I really doubt people at Carolina feel either way about me. I am a fan of their basketball team and have been. I also recognize and respect their top-level academics that's why I want to go there. I never said I liked Carolina people better than State people. In fact I imagine they have a lot more liberals but I can deal with that to go to a prestigious school. If I can't get in I'll be ok with taht too I like state not bad.

I'm all for great players staying longer in college but until the NBA has the balls to put a 3 year out of high school rule into effect like the NFL you shouldn't punish players.

This concept of staying to be retired is in full force at Duke.

None of them that stayed have done anything tremendously worthwhile in the NBA.

Outside of the Moses Malone's of the world, most NBA all-time greats played a few years in college and I'd long for it to go back to those days. But once again, requiring that players stay to get their numbers retired is stupid. Especially when you consider that it is a two-way process in the which the university makes a tremendous amount off of television contracts and merchandise while the players get free tuition, board, etc.

different schools do it different ways, i don't even know how we do it here

at carolina, one year as an all-american qualifies you for your jersey being 'honored'

i think 2+ years as an all-american qualifies your jersey for possible 'retirement' over there, could be wrong

bottom line is, it's tough to define any real standards for this - the way i look at it is, if your contributions to your school leave a lasting impact or maintain the lasting impact your school has on college basketball through championships, conference championships or special situations (read: Hodge helping to bring State back from the dredges), your number should be remembered

but people who leave after freshman year still need not apply, wearing the jersey for just one year isn't enough

i've thought about my last statement here too, and i upon further consideration, i'm gonna disagree with myself - it should just be up to the school
