I don't know, possibly. It's not that big a deal but it's pretty annoying every once and a while when I need to use the scanner.
8/13/2009 1:49:21 PM
I'm thinking about making the move sometime soon. How does NCSU's new Trend Micro OfficeScan 8 stack up with Windows 7? Or should I look for some other AV program?
8/13/2009 8:20:36 PM
don't use AV
8/13/2009 8:21:25 PM
No? I guess it really has done nothing for me but use up resources (Norton all these years). I guess it just makes me feel like there's a safety net just in case.
8/13/2009 8:43:34 PM
im getting the error "the directory is not empty" when trying to delete the windows.old folder since i migrated all my stuff over and don't need any of those programs, should have just done a clean install but oh welli tried the shredder in CCleaner but that didnt work either
8/13/2009 8:49:16 PM
^ reinstall, do the clean wipe this time. it won't take long and will be worth it[Edited on August 13, 2009 at 8:56 PM. Reason : ^^ i've been AV free for years. unless you have noobs using your computer too, ditch it]
8/13/2009 8:55:42 PM
until Forefront comes out, you will want AV.ESET is the only one I remotely like for Win7, and I literally tried every single option out there during the beta. Very little resource usage, keeps updated, inexpensive and has caught several things I would have otherwise been infected by (just from regular internet browsing and email).
8/13/2009 9:01:26 PM
8/13/2009 9:02:52 PM
^^^ Same here, 0 viruses the entire time
8/13/2009 9:37:37 PM
^that you know of
8/13/2009 10:11:28 PM
you could say the same thing about people WITH anti-virus
8/13/2009 10:21:40 PM
^
8/13/2009 10:33:57 PM
That's a silly analogy
8/13/2009 10:37:46 PM
well i know plenty of people with several anti-virus and/or anti-spyware tools installed whose computers i've had to clean up. i've never been asked by somebody who decided not to use anti-virus to clean up their PC.you're right, i could easily have thousands of viruses infecting my computers and i could not know it. but you can just as easily say "you don't know what you don't know" to somebody with or without AV.
8/13/2009 11:39:31 PM
ESET NOD32 get's my vote, love it.No reason not to protect your PC. I mean unless the value of your data is less than the value of the Anti-Virus.
8/14/2009 12:57:42 AM
or if almost all of the big brands are complete fucking resource hogs and unnecessary.nod32 being an exception
8/14/2009 8:47:25 AM
did i completely miss the avgfree part of the debate? this has worked great for me, and does not seem at all resource hungry.
8/14/2009 10:21:54 AM
ESET NOD32. Wait until it's 10.00 again at newegg.
8/14/2009 11:20:36 AM
anybody else used boxee on win 7? keeps freezing like fucking crazy for me. i've never really used boxee before but was gonna give it a shotalso:DEAR NOEN,I HAVE FOUND THAT BING FINALLY GAVE ME BETTER SEARCH RESULTS THAN GOOGLE WHILE SEARCHING FOR THIS PROBLEM.SCHPENXEL[Edited on August 14, 2009 at 11:42 AM. I'm currently running AVG Free... would it be worth the price to get up on this ESET NOD32?All this virus talk is making me
8/14/2009 12:36:01 PM
doubt it.avg did some weird resource hogging shit when i tried it on win 7 beta.. but i havent tried anything since then. just not worth it
8/14/2009 12:42:00 PM
I'm running AVG on Win 7 RTM right now and haven't seen any issues with it thus far (granted, it has been less than a week).I guess I'll grab it if I see it on newegg for $10, but won't put $30 on it

I've been running the beta for Microsoft Security Essentials. Really like it so far.
8/14/2009 9:07:16 PM
Installed RTM on a friend's Dell Mini w/ 1 GB RAM and an 8 GB SSD. Working flawlessly. Also installed Eset Smart Security, which is nice and light.Used these guides:http://gizmodo.com/5257386/how-to-install-windows-7-on-almost-any-netbookhttp://www.mydellmini.com/forum/windows-7-guides/2403-windows-7-ultimate-drivers-list-installation.htmlhttp://www.mydellmini.com/forum/windows-7/2441-windows-7-ultimate-solid-state-drive-speed-tweaks.htmlInstalled an old game called Bailey's Book House for his younger brother and it works better on 7 than on Vista.
8/15/2009 8:26:34 AM
Mines working great on my dell 1420, except the sound driver. It keeps telling me that Im installing it correctly and that it was a success, but I get no sound? Not sure what the deal is there, but the OS itself is pretty spiffy. Just running a basid 7/avira/pg2 at the moment. Very smooth.
8/15/2009 11:39:48 AM
I don't know if anybody else is having this problem but whenever i'm playing a video on win 7 either with media player or gom player, it randomly freezes for up to 20 secs and then resumes. I thought it was the 8600m gt nvidia since i've read that it had a defect in it. But i've reformatted it and put vista on it and now it's playing without any problems. I used the win 7 rc and rtm and both froze while playing videos so theres nothing wrong with my copies. Perhaps it was the driver but dell doesn't have the win 7 drivers for the 8600m gt on their site so I used the latest copy from nvidia website. Any suggestions?
8/15/2009 4:42:25 PM
I have had more (seemingly) problems than with the RC.
8/15/2009 5:08:56 PM
btw just in case anyone wanted to know, windows 7 with avg running very well on a nettop - zotac ion mobo with intel atom 330. overclocked the FSB beautifully and easily too. if anyone wants to know the parts i ordered, it was pretty cheap and literally makes NO noise at all (fanless).
8/15/2009 7:14:22 PM
Well I see a nice performance gain with 64 bit 7 over 32 bit XP on a 2.3GHz AMD X2 with 4GB ram?I'm not so eager to do a clean install at the moment, but if the OS and apps will be snappier on the level of a processor upgrade, I'd consider it.
8/16/2009 9:07:48 AM
Anyone experiencing problems with IE8 on Windows 7? Seems like after using it a while, I can't open any sites on new tabs. Got tired of that crap and using Chrome now.
8/16/2009 11:53:13 AM
why not just use firefox?
8/16/2009 1:55:41 PM
You might see more RAM - how much does xp 32 report? Run the System Information tool and see what it says for physical memory.
8/16/2009 6:26:34 PM
3.5 gigs i believe
8/16/2009 6:42:15 PM
Yeah usually around that, depends on the mb and video card iirc.
8/16/2009 6:58:44 PM
3.5 is max for 32 bit windows systems. I have "heard" it can use more than that sometimes but i don't think its possible.
8/16/2009 7:34:12 PM
Main issue with 64-bit is addresses obv take up more memory, so the gains are negligible with 4 GB of RAM. Better to go with 6 or 8 GB on 64-bit; 6 GB particularly if you're using an intel core i7 cpu to take full advantage of triple-channel DDR3. On the plus side, 64-bit is more secure -- one reason being it requires signed drivers. There is more to it, but that's the height of my knowledge on the subject : p
8/16/2009 9:10:03 PM
lmfao. how much memory do you think pointers are taking up on the average machine? 256 MB of 32-bit pointers? 67,108,864 pointers in memory on his machine right now?
8/16/2009 10:24:07 PM
ya, i know, not much, but it's not entirely insignificantdon't know what kinds of credentials these peeps have, but pointer size is definitely a consideration when switching to 64-bit Windows with only 4 GB of RAM:http://channel9.msdn.com/forums/Coffeehouse/260393-PC-with-4GB-of-ram-Vista-x86-or-x64/
8/17/2009 5:37:35 AM
Yeah at first I was being sarcastic, but now I actually want to know how much of my memory pointers are taking up
8/17/2009 11:11:18 AM
ok more of mozilla bug probably but it won't save ANY passwords or forms in firefox even when i have it enabled in preferences and i have a master password set, it used to pop up and ask for the password whenever i went to a site that required it and stay logged in as long as that firefox window was open but its not saving/asking anythingusing 7 ultimate 64
8/17/2009 12:58:03 PM
i'd like to know why the fuck everytime i try to type in the search box in control panel it randomly acts like i hit enter or something. i get one or two letters in at most usually before i have to try again.
8/17/2009 1:03:43 PM
^windows search uses look ahead. As soon as you type the first letter it goes searching, and continues to filter as you type. You don't have to "start over", just hit backspace once.
8/17/2009 6:43:13 PM
doesn't work.backspace just takes me back to the control panel before it processed the first letter. i can do that, then hit ctrl+f again, then type again, and it works fine. the filtering after each letter works fine, it's the fact that i can't type more than one letter (the first time) without it making my cursor disappear--for lack of a better way to describe it.after hitting ctrl+f a second time it works as it should and filters after each letter if i type slow or after a couple of letters if i type fast and lets me keep typing. very strange.[Edited on August 17, 2009 at 7:03 PM. 8/17/2009 7:03:33 PM
yea, not exactly a huge dealvery weird though. i can't remember if it did this on my old computer or not. this one is a tablet although i'm not sure how that would matter.
8/17/2009 7:06:44 PM
anybody using boot to vhd?i'm installing the RTM finally and debating whether i should set it up
8/17/2009 7:59:39 PM
jesus christ. the installer sat on "Setup is now preparing your computer for first use" for 45 minutes. now it's been on "checking video performance" for another 30
8/17/2009 9:02:24 PM
so far i like windows 7
