Check that out...what a sweet looking build. (Other than the half-assed carpentry work on the cabinet). I really dig the plexiglass front, though. It would look sweet on a lacquered maple cabinet (without the sloppy joints), and maybe with a cooling fan?

Maybe the solution is just to buy or build a cabinet, and then have a couple of head units to put on it?

You think you could do a head unit on the order of a classic Fender of some sort, with tremelo and reverb, and 2 channels, with master volume on both? 30w or so? Or am I asking for too much? I don't know much about homebrewed amps, and even less about how much you can tackle. I know you can probably handle, say, an old Champ, but I don't know where the upper limit is.


Just send that to my friend. If we take this route, maybe I'll start with an old-skool Fender, then add some sort of Class-A amp (single-ended is the type that doesn't suppress the harmonics, right?)

amazing. there was an issue with the neck before i put it on though, the nut was too low on the g string, so i took it in to have a new nut made of bone put in. it should be back from the shop late today or tomorrow. in the meantime i had put a piece of paper under it to lift it some, and with that it played better than the gibson 336 i used to have.

I just put some SDs in my Jackson, and they are SICK. I put the AHB1 Blackout on the neck and the AHB2 Blackout Metal on the bridge; both pickups are hot as hell and nasty, chunky and crisp. The AHB1 has a better clean tone and is a little more well-rounded, and the AHB2 blows any EMG away IMO as far as both character and signal level are concerned. The AHB2 also comes with its own internal afterburner for some screaming leads, though it might even be too hot for general riffing so I'd definitely recommend wiring it to a switch or push-pull.

I love them.

finally!

crappy pic, but this is my new Peavey VB-2 on top of a 115 TVX and a 410TVX

225 watts from 6 EL34's, 2 12AX7's in the preamp and i think there's a 12AX7 phase inverter in there somewhere


the head is heavy as SHIT but it has a really chuffy overdrive that i like alot
i'll get to test the entire thing this saturday at Prevue in Charlotte.. i cant fuckin wait

played a Blues Junior (nice, but not enough grunt), Hot Rod Deluxe (nice), AC15 (nice, would want an AC30, but still preferred the Fender as an all-around amp), and an Ampeq (nice, but again, I think I'd slightly prefer the Fender).

I'm getting more and more sold on the Hot Rod Deluxe as my primary, all-around amp. I want to try out the Bluesman version, too.


Assuming I get that Fender, I need to figure out what to get my friend to build as a complement to the Fender. Something single-ended, class-A, and EL84 based.

^^ If you like the Fender sound in general but want something a little grittier, you might consider a 6V6-amp along the lines of a real Fender Deluxe as opposed to an EL84 configuration. Just a thought.

I played an Egnater Rebel 20 head last night. A little on the noisy side, but damn good sounding, and the key was that it runs on two EL84s AND two 6V6s that can be blended in any amount. Pretty cool amp for $600.

^^ Man, I don't think it's that loud. Maybe it's deceptive, because I was playing them in music stores (one of the stores, Guitar Center, was loud...the other, Fat Sound, is just a big space and they don't care how loud you crank it. I pretty much had it going full grunt on the clean channel, and way up on the drive channel).


Anyway, I'm down in Pensacola at the moment, and found a guy on Craigslist selling a Hot Rod Deluxe (that he claims has only been used for 12-15 hours) for $400 obo. I offered him $350, so I'm pretty sure he'll bite. I also might pick up a Fender electro-acoustic he has for sale.


Finally, if anyone wants my Peavey Triumph 60w combo (3 channels, all tube. plays, but needs tubes badly), I'm looking to sell it.

An HRD is 40 watts, right? That's really fucking loud. Maybe the master volume was down quite a bit when you were trying it? The only reason I say this is that I use a 30 watt head with a 2x12 or 4x12 cab at full band practice and never turn it past 4.

Oh, it was plenty loud, but not as thunderously loud as I expected...and yes, the HRD is a 40w, 1x12" combo. The clean channel has no master volume--the drive channels do use it, and I tried it at a variety of settings.

Of course, I'm used to playing a 60w, 1x12" combo, and it is LOUD.

Haha yea I have to say that the first song I'll play will be something off of Siamese Dream, probably Geek USA would be the easiest to get corgan's tone with just the Big Muff. Some of the other stuff because of all the layering and everything might require a little more tweaking.

I never tried that model - I can play Today and Cherub Rock (poorly - no solo)

I usually set my les paul studio to both pickups and crank the sustain with the tone at around 1 o'clock

sounds real fuzzy on my squier with the neck pickup

yea, I love that whole album (siamese dream) and absolutely love the way his guitar sounds on there. But Geek USA is such a rocking song; I already love to play it but would love for it to sound more like the real tone. I've never really tried to play the solo to that song.

I'm also planning to use this some on our record too for some interesting tone that I don't hear on a lot of metal records I'm hoping.

I have a little big muff and truthfully it does sound like a cheaper sounding version of the Big Muff. I do like the smaller size but the tone is wanting. Darn the Big Muff and its huge case. The wicker Muff I've only seen/heard on youtube so far and cant comment on.

I didn't realize how big the Big Muff case actually is until you mentioned that and I investigated. Pretty wide pedal heh. No big deal though as I think it will be a solid addition to my setup (or at least I hope).
