple care is only meant to cover manufacturing defects, like a warranty. there are LOTS of cases where they go above & beyond that, with & without apple care policies.your carrier may also provide insurance policies. with the lifeproof cases and shit out there, in short of running over your iphone, clumsiness should be low.
10/10/2011 9:45:19 PM
Is anyone else having issues with the pre-sign delivery form? The link provided on Apple's order info page is not working and I've read on other forums that Apple is telling them no pre-sign for the 4s. Any ideas for those of us that have nobody available to sign for the package on Friday?
