Did you watch anything that you enjoyed?
7/30/2024 5:16:23 PM
Yeah the opening ceremony!!!Also table tennis. I enjoyed fencing, it was just funny how both guys celebrated every time no matter who actually scored a point. Basketball has been good too - watched a little of Japan v Germany.

Berkoff wins Bronze in 100 back

Looking back at the schedule, you are referring to the Men's Sabre Individual Final. I was watching the Men's Foil Individual Final. Quick Google: Foil/Epee/Sabre are the different disciplines. The differences are mainly weapon type and method of scoring. Like you, I found it interesting but difficult to follow. For almost every point, lights go off for both sides, both sides raise their hand celebrating the point, and then you have to wait on the decision. The mask and uniforms are cool. Like something from a horror movie.[Edited on July 31, 2024 at 8:38 AM. Reason : .]

Such an insane picture

So how does margin of victory factor into basketball? Is it just a tiebreaker to make the final 4 if you have the same win-loss record as another country?
7/31/2024 4:53:16 PM
The Dream Team would beat this year's team by 40 points, if that's what you're asking.
7/31/2024 7:55:08 PM
It’s really to decide seeding in the knockout phase.“Pot D comprises the top two-ranked first-placed teams from the group phase.Pot E comprises the lowest ranked first-placed team and the best-ranked second-placed team from the group phase.Pot F comprises the remaining second-placed teams from the group phase.Pot G comprises the two best third-placed teams.Draw principles:Teams from Pot D will be drawn against a team from Pot G and a team from Pot E against a team of Pot F.Teams from the same group can not be drawn against each other in the quarterfinals.”[Edited on July 31, 2024 at 8:05 PM. It's funny how bad the US is at hitting a target with a gun
8/2/2024 9:47:07 AM
It's funny how the US is the only country that ranks performance by total medals instead of by most golds. It's like the participation award mentality for the Olympics. Sometimes we win both, but how about harmonizing to global standards?
8/2/2024 1:23:55 PM
They should use a weighted point system like Gold-3, Silver-2, Bronze-1.
8/2/2024 4:05:35 PM
It’s so that nbc can keep viewership high. If I was going to weight them I’d go 5,2,1
8/2/2024 4:41:26 PM
Closer to like 15-8-7 really or 15-5-3
8/2/2024 8:34:48 PM
^ almost37,500/22,500 = 1.666666737,500/15,000 = 2.52.5, 1.6666667, 1
8/2/2024 11:38:54 PM
Weighting might be OK, but it's about celebrating the BEST, not the first and second place losers. There's already a massive athletic advantage to the most populous developed countries. Smaller countries can't send 3 top athletes for all disciplines, but if their best can beat our best, we shouldn't derive greater status by having both a silver and a bronze to their gold. They were the best. We had two pretty good losers.
8/3/2024 11:07:02 AM
why even have silver and bronze medals then. if you ain't the best in the world, gtfo!
8/3/2024 1:26:52 PM
Not exactly. It's more a commentary on how countries (and uniquely the US) use medals or medal totals for bragging rights. Everyone else ranks by golds, not total medals. Check any foreign news source. Accordingly, we are currently in 4th place, not 1st, and China is kicking our ass. I know we still have most medal-heavy track events to go.https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/paris-2024/medalsAre we so fragile that we need to create a fake narrative of being the best without actually being on top?Yes.We'll probably end up on top of the gold tally as well, but stop faking it!
8/3/2024 2:15:38 PM
I haven't really kept up with how different countries are keeping up with "who's the best" in real-time. But the BBC table you posted does include total medals as well. I think they are also important. Especially when you have something like the Women's 100M which includes 3 USA competitors, or the Men's Shotput which has 3 USA competitors. If we were to win 2 or 3 medals in one of those events, we're only supposed to count the gold?
8/3/2024 2:19:29 PM
Yes, the table includes total medals, but look how it is sorted / ranked. Is that a 1 I see beside China and a 4 beside the United States? Yep. It's been this way for years. I'm not really trying to start an argument, just pointing out our fragility. There have been recent several Olympic Games where the "winner" by number of golds and the "winner" by total medals are different. And which one do we claim? The total medals, of course! It's not too dissimilar from continuing to buck the metric system and governing from the minority by constantly losing the popular vote.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics_medal_table China won.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Winter_Olympics_medal_table Norway won.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Winter_Olympics_medal_table Canada won.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Winter_Olympics_medal_table Norway won.]
8/3/2024 2:29:37 PM
in a vacuum, would you rather have 11 gold medals and 0 silver medals, or 10 gold medals and 10 silver medals? China is at an advantage anyway with their large population
8/3/2024 2:36:06 PM
Yeah we are kicking their ass at medals/person
8/3/2024 2:44:42 PM
India has 3 total medals for their ~1.4 billion population. Sad!
8/3/2024 2:49:53 PM
They're too busy studying their maths and becoming doctors to take care of our chronically ill population.^^^I guess 10 and 10.The solution is simple -- win both ways, as we usually do at the Summer Games. Germany and Norway have our number in the Winter Games.]

I disagree

Man, remember when Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile?! We'll never see anything like that again!
8/4/2024 8:39:48 PM
I wasn’t talking about a specific time
8/4/2024 9:00:11 PM
Of course I have to be willing to concede there's no universally correct answer for what boils down to opinions and personal experience, but for such an otherwise open-minded person, it seems surprisingly closed-minded that at approximately halfway through your expected lifespan, you would rule out with such confidence the possibility that anything could ever top a viewing experience from over a decade ago. You don't know what the future holds. So why make such proclamations in absolute terms?
8/4/2024 9:14:31 PM
cool paragraph, man
8/4/2024 9:37:03 PM
It would be hard to top the absolute dominance that Bolt showed on the track. Not just the times, but the ease with which he did it.This was a ridiculously good race, but i also agree that it doesn't measure up to peak Usain Bolt races from an entertainment standpoint.
8/4/2024 10:33:44 PM
^^Thank you!^Yeah, he was truly a one-of-a-kind arrogant jackass. Unlike most sprinters. . .Nothing will ever beat watching Usain Bolt destroy the competition at Beijing in 2008. Oh, except watching him do it in double world record fashion a year later at the World Championships in Berlin.]

Nothing will ever top Charley Paddock's 100M gold in the 1920 Antwerp games
