It's gasoline. He helped me replace my fuel tank a few weeks ago, and we needed to do something with all the old dirty fuel. It really didn't burn that well, so it wasn't quite as dangerous as it looks.

I haven't shot much at all recently, and every time I do my 40D shows her age. The photos just don't look right any more. Everything looks... flat. And dark, even when exposed properly. Bleh.

8/17/2012 9:51:23 PM
Plz to provide your e-mail address and I will send you a full resolution file you can print and frame. There are moAr animals from this trip here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/igordmitry/sets/72157628532684355/with/7805184352/ nothing really National Georgaphic-worthy, just some beautiful animals looking into the lens. Although we did see a baby gazelle being born, taking its first steps, and then almost being eaten by a passing hyena. We were all holding our breath. I got it on video and will have to put together a video with dramatic narration, Discovery-style

Igor, are all of these with the 60D? What glass?
8/17/2012 11:47:09 PM
Where did you go, and why? Awesome shots.
8/18/2012 11:12:46 AM
This has probably been mentioned before, but what lens/body rental sites do you trust and use frequently?
8/18/2012 12:13:42 PM
i've used and enjoyed lensrentals.com
8/18/2012 8:43:04 PM
^I have used them too. Also if you are in the Triangle Southeastern Camera rents glass as well. Mainly at the Raleigh store, but even some at the Carrboro location.

love those shots, Igor
8/18/2012 10:16:41 PM
Thanks for the compliments, everyone. These were the shots I brought back from my trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar, which I did mostly for selfish reason of climbing Kilimanjaro. Since I was already in Tanzania, 3-day safari to Tarangere, Ngorongoro crater, and Serengeti national parks, as well as a side trip to Zanzibar were a no-brainer. There was definitely a ton of photographic opportunities all over the place, although I could not take advantage of all of them, mostly because we had a really packed schedule and couldn't really stop every time I wanted to take a photo or shoot some video. But I sure tried, and I brought back something like 100 gigs (pics were all JPEG, but video took a lot of space of course). I feel like i would have done better given a slower pace though. If you have the flexibility, I recommend to go with a small group of friends or family, or with a dedicated photo safari group, if your primary goal is photography. Because it is really hard to take a quality photo (let alone video) from a 1987 Land Cruiser bouncing down a dirt road at 60kph.Pics were all from the 60D. Safari pics were shot with Canon EF 70-200L f/2.8 IS or the EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 I didn't take the big lens up the mountain, so the pics from up there is 10-22 or the EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6. I think the mask was done with EF 50 f/1.4. I applied some Lightroom presets to some of the pics, like the giraffes, and others were left alone. All of these were shot in JPEG due to memory space considerations.I also bought this awesome Manfrotto monopod with a ball joint at the bottom and a fluid cartridge for panning, and it was worth every penny, especially for video but also for the safari pics (70-200 gets heavy on hands really fast): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=434422&Q=&is=REG&A=details Easy to expand and collapse, light enough to where I took it all the way to the Kili summit, and the ball joint is stiff enough to hold the camera upright with no external assistance (only at the lowest setting though, and I was still spotting it, in case the wind blew it over or something). That's how I got the nighttime pic of the Barafu campsite, it was something like a 20 sec exposure.I brought one speedlight with me, but I only used it once, for a nighttime portrait pic at the safari camp. For most of the trip, it was run-and-gun type of scenario, so in the future if I had a choice between bringing a speedlight or an extra lens, I think I would have gone with the lens. A small LED light panel, on the other hand, was instrumental for nighttime interviews at the camp, as well as using it as a lantern around the camp (and a "high-beam" light on the trail on the way down)I brought a bunch of charged batteries, I think 5 for the 60D and two for Canon HF-S200 camcorder. I also charged batteries and phones (mine and other peoples') with a 12V solar panel and a universal charger along the way.To answer the question abour rentals, I also used Lensrentals.com with great success, although if you only need the lens for a day or a weekend, local rental is cheaper (at least here in the DC area).[Edited on August 20, 2012 at 11:16 AM. Igor Those shots are amazing. Ditto to Ronny. If you're in town let me know if you ever want to get together for a shoot. I've been getting out a bit more now and am looking for anything to take pictures of other than kids on slides. Also, thanks to DivaBaby19 for getting us into the Jimmy V tournament this morning. I still havent gone through all the photos I took yet, but here's two I grabbed from early on.and I had to leave a little early to get to my Godson's first birthday party. A shot from that:

Igor I really like those shots from Africa. Forgot to comment on them earlier. Great stuff.I put just a couple shots up from the V. I will put up some more and do some editing later. Here is a link to them:https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151125729769547.464795.500029546&type=3&l=a713a74fb0In the meantime though, I wanted to share this gem from yesterday. While Mtan Man214 and I were shooting yesterday, we walked to the 18th hole, where one of the sponsors was Hooters. They had 4 Hooters girls up there, and a fair amount of people and photographers hanging out. While standing there Mtan Man214 made the comment "Hey do you remember iphotou that used to post on TWW? Some of these guys remind me of him." I said "Oh yea, that Charlie's Images creep with his shitty model photography" and had a laugh. When I got home and was going through pictures, I found this:I thought nothing of it, just one of the creepers showing off, until I zoomed in on that shit on the speedlight, which is a lost and found tag. And the email address listed for the photographer is none other than charliesimages@gmail.com. Under that Hooters All Star hat is the one and only iphotou! I checked out his FB page and sure enough, Charlie posted 100 pictures from the Hooters tent at the Jimmy V on Sunday. Lucky ladies had him there all day long. Apparently he loves him some Hooters as every other post on his page is checking in from there, eating there, or talking about them. Couldn't believe that Mtan Man214 brought him up and we talked shit about him and he was right there the whole time.https://www.facebook.com/photos.charliefranks[Edited on August 27, 2012 at 9:55 AM. I can't believe I was in the presence of iphotou and wasn't quick enough to realize it so I could make sure he knew how creepy I find him. I can only hope he overheard us.I think I've edited through most of everything I took that day and put some favorites on my flickr:http://www.flickr.com/photos/austingd/sets/72157631276336558/with/7874846924/ TenaciousC I only talked with one other shooter, Andy from the Raleigh Telegram. Don't know if that was you or not. If not, you may have recognized me as the big ginger guy in the black polo crawling around through the grass. Also, if anyone wants to get together Wednesday for a shoot, the Raleigh Outdoor Photography Club is going to meet-up at Lake Crabtree at 7pm to shoot some mountain bikers on the trails. I think it's a partnership between the two meet-up groups so there should be some good collaboration.
8/27/2012 3:45:07 PM
^Nice shots Austin. And yea I was thinking about that shoot Wednesday. Dunno if I can make it, but might check it out.

Went out to the meet-up at Lake Crabtree and threw a few images on my flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/austingd/It got really dark, really fast. Panning was pretty much it, though I had a few succesful images holding my flash off camera. Here's my top pick:

Just checked out a 70-200 for a gig on Monday and I really want to get out and play with it before then. Anyone want to shoot this weekend?
9/1/2012 3:40:20 PM
I just saw the part earlier where DoubleDown and Mtan Man214 won the food porn competition! Congrats yall!Ronny, great photos, even the 40D ones, I do not think they look flat at all. OmarBadu, also great job, especially the third one. Did you do any color correction or did you just shift white balance in-camera? Either way, looks cool!Nighthawk, great investigating skills. Although I met a lot of tDubbers and they are not like that at all, iphotou totally fits the internet creep stereotype. That's not how I imagined him but LOL.Mtan Man214, I would definitely come out and shoot with you guys, not this weekend but maybe at least once before the leaves come down. Enjoy the 70-200! Also, for those MTB photos, try setting your flash sync to second-curtain. That will move the motion trail behind the rider, which will look more natural. Off-camera flash would be even better, of course. Panning is always fun, feels good when you match the speed just right!EMCE congrats on picking up a DSLR and joining the club! We expect nothing but the grizzliest photos form ya. In the meantime, read up on composition rules before you get too deep into the technical mumbo-jumbo. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/basics.htm is a good start.TreeTwista I am terrible at measureing distances, but I think the buffalo was 20 to 40 yards away.[Edited on September 1, 2012 at 5:02 PM.
