EMCE posted this, but it got lost: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/darren-wilsons-first-job-was-on-a-troubled-police-force-disbanded-by-authorities/2014/08/23/1ac796f0-2a45-11e4-8593-da634b334390_story.htmlIt's circumstantia but it doesn't seem good at all for Wilson.Sounds like ferguson needs to be disbanded too.
8/24/2014 11:06:23 PM
Maybe we need to look at the oversight that is given to municipal police offices. If one office gets disbanded, then why were those officers allowed to go elsewhere without any consequences.I'm sick of all the cop hate in this thread though. Lots of people go into law enforcement to do good. Sure, there are bullies out there, and people that shouldn't be cops, but the large majority is not the Ferguson police force.

I think there is a lot of animosity and distrust towards police officers, moreso in some communities than others; and moreso among certain age groups than others. But hey....those are the seeds that have been sown. I think a lot of people realize that cops have a job to do, and that most are good guys. But come on...lets not pretend that these communities have enjoyed an Andy Griffith type of policeman patrolling the streets. These communities have probably "enjoyed" several policemen that harass, lie to, disrespect, intimidate, falsely accuse and arrest them. When they first released the name of Darren Wilson, the first thing you heard from those in that neighborhood was "oh yeah, we know him... That's the guy always harassing kids". Those are the seeds that are sown, and you don't get to just flip a switch to make everything all better while pointing to a few good officers as a representation of how awesome the police force is.
8/25/2014 8:15:52 AM
not wholly disagreeing with you, but you dont think negative seeds are sown when someone gets legitimately busted?even good cops tend to come off as buzzkills ..
8/25/2014 8:25:23 AM
They certainly may. I think the real damage to the relationship/ mistrust between police and community comes about when the citizen is minding his or her own business and gets poked by the long dick of the law.
8/25/2014 8:51:03 AM
There are no good cops. The best cop is still a slave to the protection of capital.[Edited on August 25, 2014 at 9:17 AM. Reason : here let me roll your stupid eyes for you: ]

i for one am eagerly awaiting realistic solutions ITT instead of incessant bitchingposting random links, saying "fuck the police," and claiming blacks are the real racists is all pretty disappointing
8/25/2014 12:32:51 PM
ok. cops should be required to have more education, better training, and better entrance exams and should be required to wear a camera at all times.
8/25/2014 12:38:27 PM
OK guys I think we all forget JUST HOW FUCKING SCARY IT IS TO BE A COP.With that said of course I am all for people not being shot left and right, but as it stands, when a cop gets a called in a dangerous situation wtf do you think he is doing to do? Wtf would you do if you were a cop confronted by what you perceive as a dangerous individual??
8/25/2014 12:44:16 PM
hahaha, ok.
8/25/2014 12:46:46 PM
Both of those posts have problems:1) "perception"2) "hahaha"...but thanks for summing this entire thread up nicely.Good ideas Bullet although somewhat general; all the cops I know IRL are losers that hate their jobs and became cops as a fall back. One dude is highway patrol and just OK.Cops remind me of teachers in a lot of ways; good ones, shitty ones, career ones, temporary ones, mostly hated because of a few bad apples, fallback profession, etc.
8/25/2014 1:00:50 PM
^^^^Like in Wisconsin (which is the only state that requires it), there should be outside investigations of police shootings.Regarding training, police forces should be doing more outreaching into the communities they serve. It seems like Missouri has a problem with recruiting black officers, so they need to look into the causes of this. To me, these seem like basic steps any good "management" would do, without requiring a shooting to foment these changes.

^^Off the top of my head i grew-up or was somewhat friendly with 4 guys who went on to become cops/highway patrol man (or sheriff, can't remember). All were fairly dumb, didn't do well in school, 2 were constantly in trouble at school and were bullies, i'm pretty sure one had a mild case of fetal alcohol syndrome, none went to college after high school, and all tried other jobs before going to law enforcement.[Edited on August 25, 2014 at 2:28 PM. Maybe standardized entrance exams, with an insert depending in your role and location that addresses local issues (state insert for hwy patrol, county for sheriff, etc). That way cops across the country can be held to similar standards, regardless of size and demographics of the areas they manage.
8/25/2014 2:36:44 PM
that sounds pretty communist/statist/liberal/hitler
8/25/2014 2:40:01 PM
I can't speak for every municipality but the process to become a law enforcement officer here in Raleigh is not simple nor easy to navigate successfully. You have to go through a long academy which includes both physical training and academic instruction/testing. You go through a federal background check as well as a psychological screen, and a plolygraph. You have to certify on all of your equipment as well as driving. I'm pretty sure you also have to have some form of post-secondary education; they won't just take out of high school. The problem is, not every municipality in the US has the kind of money to provide this level of process to their law enforcement officers. We may joke or cringe at the thought of it, but I'm sure there are some places in the US where the only requirements are a semi-clean record and a desire to do the job.

^^^^^i grew-up with a guy who works (or at least worked for a while) at the raleigh police department. he never did well in school, never played any sports or was very athletic, and i know he didn't attend college out of high school. maybe he took some sort of community college classes later, but i'm pretty sure he never got a 4-year degree.
