^ christ almighty, dude, it's not working. Get a fucking life, you ignorant sarcastic fuck. A Miata is not the same as a Ferarri because they both get you from point A to point B, is it?^^ There's research to suggest that full range frequency throughput is more uniform through a gold medium, as opposed to copper, which will yield harsher tone due to attenuation of the lower frequencies. Personally, however, I've found that cabling/terminal material has pretty much no effect on presentation when compared to a component or speaker swap. Anyways, you've got the chemistry degree, so I'm sure there's truth to what you said.[Edited on December 1, 2007 at 12:39 AM. Reason : ]

i'm ignorant? i'm not the one blathering on about how gold connectors are necessary, but golden internals of a capacitor are "diminishing returns"
12/1/2007 12:52:57 AM
I never once said they were necessary. Perhaps you should read my posts. Moron. Additionally, you do realize the comment about capacitor internals are that they are irrelevant, thus moving opinion more TOWARD the view you hold to be so correct. Give up now.[Edited on December 1, 2007 at 12:59 AM. Reason : ]

you qualified your desire for gold output jacks with a statement that gold capacitor internals is just going too farthat's fucking funny, that such capacitors are even on your radar screen[Edited on December 1, 2007 at 1:02 AM. Reason : s]
12/1/2007 1:01:03 AM
I have no requirement for gold output jacks. See page 19.
12/1/2007 1:01:58 AM
^^ So I assume you believe it is "fucking funny" for the average car enthusiast to appreciate a Maserati or Lamborghini when he sees one, correct?
12/1/2007 1:05:56 AM
you're the one comparing golden capacitors to a lamborghini, and yes, that is funny because golden capacitors are snake oil, designed to swindle gullibles like you, while lamborghinis are relatively well engineered pieces of machinery that have function and aesthetic appeal
12/1/2007 1:09:27 AM
A valid concern, to be sure. Yet I've experimented with more designs and component types than I can remember, and did conclude that such capacitors are indeed not necessary, AS I STATED EARLIER.

Nerd fight!I think I am getting and hddvd player... can someone sumarize this thread and let me know if I am making a good decision?
12/1/2007 1:22:33 AM
you're making as good of a decision as anybody buying either player is making at the moment, which is to say, a poor one given the uncertainty regarding the ultimate winner of the format war.
12/1/2007 1:23:30 AM
agree
12/1/2007 1:24:33 AM
Yet...again...I do not use them in my designs anymore.I fear for your children. Be sure they don't take any advanced English courses or anything when the time comes....and yeah, that's a neat device.....?Anyways, I'm done with you now. Continue on. Hell, go ahead and even take the last word. Make a further ass of yourself. G'night, tdub!

^^on that note, what are the advantages, if any of a standalone BR player vs a PS3? I purchased a player from Buy.com (http://www.buy.com/prod/samsung-bd-p1400-blu-ray-dvd-player-w-1080p-resolution/q/loc/111/205467080.html) but someone fucked up my shipping and i never got it even though ups said it was delivered. I have a claim open but they are going to refund my money since they are out of stock. I paid 339 for it, but i'm trying to decide if I should try to get it again, or if I should just get a 40g PS3. Thoughts?
12/3/2007 10:56:27 AM
About the only advantage to a stand-alone is having an IR remote out of the box that you can easily map to a universal remote. You can work around it with the PS3 buy getting something like this - http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=113 , but it's not as simple. Also, while the PS3 isn't really "loud", it's probably louder than any of the stand-alones. Other than that, the differences in visual quality are imperceptible and the PS3 has all the support for the HD audio formats. It also has the quickest load times. About the only thing the PS3 is completely missing that someone might care about are discrete 5.1/7.1 audio output jacks. Those would be useful for someone that doesn't have an HDMI receiver and still wants to take advantage of HD audio.
12/3/2007 11:18:24 AM
^correct. The PS3 is going to be the most future-proof player.HDM Releases for December 04, 2007* 20 Million Miles to Earth (Blu-ray)* Arctic Tale (HD DVD)* Battlestar Galactica: Season One (HD DVD)* Cast Away (Blu-ray)* Elton 60 - Live at Madison Square Garden (Blu-ray)* Masters of Horror: Season One - Vol. Four (Blu-ray)* Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Blu-ray)* Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Blu-ray)* Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid (Blu-ray)* Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid (HD DVD)* Superbad (Blu-ray)I'm kinda jealous of HD DVD getting Galactica, while I have to wait for reruns on it on Universal HD. Unfortunately it MSRPs for $100 ($70 on Amazon), so Nielsen numbers will see something like 80:20 with the releases of Smith, Pirates 3, and Superbad.[Edited on December 3, 2007 at 11:57 AM. ^^thanks for the quick info. I'll have to double check my receiver after work since it is a couple of years old and was a "home theater in a box" thing from Onkyo. Not sure if it has the HDMI inputs. As of now its looking more like I'll go for the PS3. The price for the player is back to $499 instead of the $339 I paid. If they won't match it I'll definitely go the PS3 route, and even if they do I might still get the PS3. My only thing about the PS3 is that I do not play console games very much and don't know if the extra money is worth it for me.
12/3/2007 12:29:45 PM
Good Luck! High-Def FAQ: Blu-ray and HD DVD Audio Explained <-- should tell you everything you might care to know about audio. HDMI on receivers is a pretty recent thing. My Harmon Kardon AVR 140 doesn't have it, and it's been on the market for only a little over 2 years.
12/3/2007 2:51:48 PM
in regards to the IR discussion...any halfway decent home theater should have a remote equipped with IR flashers. my remote controls all the normal components and my 360 and wii. granted it's more expensive than the remote that was posted, but it's definitely not a major issue if the proper infrastructure is in place.
12/3/2007 3:02:36 PM
Your remote controls the Wii?
12/3/2007 3:07:41 PM
^^ Thing about the PS3 is that you will be able to download firmware upgrades for future bluray functionality. I think that's a pretty big deal. Plus you may decide to play some console games.
12/3/2007 3:07:54 PM
Yeah my 1 year old high end Yamaha doesn't have it. and i paid >1k for it.you'll probably be fine using a digital or optical cable
12/3/2007 3:08:59 PM
^^don't the stand-alone HD DVD players do that since they come equipped with Ethernet ports?(no troll)

I think his point was that the PS3 has gotten, and will continue to get more frequent firmware/OS upgrades to add more functionality, in comparison to other Blu-ray players. Of course this doesn't mean you can't upgrade the firmware on anything else (e.g. Toshiba released Firmware 2.7 for their players a few days before Thanksgiving).

surprised. I would think the PS3 would have sold way before the HD DVD player add-on. I mean, if everything these kids are saying is true about PS3 and blu ray...then it would only make sense.
