I hope in the next/last episode Robb gets all the Starks/Freys pumped up by having them start jumping and then along with it go "ooooooooooooo" and get louder like "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH" and then switch to "PACK! PACK! PACK! PACK! OOOOOO PACK! PACK! PACK! PACK! OOOOOOOOOOOO! POWER PACK! POWER PACK! BACK THE PACK!" and then play a loud rockin rap song or somethin. i think it would get things crazy. Then I hope he captures Joffrey and lets Arya take his head.

LOL, I love HBO's solution to saving money and not showing the battle with Tywin's forces versus Robb's diversion army. Taking a nod from Tolkien's own half-man character at the BOFA This was definitely an episode where I wish I could have watched for the first time without having read the books. What did non-readers think of the end of this episode?[Edited on June 12, 2011 at 10:21 PM. Reason : ]

^ was hoping to not have happen happen. was actually quite disappointed to see Joffrey turn into a real asshole in front of his people and even go so far as to betray his mother and his future wife.
6/12/2011 10:35:48 PM
Ditto. Plus my face on the page before. Stunned...Great episode
6/12/2011 10:41:42 PM
I wish I were having a slumber party with Tyrion and Bronn right now. I'd braid Bronn's hair and shit.
6/12/2011 10:57:27 PM
WTF!!!!! Man did not see that coming at all. Real pissed off. Joeffry is a bitch and that cock sucker who owns the whore house is even worse. *SPOILER**I'm going to miss Sean Bean....end spoiler

^dont think you have to post spoiler tags for aired eps,but anyway but also, i was already thinking "what a great series/ep" before the last 5 min but damn. so good.

6/13/2011 12:10:11 AM
regardless of the writing to which you can point the books; this series has had great writng, great directing great [insert the tech awards i dont know how to name].tonight's scene w/ the spider and ned in the dungeon...great lighting.
6/13/2011 12:13:12 AM
Yeah Ned's death + the death of Viserys really caught me off guard. Who was the dude that was holding Arya at the end? Ned looked at him like he knew him and I think he looked kind of familiar. Was he maybe a member of the Night's Watch? Also lol at the part when Robb asked if any of the Frey girls were decent looking at Theon smirked.I would really have liked to have seen the battle that Tyrion was supposed to be in rather than them taking the easy way out by just knocking him out.
6/13/2011 12:14:27 AM
They are going to have to have battles in the next two seasons.
6/13/2011 12:20:23 AM
^^i think he was just one of the starks's guardscan someone remind us of that character's name?
6/13/2011 12:30:03 AM
yoren, he's from the nights watch. he was there to take ned to the wall.
6/13/2011 12:35:08 AM
I literally stood up to watch the last two minutes of the ep. Definitely gonna have to grab the audio books for my 1hr commute to and from work.
6/13/2011 1:35:29 AM
If Ned Stark had the idea that honor for his family and his name were so important, I don't see how he would have stood up there and confessed to treason, ruining what little honor his family had leftWhether he knew it or not, Varys needs to pay
6/13/2011 2:29:08 AM
Varys didn't send him to his death, he just misjudged Joffrey.
6/13/2011 7:55:28 AM
^agreed. As did Cersei.[Edited on June 13, 2011 at 8:17 AM. Reason : .]
6/13/2011 8:17:21 AM
^^^did you not see the queen's and varys' reaction? ned was supposed to go to the wall, joffrey fucked it up. ned confessed to those things to keep his daughters safe, he was willing to sacrifice his honor for their safety.[Edited on June 13, 2011 at 8:19 AM. Reason : .]
6/13/2011 8:19:11 AM
jeez what an episode. I was totally not expecting Ned Stark's death, as I thought Viserys's or even King Robert's (or perhaps Drago??) would be the season's big kills but I think it was a great twist. My gf and literally sat jaws dropped for the entire credits in silence after it happened. definitely picking up the books now. let me get this straight...The head of the Night's Watch who gave Jon Snow the sword, that is Jorah's father? and then the blind keeper at the Wall is great uncle to Daenerys Targaryen?
6/13/2011 8:30:26 AM
Glad the non-readers were shocked. I remember when the show hadn't even started yet. HBO producers and director's and even GRRM said shit like "blah blah blah the main character of the story, Ned Stark, blah blah blah". I knew they were setting people up for this. Also, Shae was cast very poorly in my opinion. I always pictured more of a girl, and not a woman.Obligatory mention of no wolves. Seriously how hard is it to have a Tamaskan with a bloody snout running next to Robb for 5 seconds at the end of Whispering Wood. The answer is not hard at all. The argument that they were hard to work with is bullshit. And anyone who says that the wolves are not important (read: skokiaan can fuck off. If you actually payed attention to the books you would know that wasn't true.

I loved that scene. Jon Snow was like "my life is so hard." and Aemon was like "shut up, bitch."This (and the next) episode make me wish I never read the series. Knowing what is going to happen (and not happen) sucks.

Even Varys, the master of whispers, can't know what Joffrey has inside his head. Like I said, even Cersei was surprised at what her son did when she let his leash slack for a second. She misjudged her own son and did not want Ned killed. She would have rather had Ned alive and lame than dead (knowing the chaos that would cause).[Edited on June 13, 2011 at 9:18 AM. Reason : .]

^^You're forgetting that the Starks currently hold Jaime Lannister, a Lannister that both Tywin and Cersei care very much about.Offing Eddard was a rash move that pretty much guarantees that Stark will attack King's Landing. (and/or proclaim himself King in the North and totally usurp the Kingdom's rule over Westeros [I can say this right, it was in the previews]) It was a bargaining chip that Joffrey flushed down the toilet. It has a good chance of fucking over Varys, Littlefinger, and all of the Lannisters, most immediately Jaime. Also, that was kind of the point of GRRM's writing. Take the hero and not only kill him, but humiliate him, making him abandon his honor, and THEN kill him.[Edited on June 13, 2011 at 9:21 AM. Reason : .]
6/13/2011 9:18:18 AM
either that or Jaime becomes a lame duck bargaining chip to trade him over for Arya and Sansa
6/13/2011 9:25:53 AM
6/13/2011 9:37:07 AM
^yes and at this point he has realized his own defeat and that he needs to do whatever can possibly save anyone else in his family. Regardless of whether he dies or goes to the wall stripped of titles his honor as a Lord is shot in the eyes of many. If Cersei's plan (which I believe it was) was to get rid of Ned in the cleanest way possible at this point (ie not killing him in front of thousands, simply stripping him of his honor and sending him to the wall) she would be stupid to have Arya or Sansa killed after that, meaning his confessing would actually save his daughters potentially.

Also, WRT to the significance of Lord Commander Mormont giving John Snow his family sword, I don't think they've mentioned it on the show, but there are about 200 Valyrian steel blades left in the entire world (Valyria was mysteriously wiped out centuries ago and their sword making techniques died with them). That's one of the reasons why, earlier in the season, it was so remarkable that some hillbilly cutthroat used a Valyrian steel knife in his attempt to kill Bran Stark. So, back to Mormont and John Snow, it is a HUGE deal to give one of those things away--they're beyond priceless. It wasn't just a family heirloom; it's one of the most valuable pieces of weaponry in the world. Also, I don't think they mentioned this, but it is, fittingly, a "bastard sword", which means that it's bigger than a one-handed sword but smaller than a two-handed sword.]

Very cool episode. That scene of Syrio fending off the guards with a wooden sword was definitely one of my favorites in the book, and it didn't disappoint in the show. The only thing really disappointing was the distinct lack of direwolf action and a giant Hodor penis.
6/13/2011 4:38:01 PM
are you an episode behind?

Just finished watching, holy shit that took me by surprise. Was really curious to see what the hell was going on in Khal Drogo's tent.
