^ i watch netflix all the time on my laptop, and i could see myself enjoying that same pleasure at lunch somewhere out of my office, sans laptop. "holding it up" isn't a valid complaint on that point.the point is you download apps to do what you want to do with it, right? maybe i'd use it differently than you would, and that's ok.you make a lot of assumptions with that last one, bub.[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 12:02 AM. Stein, do you have a complaint to counter everything here? I don't have answers to address every theoretical problem you're going to raise. If someone finds that this is the tool for their needs or wants, they're gonna use it and be happy. Please quit bitching about others finding value for their own uses.

Don't worry about it. When Stein wants to make some sort of irrational or minor point, he'll stick with it to it's logically absurd conclusion. If it weren't about the iPad, it'd be something else.

tl;dr: ipad will be a fine device for putting on your coffee table for looking at photos and browsing the web while watching tv, but the iphone is a better mobile device and its not functional enough to replace a laptop for doing actual work.
4/2/2010 1:03:21 PM
I still can't wrap my head around why so many people want an iPad when a netbook does everything better and cheaper. It's so...vexing.Is not having to move a hinge really so awesome?
4/2/2010 1:14:58 PM
See, I think the problem with that argument is that for many of these people, it's not about "can a netbook do more for me?" I think their feeling is more that the iPad does a limited set of things, but it does them a fuckton better than a netbook. Without getting into specifics of each, there's a lot of innovative and useful things you can do with a touchscreen device that's got apps specifically designed for it.

Thanks for posting that Prospero. He really hit on a number of good talking points. I totally agree on the content front, this is a way to lock people back into paying for content. He suggests is as a bad thing, I actually totally disagree. Content production has been dying slowly since the 80's as a profession, regardless of medium (print, design, music, video) and has been slowly replaced by DISTRIBUTION production. What he overlooks are two critical things that the iPad (and other closed economic systems) provide: They give individual content producers a mostly-level playing field. Sure the iPad is in bed with the giant publishers. But there is absolutely NO reason for authors to leverage those publishers anymore in a digital distribution world. We are seeing this movement in the music space, with more and more bands staying unsigned and selling themselves on myspace, youtube and iTunes. The same is beginning to happen with books. The tide has already turned with games and applications. What the iPad, iPhone, WinPhone, et al do is to open the world back up to content production as a viable way to make a living. Which, in the long term, gives people incentive to LEARN how to produce things again. He is correct that right now it's publicly viewed as a lazy consumption device. But how many thousands of companies, hobbyists, students and individuals are now software developers as a result? And how many new musicians are in the same boat? I think the written medium will be the next to go.So really it means a revolution of creative industries, and the death of monopolistic content distribution. The model today is distribution decides what will sell. The model tomorrow is the producer is willing to revenue share and the distribution is agnostic to the success or failure of any individual piece of content.Fortunately this ISN'T all in Apple technology, there are other healthy marketplaces out there to keep the new digital distributors from getting too greedy, so I think this is, long term, an extremely good thing for society and technology.PS: I won't be buying an iPad.
4/2/2010 2:06:01 PM
^Well I understand that POV from a creative industry professional. But I don't see how that helps the consumer. From the consumer POV I lose my rights to trade, sell, or give content away. I essentially no longer own any content really, my device owns the content. Cost doesn't decrease for the digital media, in fact they keep the same cost or increase cost and take more rights away. Look at the most recent development in CD's, physical media prices have dropped, yet if I buy a CD I can do whatever I want with it pretty much.
4/2/2010 2:11:34 PM
I dont give a shit about comics but I have to admit the Marvel app is pretty cool. The frame by frame advancing mode (cant remember what its called) is pretty cool, adds a new element to the story zooming in to certain convo bubbles or items, I like it.
4/2/2010 2:32:58 PM
Steam, xbox marketplace, ps3 marketplace all use the same model. Digital distribution of content. I think it's a step in the right direction. Then again I didn't grow up with comics, pogs(?), and such. I did grow up with pc and console gaming but was one of very few to have that so it also wasn't something to share and trade when I was much younger. Also these things need to evolve. Comics are evolving, gaming is becoming more social (for the most part) so it does 'bring people together'[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 2:34 PM. Reason : .]

^^^ It's interesting because it runs counter to the other big internet trend of easily selling off stuff you don't want anymore.[Edited on April 2, 2010 at 2:37 PM. Reason : .]
4/2/2010 2:36:29 PM
Yes, digital distribution is cost-effective and convenient. It does however take away whatever rights you "used" to have with physical media. The frustration is not about the distribution METHOD, it's about the RIGHTS (or rather lack thereof) that surround it.
