I’ve always wondered that myself. And we see it over and over again across different shows and movies. So what was going on under the rubble?

Gas lasts 3-6 months as is, if you're storing it correctly and using stabilizers, it can last for a year or so. It definitely would not last this long.

I really wish there would be some kind of in-world explanation for the gas lasting so long. This happens in so many apocalyptic shows/movies.The little road trip they took though - the CGI, the set pieces (truck stop with all the rusted cars), etc, have been great, and have been doing a good job of making feel uneasy. I found this episode one of the most convincing as far as what an apocalyptic US might look like.

Ellie: We have to do this every hour?Joel: Gas breaks down over time. This stuff's almost water. Back in the day, we'd drive 10, 12 hours on one tank. You could go anywhere.Ellie: So where'd you go?Joel: Pretty much nowhere.

As someone who knows almost nothing about the game and even less about the story, that was a real gut punch of an endingThis show has quickly become the best thing on TV imo. Also, lighting, while I’m guessing taken straight from the game at times, is incredible in some scenes [Edited on February 10, 2023 at 11:01 PM. Reason : S]

That part when the bloater came out and just started wrecking shit was awesome. Apparently the little kid clicker that got into the car with Ellie was played by a 9 year old gymnast/contortionist. Joel's delivery of the line "Please don't..." when the old guy slowly turned towards him with the gun was very good too.
2/13/2023 9:30:58 AM
I thought making Sam much younger than he was in the game was cheap (though making him deaf was an interesting twist).
2/14/2023 7:23:09 AM
I really need to play the game again. Just need to find a PS5.
2/14/2023 10:47:50 AM
Just finished both on the PS4...still looks amazing. One thing I've never understood, and I don't think the game did a good job of explaining this either, is how bloaters (and worse) form. In the show, you see Joel come across several bodies that have apparently been used up. He used the term "done". But these bloaters - they're supposed to be the ones that have lived longer than the others. So why do some infected get used up, dry out, etc, and others turn into larger, meaner infected? [Edited on February 14, 2023 at 1:57 PM. Reason : asdfas]

^I think it is one of those things that just aren't understood in the universe. In the first episode, Joel and Tess encountered that clicker that stuck to the wall and dead. Then in the third one, Ellie found the one crushed by the rubble, but still alive. Maybe it has to do with spore exposure? Maybe if exposed to a lot of spores or if there are dead bodies/fungal overgrowth to absorb, they will gain mass from that?
2/14/2023 3:45:15 PM
Game wiki implies it's time based.Grandpa (or ma!) Infected
2/14/2023 5:42:21 PM
Just watched episode 3 and 4 again. 3 is just phenomenal TV, and 4, when the Hank Sr. song was playing while they were driving...just kinda eerie.
2/14/2023 11:13:40 PM
Well yeah it is time-based, IE if an infected person remains "in-tact" for like 15 years they will evolve into a bloater -- but what makes them turn into a bloater instead of just being absorbed into a wall of fungus like the one they encountered in the first episode?
2/15/2023 2:15:19 PM
Oh yea ok good pointSteroids maybe?

Man I’d like to get one. Especially as someone still attached to physical media, I’d like to have a 4k player. I’ve been holding off on getting a player by itself because I figured I’d get a PS5 at some point, but at 500, it’s still a significant chunk of change. I didn’t get a PS4 until like 4 years after they were out, so I’m probably trending that same way.

Rewatching ep1 - They were gonna have a whole squadron take Ellie to the spot but now all the sudden they're only sending two outsiders? Don't wanna team up any of your own folks to ensure this special specimen that will deliver the antidote to fix humanity stays safe?
2/16/2023 10:03:25 PM
No, I think the two folks were just supposed to get her to the capital, sneak her out of the qz. It was just going to be a couple FFs taking her.
2/17/2023 7:31:34 AM
2/17/2023 11:16:37 AM
So…it seems like you answered your own question? She no longer has a squadron and federa is closing in, so she sends her with two people she knows are capable
2/17/2023 11:27:44 AM
FEDRA was just responding to gunfire not to take the girl. They could have regrouped.
2/17/2023 1:06:39 PM
I still thought she meant at the capital, but fair point it sure doesn't seem that wayJoel is also known as a smuggler so maybe she assumed he knew secret ways to avoid the bad stuff
2/17/2023 1:35:05 PM
I "like" this show and I will absolutely keep watching but I think it leaves me a little cold. The emotion of Joel seeing his brother was great but I feel like some of the others have fallen a little flat bc we haven't had the time to build the relationships. Everybody else saying it's a masterpiece so I'm probably in the minority.
2/26/2023 10:05:07 PM
Episode 7 didn't thrill me - I kinda feel like it was just a filler episode, unless it's working to toughen Ellie up for what's to come. I did enjoy seeing a circa 2003 mall however. The previews for ep 8 however, look great.[Edited on February 27, 2023 at 9:42 AM. Reason : asdfa]

^It added further background on her statement to Joel about how everyone she ever cared about other than him is dead. Yet despite that she still has an overall mostly positive outlook and child-like optimism despite all the shit she's been through. Also, not exactly vital to the plot, but it did establish her as a homosexual.

this aint the game thread you know you aren't supposed to say shit!

So I played both games 1 and 2. PS3-PS4 I don’t really understand why they spent almost the entire second episode on woke. I fucking love gay people even though I am not. But to spend almost an entire episode on a gay couple seems like pandering. Ellie is not like she was in the games and that’s ok. Joel pans out to expectations. But why on earth we need to being sexual preference into the show in the second episode and spend nearly the entire time convincing people gay is ok (which I do believe) it takes away from the story line. Let’s just say they touched on the fact that bill and frank were gay. Is it really necessary to have a bed scene where they are about to fuck. No. Just like it wouldn’t be necessary to prove that Joel is strait. Fucking irrelevant to the story.
3/6/2023 7:01:34 AM
Over a year away and logged on to complain about that episode, seem triggered. But also they do prove Joel is straight, he has a daughter in the fist ep and is in a relationship with a woman later. His brother is in a relationship with a woman too!
3/6/2023 7:35:30 AM

That episode on Frank and Bill was maybe the best episode of the season IMO. It showed more of how the world changed since the outbreak and how people changed as a result. Bill was a doomsday prepper gun nut, the type that would typically be associated with very conservative political views and may have spent his life in denial about his sexuality. The world ending ended up being a good thing for him. He met the love of his life and got to live [mostly] peacefully with him for years without any social repercussions, despite the world literally falling apart around him. Despite all of the violence and misery that most people in this world have to go through just to survive, there is still beauty.Sidenote about last night's episode -- where was everyone else when Joel and Ellie were leaving? The whole restaurant was on fire, and the people living there likely knew that they had caught Ellie. Wouldn't all that smoke/fire, etc. bring a lot of attention? I was expecting them to have to fight their way out.[Edited on March 6, 2023 at 11:40 AM. Reason : ]

I was wondering the same thing re: where everyone else went. It’s been so long since I played the game I can’t really remember if that scene differed in that way.
