Trent and Atticus are killing it once again.

i thoroughly enjoyed last night's episode.

Just got to episode 4. This show is amazing. Their portrayal of the world is well done and very satisfying to see all the little quirks. The attention to detail is top notch too, I can’t think of hardly any shows that match it.

^i said it on the last page, but it feels a lot like the Leftovers to me

I haven't been this excited for "next week's episode" since the Breaking Bad finale.

So I don't see how Dr. Manhattan is actually "dead" from this. Didn't he show in the original Watchmen that he is more of a psychic consciousness then an actual physical form? The blue humanoid figure that people interact with is just the physical embodiment of this consciousness, right? Isn't that why, when Ozymandias tried to kill him, he came right back a few seconds later?Questions this episode brings up though:1) Why/how did Dr. Manhattan fall in love with Angela to begin with? He left Earth because he was struggling to relate to humanity in any form and just developed an overall sense of apathy. He couldn't find himself to love Silk Spectre anymore. What is it about Angela that brought him back?2) Why did he "allow" himself to be "killed"? Yeah yeah, fate and all that, but I would expect that his fate would be predetermined that if he saw the 7th Calvary with that gun, he could have just instantly turned them all to steam before they even blinked.3) Where did that weapon come from? If Dr. Manhattan is really dead, who developed that machine when Ozymandias, the smartest person alive, couldn't figure out how to kill him? The only person with the intelligence and resources available to develop that would be Trieu, and why would she help them?4) Since Ozymandias has been on Europa for the past 10 years, who is manning his station in Antarctica, organizing all of the squid storm things?

Fantastic episode ^they literally showed exactly how/why he fell in love with Angela.
12/9/2019 10:13:51 PM
I think you misunderstood what I am asking. Yes, I know he said that thing about her trying to save him even though she knows she can't. What I don't understand is why that would make him love her. I understand why a human would love her for something like that, but he is not human. He is a god, pretty much capable of anything. He is completely out of touch with humanity and the concept of love.I guess another part of it comes down to fate vs. controlling his own future, but that is a different philosophical debate.
12/10/2019 9:18:45 AM
I hear you, but I think his whole diatribe about the life he created on Europa ultimately not being fulfilling, perhaps led him to reverse course...interaction with another person who he had no control over, is what he became interested in. This is consistent with his musings to Laurie in the original novel where he talks about her being the wonderful thing that came from "all that chaos." He really still doesn't understand - and is therefore fascinated by - human beings.

Currently just finished episode 3 and I'm loving it so far.I know a bit about watchmen (basic plot, themes from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oltd-Jsi2I) but had trouble consuming the book and movie. What am I missing out by not reading/watching the original graphic novel and movie?
12/11/2019 7:49:36 AM
Honestly, a whole lot. I would stop where you're at and watch the film
12/11/2019 7:54:29 AM
ok, the first few i didn't know what was going on. last 3 episodes where pretty awesome. I guess i should have caught up on the movie and watched some YouTubes about the graphic novels.
12/11/2019 8:34:48 AM
This is a sequel to the comic, not the movie. The movie may help you better understand some of the show, but some parts were changed substantially from the comic for the movie. The entire graphic novel was done as a “motion comic” and is available in its entirety on YouTube. It is longer, but would be much more worthwhile than watching the movie.
12/11/2019 9:00:20 AM
You can watch the movie to get the gist of it and learn about the characters. The biggest difference between the book and the movie is the ending. Spoilers ahead if you want to watch the movie/read GN.In the movie, Ozymandias detonates a series of very powerful bombs in major cities in the world, claiming it was an attack by Dr. Manhattan. This effectively ends the cold war as humanity rallies behind the common enemy. Dr. Manhattan leaves for Mars, as humankind hates him and he can no longer relate to them.In the GN, Ozymandias genetically engineers a giant psychic squid and teleports it above New York, having the same effect as the bombs. Instead of Dr. Manhattan being blamed, the world sees it as an interdimensional attack from the squid species. Dr. Manhattan is not seen as having anything to do with the squid. He still leaves for Mars though, still losing touch with whatever humanity he has left.

I’ve only seen the movie, barely remember it, and know zero otherwise about the watchmen universe and I feel like I’ve been following along fairly well so far. I guess one thing that I didn’t pick up on was that the masked warrior (the old black guy) being black was a big deal, this I’m presuming was spelled out more clearly in the comics I’m guessing.I’m sure there’s more to mirror guy I didn’t pick up on because there seems to be a lot of subtle references early on the series around him. Also I’m probably an idiot for saying this but it’s not obvious to me if mirror guy/Angela actually have superpowers— are we supposed to know by now? Seems like basically only dr Manhattan has actual powers?
12/11/2019 5:43:48 PM
^Actually no on Hooded Justice (old black guy). The graphic novel didn't really go into too much detail about him. It only really mentions that he was the first actual masked vigilante, and the one that inspired all of them. There are obviously pictures of him (always in costume) and people described him as being built like a wrestler, but after vigilantism was outlawed he disappeared. Nobody ever knew his secret identity and its assumed that he just retired. The original super hero group (The Minutemen) was around in the 1940s-50s. The Watchmen were inspired by them and were around in the 1960s-70s.Mirror guy (Looking Glass) is obviously influenced by Rorshach in that he prefers to hide his face, is dealing with some extreme psychological trauma, and is extremely good at hand to hand combat. It is unclear if he or Angela has superpowers. Up until now, Dr. Manhattan is the only one that has definite powers. Looking Glass appears to know immediately if someone is lying though, so he may have some kind of psychic power (maybe from the squid attack). Angela doesn't as far as we know, but Dr. Manhattan could have given her some kind of latent power we don't know about yet.
12/11/2019 6:18:21 PM
Telepathy/Psychics are canon in the novel

Not going to lie, the ending was kinda weak [Edited on December 15, 2019 at 10:10 PM. Reason : A]
12/15/2019 10:10:08 PM
Yeah I was hoping for a "30 minutes ago" esque twist.
12/15/2019 10:18:14 PM
I feel like the dumbed down Adrian in the last scene to the point it was just comical. If Angela got Manhattan's powers, I would have expected her to act kind of Manhattanish Just was not a satisfying conclusion[Edited on December 15, 2019 at 10:24 PM. Reason : A]
12/15/2019 10:23:52 PM
Is this the end of the miniseries as a whole? Just a one shot season?Agreed that if she got his powers, I'd think she would have had some kind of physical response. At least her skin starting to glow or something.^Yes, Adrian in the last scene was a little out of character but then again he was slowly going insane on Europa for however many years, so I could let it slide. Doesn't seem right that Laurie was trying to arrest him, he was entirely correct in that he saved the world twice. In addition to that, he had to live with the moral guilt of killing 3 million people to save the planet. She knew it was the only way, Nite Owl knew it, even Rorschach knew it, although at least in Rorschach's case he just knew he couldn't live with himself allowing it to happen.Speaking of Nite Owl, would have liked to have seen him show up at some point.
12/16/2019 9:12:31 AM
I would assume Nite Owl is in the same prison Adrian would get sent to, so if there is a season 2 (nothing decided yet) I could see it focusing on them I'm really unsure how Manhattan is dead, didn't Adrian basically do the same to him in the comic/movie and he was able to reform himself. Maybe he just chose to die?

Yeah it was fantastic.Definitely worth a rewatch

Got to the end, I think being too much a fan of the comics tinged the ending, I loved it. Just bc Ozy couldn't figure how to kill DM doesn't mean nobody could figure it out, suspend your disbelief for a second. And I love ambiguous endings like the last shot, it's a little clichéd at this point but it works. Also to some previous discussion, HJ was def impervious to heat in some way, maybe as simple as just dulled pain receptors. They showed him gulping steaming hot coffee and grabbing eggs out of boiling water. Of course, it's a little "lost" like they they never addressed it again. Anyway love this series, so good.

good time to watch this one again imo

I remember watching the movie version at Blueridge cinema 10 yrs ago. RIP Blueridge.
1/7/2021 2:54:35 PM
Not the movie version, shoot! The movie was an adaptation of the comic series that changed the ending and largely missed the point of the comic. The TV series is a direct sequel to the comics.
1/7/2021 3:34:31 PM
I know. But there's also a movie.
