Dos

Yeah he’s not pitching in 2024 but would be expected back on the mound after that.
12/10/2023 6:14:28 AM
First off 10 years is ridiculous length of time, kudos to his agent. Second he will never live up to that contract. I believe this is his second major shoulder injury so pitching may never be the same, and he definitely isn't pitching in 2024. The Dodgers I realize money is no object and they are the George Steinbrenner Yankees of this era. They have also only won the WS once in this current era. Are they better with Ohtani as DH over JD Martinez absolutely, will it equal postseason success who knows.

Yeah it’s a shit ton of money but unless he has some major injuries and his career is cut short, I don’t think you can really argue that he’s not worth it. Beyond just the on field stats, it’s a pretty good investment!
12/11/2023 11:50:38 AM
lol Ohtani is getting like 2M a year and everything else is deferred. Wow.
12/11/2023 6:28:33 PM
^is that like what happened with Bobby Bonilla?
12/11/2023 6:39:32 PM
The deferred payments are similar but the circumstances are very different. I think the Mets bought out Bonilla’s contract and settled on the 1M/year number for 25 years or however long it runs. Ohtani is agreeing to it so that LA can continue to spend and build around him without him eating up too much salary and luxury tax. It’s also very different in the amounts. Bonilla gets $1M every year. Ohtani is gonna get like $68M/year once the deferred payments start in 2034
12/11/2023 7:05:48 PM
Yeah the Bonilla deferred payment from the Mets is something like $1.19 million a year for 25 years, when they could have just bought him or for $5.9 million immediately. They thought it was a good deal at the time because they invested with Bernie Madoff, so they were supposedly making a shit ton on their returns and it was better to invest with him than spend that money buying out a contract. Turns out that was not the case. There are a bunch of other baseball players who get deferred payments, but they're usually agreed to in the original contracts, and if not aren't nearly as outrageous as the Bonilla deal(s. He also gets paid 500k a year from the Orioles) Ken Griffey Jr is still making like $3.6 million a year from the Reds, for example. That was specified in his contract extension he signed when the reds traded for him. Bonilla was an exception because his deferred payments were solely because the Mets owners thought they were making money hand over fist by investing in a ponzi scheme.

I have a feeling this is a loophole that is about to be closed. What the Dodgers did is genius but in the end its going to rub a lot of people the wrong way. Like has been stated deferments have been done but this is probably in the extreme. Lets also be honest if this wasn't one of the annointed teams (Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs) there is no way MLB would have approved this deal. I believe every team would have done this deal, because Ohtani will bring in the revenue to pay him at the end. He was never leaving the west coast or even LA. Its like the College Football Playoff rankings, its a tv show to get ratings. He was never considering Chicago, Toronto, New York or Atlanta. He wanted to go to a contender with a winning history so on the west coast that is only the Dodgers. Guess we will see if the Dodgers have the success of the Yankees pre A-Rod or if they are a perrenial playoff team that comes up short all the time like the Yankees with A-Rod.

There's not some big loophole where deferred payments don't count for luxury tax purposes, they just count basically at current value instead of future value. It just saves the team a little actual cash in the short term. Ohtani is still going to be a very expensive player as far as the luxury tax is concerned for the next 10 years, just not quite as expensive as if he was getting all his money up front.

The Giants aren't anywhere close to being a contender and they haven't for several seasons.
12/13/2023 12:30:15 PM
they’ve won 3 times as many championships at the Dodgers this century and won 107 games 2 seasons ago and have shown they’re more than happy to spend boatloads of cash
12/13/2023 12:38:12 PM
They were a dynasty from 2010-2014, but that was quite a while ago. They made the playoffs TWICE (2016 and 2021) since 2014 and had early exits. I can't stand the Dodgers or the Giants, but the Giants org is nowhere close to the same as it was since Bruce Bochy left, while the Dodgers are seen as yearly favorites (until they inevitably collapse in the playoffs, of course).
12/13/2023 12:51:29 PM
they’re on the west coast and have a winning history
12/13/2023 1:02:59 PM
and yet they keep missing out whenever the biggest names in baseball are on the market...
12/13/2023 1:09:04 PM
that isn’t the point that is being arguedthey’re on the west coast and have a winning history
12/13/2023 1:11:43 PM
but they aren't contenders (right now)And it was the argument YOU started
12/13/2023 1:12:31 PM
I just pointed out that the Dodgers aren’t the only team on the west coast with a winning history
12/13/2023 1:40:04 PM
Why not include my ex-beloved traitorous A's then? They have more titles in CA than the Giants do...
12/13/2023 5:25:42 PM
because they haven’t won a title in 35 years and have been an absolute embarrassment of a franchise recentlythere’s also that whole leaving Oakland for Vegas thing, not to mention their aversion to spending money[Edited on December 13, 2023 at 6:26 PM. Reason : .]

I feel like so often any injury in baseball is season ending. Kind of a downer
5/27/2024 4:30:07 AM
The worst injuries are almost always season ending. Its what makes them the worst.
5/27/2024 11:24:50 AM
I guess better than career ending. Like the guy on the pirates thats about to get a career ending ban for betting on the pirates
6/3/2024 8:35:31 PM
or that guy on the pirates who's gonna get banned for having too sweet of a mustache (Paul Skenes)

are the Mets getting ready for 25?because they sure weren't ready for 24

Fergie is dethroned Though she claims she was hammered
7/17/2024 9:53:04 AM
I enjoyed the discourse on the internet that claimed it was just bad autotune that made her sound horrible. Just an insanely dumb take that people ran with, when actually she was just bad and singing in stadiums is hard! Also there is no way this or fergie is a worse rendition than roseanne]
7/17/2024 12:53:29 PM
Worst good rendition. I think rosanne was purposely trying to be bad
7/17/2024 8:01:20 PM
Yes but I'm not sure why you would ask Roseanne to sing it in the first place
7/17/2024 8:09:49 PM
^^Fergie and this person do singing as a profession. Roseanne was a comedian. Carl Lewis was an athlete. Their renditions are obviously worse but singing isn't what they are known for.
