Would anyone be in favor of firing Lowe before the season ends?

Would anyone be in favor of giving Lowe a contract extension before the season ends?

[Edited on December 29, 2010 at 10:25 PM. Reason : ^well lets see who says yes to either of these hypothetical questions]

Neither of those are even remotely good ideas, and no one is going to say yes to either except maybe rally.

^^Don't think anyone is willing to go that far. Can't think of many circumstances where that does anything positive for a program.

I'm willing to give Lowe another year...I'm not even saying he should be fired. My point is that I've just seen nothing to indicate we're turning things around other than recruiting rankings.

I certainly wouldn't give him a contract extension

I don't think anyone actually wants him fired tomorrow. It's that people are already putting a wrap on the season, not letting it play out, not giving him a full year with his guys before making their decision. These guys have made up their minds without giving him a full shot.

honestly, lets say we get Smith back 100% before conference play, and start 0-12 in conference play

i could see him being fired then

i just don't see that happening

Not saying I think this should happen, but with a new AD probably wanting to bring in "her guy" and Lowe being in year 5, I think Lowe will get canned if he doesn't make the tournament.

I think Lowe knows this, too.

Edit: As do most of you

Definitely not mid-season, though.

I would keep him for the whole season regardless of the results...we're just going to look like assholes if we don't wait until the season is over to fire him...plus firing him during the season leaves a longer window for other coaches to poach our recruits.

ive got a better question

does anyone really think if we make the ncaa tournament (and even go on a run of some sort in it) with our current talent that it will be a sign of sustainable program improvement that lowe can continue?

or would it mean that we would just have a really shitty version of paul hewitt?

^^^It depends on if we make the tournament by actually playing well during the regular season, or get lucky and win the ACC tournament as the 10th seed.

what if we win the ACC tournament as a 12 seed and make the Final Four

what if we win the ACC regular season, get beat by 40 in the first round of the ACCs, and lose by 30 to a 14 seed in the opening round

im going to be pissed if we end up with gregg marshall. id rather dick around with lowe for another 2 years to wait for better options than settle for him

though i guess you could argue that we've already chosen that option for the last 5 years

Costner was recruited by everyone from Kansas to UCLA. He was hardly a system recruit. And really Fells wasn't a typical Herb recruit either. He was a dynamic athlete who just never put his athleticism together with basketball well. We're all disappointed they didn't turn out to be better, but I don't think those two fit in to the whole "Herb system guys" like Horner and McCauley do...

Valvano got lucky and won an ACC tournament and an NCAA tournament

Should have fired him the year

Like I said in my post, shitty attitudes and injuries

Fells and Costner were hampered by both during their time here

mccauley also had decent basketball talent that could be utilized by most basketball teams. iirc he was recruited by pitt

part of coaching is taking parts that don't necessarily fit perfectly and making them fit as well as they can. horner was a really shitty player outside of herb's scheme. the rest...

I'm no AD, but here's what I'd do.

Not really a shot in hell that they're going to come, but you have to ask these first for apparent reasons:
1) Sean Miller
2) Rick Barnes

After that, realistic candidates (In no order, my list at least) you call:

Randy Bennett
Brian Gregory
Dave Rose
Donnie Jones
Gregg Marshall

Heard alot of people mentioning Keno Davis, too...not really sure why, though

We were picked #1 in the ACC that year, and had Whittenburg not went down, we probably would have been.

His first game back was the first round of the ACC Tournament, IIRC

And I know you were joking

this is ridiculous

valvano struggled in acc play (though averaging .500 >>> averaging 5-11) but outside of that there is no comparison

he made the tournament in his second year, nearly every other year and made two other elite eights. even if you take away the 1983 season he absolutely deserved to continue coaching here until the ncaa got all up in our business

I realize you were tongue in cheek, ernie

Wasn't the NCAA tournament fewer teams when Valvano made it, too?

That's why I never put much stock into the "Herb first coach in NCSU history with 5 straight" argument. Someone on here was arguing he was obviously better than V and Sloan because of that

Edit: 1985 was when it was expanded to 64...so at least part of his time here there were only 48 teams

Surprised no one has ripped my list apart yet

I know college BBall decently well, but not like I follow college football.

I honestly don't know all there is to know about these coaches, just a list of 'up-and-comers' at smaller schools that I think we'd have a good shot at most/all of them. I honestly couldn't tell you what offenses they run, etc and many of you are probably more familiar.

If we have to find a new coach, I just want one that has a decent non-princeton variant offense and that stresses the hell out of defense and toughness (See: Tom Izzo / Kryzooski style of play)

That list obviously isn't a wish list for me. I'd like to have Mark Turgeon or Mike Anderson, but those aren't going to happen (Not in the "ridiculos to ask" category, but neither will leave)

Poll everyone on IF THE SEASON ENDED NOW, which is what we all are talking about.

Well, I said Brad Stevens, and everyone went BigEgo on me and laughed. Who's laughing now?

"Duke fans wanted K fired after year 3, and UNC fans hanged an effigy of Dean early in his career to show how much they wanted him gone"

1) Coach K made the NCAAT in year 4 and virtually every year since

2) Dean Smith had ACC winning seasons in 3 out his first 5 years

3) Gary Williams made a Sweet Sixteen in year 5

These comparisons are so stupid....

yeah, Hodge didn't want to win at all...he was pretty calm and reserved usually...didn't let his emotions show at all...and didn't prove that by singlehandedly leading us to our best season in the last 10 years or anything

nope...McCauley wanted to win more than anybody...not even disputable

i'm not trying to hate on McCauley either...I liked him as a player...just don't know why you're acting like Hodge didn't have as much heart as anyone

Your trolling was acceptable 2 years ago when Sid was going 5-11, 6-10 with a mix of shit.

Your trolling is not as acceptable in year 5 when we are headed for 5-11, 6-10.

But please by all means all of you, please tell us how Sid needs more God Damn time.
