I enjoyed the summer slim & secure video monitor while it lasted. It eventually died--prolly after a year of use, and now we just use the graco secure coverage monitor. He's older now, but being able to check in on the video if he made a noise and see if he would settle himself back to sleep over charging in the room to check on him was worth every penny of the video monitor. I will def buy a new one for the next child, or get a camera and have an app on my phone (there's gotta be one by now).

My sister has been in the process of adopting a child from NC Childrens Home. They were looking into welcoming an older child into their home, but this week they got a surprise! She now has a 4 month old boy and a 4 year old girl, brother and sister! She has pretty much everything she needs for the girl, but only basic needs for the boy. If anyone has anything left over from their kids around the 4 month old that is boyish or gender neutral that they would be willing to part with please send me a pm!
3/15/2013 11:29:27 AM
how much does the 4 month old weigh?
3/15/2013 12:23:21 PM
He is wearing 3-6 month clothes, they don't know the weight. These kids came straight from the ex- parents house, and my sister hasn't taken them to the pediatrician yet.

Duke... i know it wasn't a planned thing, but you are blessed with a great child, and from what you have posted in here, she is blessed with a great dad. (blessed in the totally secular sense)
11/6/2013 6:51:45 PM
thanks. yeah i sure as hell wouldn't want to go through all that again, and I will be glad when I don't have to deal with her mother anymore in 11 more years, but my daughter is awesome. she, in isolation from all the peripheral issues, has been a great experience.also, I'm not religious, but I'm not one of those dickheads that gets bent out of shape at people using terms like "blessed", regardless of context.
11/6/2013 7:12:16 PM
Yeah, those dickheads who are literally zero people on the entire planet sure are dickheads. On a serious note, how old was she when she got her ears pierced? Wife and I are mulling over that conversation atm.
11/7/2013 9:43:47 AM
She was a baby. I think she was less than 8 months, because I remember being there with her, and she was about 8 months old when I left FL for WA and didn't see her much for a couple of years.
11/7/2013 10:37:37 AM
My niece just got her ears pierced at almost 6. It was her adoption anniversary present. I got mine pierced at 11.
11/7/2013 11:03:05 AM
My husband and I refuse to pierce our daughter's ears before she's old enough to want them done and appreciate it. I think that it is unethical to cosmetically alter a child's body without their consent. Not to mention, I think you're robbing your little girl of a milestone. I had mine pierced in elementary school. I wanted it, waited for it, and had to earn it with good behavior. My mom would just touch her ear lobe when I'd get out of line. Once I was allowed to have them pierced, I felt so grown up and proud of myself. I really don't want to take the choice and the experience away from her by doing it before she's old enough to really want it done. It's tempting to do it because it's "cute," but then i really think about it. You're poking holes into a baby who is completely unaware of what you're doing to them or why you're causing them pain just because you think it's cute. That's kinda f'ed up.
11/7/2013 12:30:22 PM
beat me to it. you're going to make your child cry, not just during the appointment, but throughout the healing process, because you want to see sparkly things in her ears years before she'll ever appreciate it or have a conscious thought that maybe she doesn't want bars of metal inserted into her body. I went with my friend to get her baby's ears pierced, though. The baby didn't cry that long when they did it, but got a pretty shitty infection on one side, and that took like 6 weeks to heal. I also asked to get my ears pierced in elementary school and would suggest it. some of my peers never did get their ears pierced and are satisfied with their choice, and I assume it's not just a case of 'wimping out'.
11/7/2013 12:39:30 PM
I wasn't flamebaiting TheDuke so back the fuck off. Our girl is 5 and she hasn't bothered asking about it. I like the idea of letting her approach us if she wants and making it something to earn.
11/7/2013 12:49:06 PM
My niece definitely asked to have it done. And because it was her choice and because my sister took a few weeks to decide and discuss all the care they would need with her she took great care ofthem and let them heal properly. She is very proud of them. I didn't want them until I was 11so I didn't ask. There was definitely a "if you don't keep them clean and keep your fingers off them" warning. Basically if they got infected because of something she did or didn't do they would take them out and she had to wait X amount t of time before getting them pierced again. And I think it was at least a year. [Edited on November 7, 2013 at 1:55 PM. Reason : .]

^^ Yeah, it was really her mom's doing. I wasn't totally sold on the idea, but not severely opposed to it either, and I wasn't about to pick a fight on something I wasn't really interested in going to war over, haha...not when there was a whole list of things to fight about.I get the letting it be a milestone/experience, etc. On the flip side, it was almost a non-event as an infant.
