Looks like they skipped book 2. Also some of the book 3 stuff was already covered in season 1, so I guess they'll update that here?

One thing I really like about this is that they can literally bring on any actor they want to play any character.

Isn't that true for most fiction tv and film?

I think he means you can bring any actor in to play an already established character. And while your statement is still technically true, it doesn’t happen that much, and is probably more prevalent in film sequels than TV (Aunt Viv is the only one that jumps to mind at the moment). Even then they are usually going to stick with same sex/race. This show actually has an in world explanation for it, and you could have a 90 year old asian woman playing an already established character of a 12 year old black boy.

^^Not particularly.

Think it would be cool to just make the next season of The Witcher starring Zachary Levi as Geralt. Or how about we just swap out John Krasinski for Rainn Wilson in Season 3 of Jack Ryan, but he still plays Jack Ryan.

Altered Carbon has a nice little setup with the skins that they can just swap as they'd like, so they don't have to be awkward like soap operas where people leave every few months and they go with a narrator voice saying "the part of ____ will now be played by ______" just to help the audience out.

I mean the new season has almost all new characters, it's really just Kovacs that's recast. And even for him, rainn Wilson would be equally weird. There are other anthology shows that go to new settings or even whole new casts season to season, not super unique.

Anyway this is prob a pedantic argument so ill drop it

Outside of Doctor Who, I can't really think of a show that recasts the main character and this recasting is a part of the show's narrative structure.

I really enjoyed this. In some ways, I think it's like the John Wick movies in that the things hinted at in our glimpses of the greater world are almost more interesting than the core story.

^Exactly. Doctor Who is the only other show I can think of where there is an in-universe explanation for characters looking and sounding completely different and having it tie in and make sense with the story.

And yeah, the new season has all new characters as far as we know -- they could be someone from season 1 though just in a new skin and they are hiding in plain sight.

That's a vastly different statement. "it's cool they can use new actors for the same character" vs any actor for any character.

Also btw resleeving is a financial burden in this universe not really accessible to the the lower classes.

Didn't like the 2nd season as much as the 1st, but it was still solid.

Yeah, I’m 3 episodes in and so far it seems much less compelling than season 1, but still solid overall.

^hahah, I was thinking the same thing last night when I was watching. That shit was pervasive in season 1, almost nonexistent in 2 (at least through 3 eps)

Question for people who have watched season 2-

I liked the first season, but the first couple episodes of season 2 havent grabbed my interest? Is it worth continuing, or is the rest of the season more like these episodes than season 1?

^It didn't have the same feel to S1 at all, didn't feel like the same show outside of characters honestly.

Hopeful that they realize their mistakes and if they do a S3 they go back to the style of S1.
