I'm not sure if this has been discussed on here, but I thought I would mention to see if anyone else had heard it. One of my professors is a big college basketball fan and has some mutal friends with a few ACC coaches and is actually friends with Bobby Cremins. He claims it is a well known fact among college coaches that no one wants to work under Debbie Yow. Yow was hired the same day as Skip Prosser's funeral and Gary Williams allegedly said that if he wasn't at the funeral it would be the happiest day of his life because we had taken Yow away from Maryland. This is all hearsay, but I usually trust the things that this professor says and he isn't really prone to making things up whole cloth. He seems to think that as long as we have Yow, we won't be able to attract top coaching talent.Anyone else heard this?

i agree about boeheim, but i still don't want you to tell me who you think would be a good coach for our team.

debbie yow's reputation may play a part in this search. She is known to be a micromanager and difficult to work for. We'll see what happens i guess

You should probably tell your professor friend that Debbie Yow was hired three years after Prosser died

In all seriousness, Debbie does have the rep of being a micromanager and i also wonder how many coaches will want to work for a woman. (Hate to say it, but it's true)The best thing about Yow is that she holds people accountable, though. (Which is partially why she has the 'hard to work for rep') Even if Yow does have a bad rep in some coaching circles, she's 10x better than what we had and she seems competent in what she's doing. She also used to be a bball coach and knows the game well...I think/hope that'll translate into a good hire whoever that may be.[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 1:57 PM. Reason : ]

You can say all you want about Debbie Yow, but I know I would love to work for a boss that is as open as she is about expectations and offers to get you what you need. If someone is scared to work for her because she holds them accountable, fuck them...they need to be held accountable. The lady is an open book and whichever coach we get will receive every resource they need to make something happen from her and our chancellor.

Just throwing this out there, but does anyone see a situation where Lowe stays on as an assistant of some kind? Not sure if there's precedent for that happening, or that it would even be something Yow would consider, but Lowe did have some success in the NBA as an assistant.
3/14/2011 3:45:19 PM
that would depend on the coach. Coaches pick assistants, you cant force one on them. It's more likely he's offered a position in the athletics dept, but not sure he'd accept.IMO, he'll go back to the NBA[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 3:50 PM. Reason : ]

^^^Lowe would be better off going to the NBA and taking an assistant position...more money, and less awkward. I like Lowe, but his time here is up. It'd be best for everyone involved for State and Lowe to go their separate ways[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 4:03 PM. Reason : ]
3/14/2011 4:02:43 PM
^^^^That's been in the rumor mill for a few weeks. Some say that the department is negotiating a graceful resignation or reassignment into the athletic department. The reasoning behind it is Lowe's importance to NC State's basketball history...like, back in '83, not now
3/14/2011 4:04:47 PM
I'd be really happy with Shaka Smart, and you should too.- super smart guy- tenacious defense- tourney experience at each level he's coached at- has accomplished a lot before the age of 33, and probably hasn't met his ceiling yetMike Anderson would have been great, but from the sound of things, Smart plays a similar style.

I believe VCU is his first head coaching job. He's coached as an assistant at Cal, Akron, Clemson and Florida, was director of basketball operations at Dayton.
3/14/2011 4:45:52 PM
VCU is 143rd in the country in defensive efficiency, State is 144th
3/14/2011 4:48:56 PM
If we go with the unproven mid major, my pick is Cuonzo Martin. A lot of people like Chris Mooney, but I'm not sure how much I can handle that offenseCuonzo is a Keady disciple.... those have historically turned out pretty well, although he's really green as a head coach. Done a good job thus far, though[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 4:50 PM. Reason : ]

Cuonzo runs a slower offense than Herb, btw
3/14/2011 4:52:36 PM
I've seen bits and pieces of them play, and it didn't look overly slow. What do they run?Google searching says they rank 2nd in scoring offense in thier conference....but 9th in scoring defense. Ugh[Edited on March 14, 2011 at 4:55 PM. Reason : ]
