Interesting, played lb but coaching nickels
1/24/2020 1:06:24 PM
Haven't heard much about Ty Evans... met him once, he seemed pretty nice, but that's about it.Most of the buzz I read about him was about him getting the no. 15 jersey
1/24/2020 5:23:14 PM
Why would there be buzz about that? It's just a jersey number.
1/24/2020 5:28:50 PM
We JUST had extensive discussion about him at the end of page 1!

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/28649423/college-football-teams-most-returning-production-2020We have rank 23 in the nation in returning production. 15th on O, 56th on D. The bad news is, while we return most everybody on offense...those players weren’t particularly good last year.
2/7/2020 10:32:57 AM
I mean, returning production seems to me like it indicate their skills contributed something.Jordan Houston and Zonovan Knight are great runners. It's harder to tell with the receivers just because of the variables at QB spot, but I'd hazard to say they're decent if we can pair a better QB with them.As for LB and O/D-Line, not much comment. We had some good players but a lot of them are graduating and we've got coaching changes so we'll see if that changes anything.Secondary I think is still a pretty weak spot[Edited on February 7, 2020 at 1:44 PM. Reason : bold]
2/7/2020 1:44:03 PM
Nah, it's just that basically every skill position on offense was an underclassman.
2/7/2020 2:48:50 PM
^^i get what you’re saying. And Knight and Houston (and Person) make the running game really exciting. But I really think that stat is just a product of us returning a ton of players and not losing many valuable guys to graduation or transfer. You can have a shitty offense, return everybody and then have 100% returning production. If you take the optimistic approach, then having a young team last year and bringing back almost all of those guys (especially on O) makes hoping for a significant improvement realistic. But on the other hand, a lotta those dudes kinda sucked last year so they might still suck this year. Especially QB and WRs.
2/7/2020 3:17:56 PM
I agree with everything you said there. After looking at it a little more, the largest contributor is returning yards thrown by qb and receiving yards. Returning say 100/200 is in reality a lot worse than returning 500/1000, and if you spread ~90% of your passing yards 33/33/33 between 3 bad qbs, that's gonna boost your numbers.[Edited on February 7, 2020 at 3:35 PM. Reason : typo]
2/7/2020 3:34:46 PM
This metric has nothing to do with skill. Absolutely nothing.
2/7/2020 4:12:35 PM
2/7/2020 4:16:32 PM
^^ yes it will? Look at last year: we had all of our passing production in Ryan Finley leaving. So that system last year would have given our offense a terrible ranking no matter how good we would have been since ~30% of it is based on the QB. So by having 2 mediocre QBs coming back, of course all of our (marginal) passing production is coming back and that's a free 20-ish point boost over what it would be if we had just 1 good QB who left.
2/9/2020 1:36:11 PM
Bad teams still gain yards. If a team only gains 12 yards of total offense on the season, but returns all 12 of those yards, guess what? They are at the top of the rankings for returning production.
2/9/2020 2:05:30 PM
That is literally exactly my point - and since the guys have a year under their belt ideally it should be better now too
2/9/2020 4:18:24 PM
Just given Mitchell's resume and past successes with player development, I think there is absolutely reason to be optimistic that our secondary will improve. Just need dudes to stay healthy.
2/10/2020 9:18:20 AM
Joshua Fedd Jackson enters the transfer portal. Not good news!
2/14/2020 11:33:24 AM
Massive loss if he goes. Fuck
2/14/2020 3:27:28 PM
Speaks to what he thinks our record is next year.
2/14/2020 4:06:24 PM
or he could have not liked playing last year under a new OL coach or doesn't like the new OC. there are lots of reasons he could be leaving.
2/14/2020 4:11:08 PM
Like he realized state is just never going to be good at football.
2/15/2020 9:14:49 AM
We got a DE grad transfer from Penn State today.
2/23/2020 4:36:33 PM
USC grad transfer QB Jack Sears was visiting State today
3/5/2020 3:17:19 PM
Dear God please yes
3/5/2020 3:37:18 PM
How about we actually recruit a fuckign QB not a transfer
3/5/2020 3:58:32 PM
Well next time we get a blue chip QB recruit let me know. Because it will be the first, other than maybe Glennon.]
3/5/2020 4:02:26 PM
I thought Blue Chip meant 4 or 5*. Devin Leary was a 4.
3/5/2020 4:21:35 PM
I won't stand for this Marcus stone erasure
3/5/2020 4:38:26 PM
We are still in good shape with Aaron McLaughlin. He is about as blue chip as they come. Was previously committed to Auburn. He is visiting soon.
3/5/2020 4:46:00 PM
Leary wasn't even a top 300 recruit in his class. Jalan McClendon was though (in addition to having a much better offer list.) But I still don't think either one of them was a "blue chip" recruit.Glennon was a top 50 recruit and I stand by my original post that he's our sole blue chip QB recruit.[Edited on March 5, 2020 at 4:48 PM. Reason : Marcus Stone fucking sucked. Still the worst QB I've ever seen play for State.][Edited on March 5, 2020 at 4:48 PM. Reason : And he thought he didn't get a fair shake at QB here. Fuck him.]
3/5/2020 4:46:59 PM
Rivers and Wilson were both 2-star recruits. Who gives a shit if somebody was top-300 or not.
3/5/2020 5:05:16 PM
IMO we should only recruit 2 star or 5 star QBs. nothing in between.
3/5/2020 5:07:32 PM
So what is the definition of Blue Chip? A top 50 recruit?
3/5/2020 5:10:41 PM
people who i deem worthy of the title
3/5/2020 5:11:49 PM
People are really hyping up this McLaughlin guy when he's the type of QB the top schools bring in every year (sometimes two of them) and when 1 out of 5 pans out they're setThis dude isn't a lock to be good like Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields were. He's Joe Burrow when he showed up at Ohio State
3/5/2020 11:06:54 PM
You're right, we should tell him to fuck off, hard
3/5/2020 11:46:57 PM
^^ I mean....yeah. That’s literally what separates the top programs from the middle programs. Top programs have something like 60%+ of their roster being 4 or 5* recruits. We might get maybe 1-3 of those guys in a recruiting class. With that level of disparity and that amount of talent, they can clearly afford for a few of those guys to be busts. A team that has just a couple 4/5* on the roster really can’t afford for those guys to be busts. If McLaughlin was *that* good, he probably wouldn’t be considering State. The top programs get their pick of the lot. We get the leftovers.
3/6/2020 6:44:10 AM
McLaughlin is, essentially Devin Leary, but further along physically. There is no guarantee he's going to be the next Lawrence/Fields, but to be fair, people were saying Howell would need a couple of years to be a solid P5 starter and look how year 1 turned out for him. I'd rather land 4* guys like Leary/McLaughlin with high upsides than taking guys like Ty Evans/Ben Finley because they have have high floors. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for bringing in Finley, but when you land a 4* or 5* QB, the recruiting boost is noticeable. I have my doubts we land McLaughlin, but IF we managed to secure an early commitment, he'd be a great part of our pitch to recruits and you'd hope he would help recruit. Glennon and Leary both were key recruiters for us, so it would be nice to have another high-ranked QB recruit to build a class around.
3/6/2020 12:54:28 PM
3/6/2020 2:05:04 PM
3/6/2020 2:12:56 PM
3/7/2020 7:25:21 AM
And I was saying this because for some reason I read some comment that we shouldnt take a grad transfer for next season because Aaron McLaughlin is coming in 2021 (??)
3/7/2020 7:27:15 AM
Welp, UNC just got Drake Maye to flip from Alabama. Super.]
3/7/2020 10:06:17 AM
I've read recently that Doran said Leary is currently the man to take the job from but that that doesn't mean the fight is over RE our QB situation currently.Tower, I've said we should pursue a grad transfer QB of some sort just cause that would give them immediate eligibility and help give our current ones another year to learn. But honestly I'm not sure how much good it will do, I don't have a ton of faith in our WR corps. It's hard to say exactly how good they are because of the variance of QB play last year but I just was never wowed by them
3/7/2020 10:07:48 AM
Yeah DD is saying that Leary is the starter going into spring but that it’s basically an open competition also. Reading on rivals, it sounds like the USC grad transfer may not be a serious option (yet).
3/7/2020 10:54:05 AM
Jfj arrested for assault on female. Just arrested Monday so unless it was some delayed warrant, not sure that had anything to do with transfer portal
4/1/2020 3:24:16 PM
It took me a very long time to figure out who Jfj was.
4/1/2020 3:48:37 PM
Oh yea I forget not everyone is a level 12 diamond club fan like I am my bad
4/1/2020 3:55:08 PM
