There's nothing *wrong* with Zeppelin. They made a lot of great music. But their ratio of ass-kicking is much lower than AC/DC, Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Stooges, etc.

If we're being serious, I'd say it's gotta go to the band who amassed 40+ #1 singles over the course of 30+ years on a variety of industry charts:

Manson will still be cherished 50 years from now. And antichrist superstar is absolutely an iconic album. I'm not saying I celebrate their entire catalogue, but they are the total package when it comes to replay value, entertainment value live, etc. You've got to be a pretty big fucking loser to pretend you like rock n roll and then listen to kid Rock, guns n roses, and Journey instead of manson.

Tool is the modern day Zeppelin. And that's a fact Jack. If you don't like it then take it up with God. He ordained them himself when he gave them the ability to write music that is virtually incomparable to anyone else.

Also, RATM should be mentioned here.

While bands like Bon jovi etc for 55 yo jean short wearing mooks. Their albums don't really hold up over time beyond the occasional jukebox type hit. No one outside the state of Florida would ever listen to a Bon Jovi album in 2017.

And that song "who says you cant go home" is possibly the worst song ever produced by a record label

Also NIN should be mentioned in this thread despite it not really being rock n roll. As a sign of respect they should probably just be mentioned regardless of what genre you are discussing.

Though reznor does lose points for spawning a legion of talentless dj's after him

Who brought up Bon Jovi? Marilyn Manson?

While I wouldn't say they're "the greatest", but Allman Bros and Lynyrd Skynrd deserve to be mentioned too. And yes, Pink Floyd.... What about the Grateful Dead?

The grateful dead certainly qualifies as an iconic rock band but I think if you're considering them for the "greatest" you have to penalize them for their music

The Grateful Dead are a country band. Which is fine, but they're not a rock band.

Pearl Jam is not in the running due to releasing 283 of their 285 songs all with the same voice inflection. The other 2 songs are "Bugs" and "Stupid Mop". Id put Those two songs up against anything you can think of as worst songs on an otherwise inherently good album.

Pandora is always trying to convince me that Chevelle is great but they are just okay. I think deftones would qualify as a post 90s rock band that didn't suckered.

I think many of the bands listed here make 3 doors down sound edgy and Incubus sound like Slayer.

Chicago might not truly be rock but we should at least give them a courtesy mention to thank them for their contributions.

Aerosmith was eliminated from all discussion after that independence day soundtrack officially marked the end of rock n roll

Also, did Steely Dan make anyone's top 8,000? If so your opinions are disqualified.

Bringing what, extra chromosomes?

The answer is and will always be AC/DC. They are the ne plus ultra. Their entire fuckin' discography is songs about drinking, fucking, fighting, breaking the law, and rock and roll itself. You ain't gettin' an "Angie" or "Hey Jude" or "Over the Hills and Far Away" weak shit out of them.

i realize this is a troll post, but that's just dumb.

also grateful dead are a shitty goddamn jam band. not a country band, not a rock band. maybe they're the greatest jam band of all time, but that's like being king of shit mountain.

yeah, that's what they did live (jam). they put out a ton of albums, and a lot of the studio recordings were not "jam band" songs. Of course, many of their albums weren't all that good. and granted, a lot of their songs were "country", but plenty of it was "rock and roll".

i'm not claiming they're the "greatest", but "greatest" is pretty subjective. They were definitely one of the most successful touring bands and had a huge following.

[Edited on June 12, 2017 at 3:59 PM. Reason : i mean, the Stones have done some pretty bad albums]

If you don't agree manson is a great act you should just say you dont enjoy rock. Incredible production, lyrics, vocals, guitars, etc. I mean im a huge manson fan i still listen to them virtually everyday. Im not saying they have to make your top 5, thats personal preference. But at least their music/live performances are cool unlike half of the bands mentioned here. And even if you cant stand manson (homo alert) you should at least recognize they were iconic and produced music that was incredibly groundbreaking and unique.

People forget Reznor was a huge fan and helped produce and release their early work. And it wasnt until manson grew more famous than NIN that a rift developed and they went their separate ways.

Reznor on the other hand is an absolute genius. We are talking 28 years of relevance and countless groundbreaking albums. Anyone worth a fuck can recognize a song he's worked on immediately because his style is so unique. If you've never heard his collaboration with Maynard do yourself a huge favor and quit listening to Joan Jett long enough to hear "Potions" by puscifer.

Rock is dead.

Also AC/DC is terrific if you're an 8 year old kid at a minor league hockey game and youre about to go on the powerplay in the 3rd period. You can stand up and sing along for a catchy refrain and then sit down and wipe the ice cream off your face after they drop the puck.

I mean just imagine your friend showing up for a beach trip with a 2 disc AC/DC greatest hits CD. Im probably not letting him in the car with it if its my car. If its his car im getting back in mine unless my trip is 100% reliant on his gas money. And if i do get in im telling him to turn the car around and threatening to get out at the next stoplight by the third song if he doesnt turn it down or change it. Im probably bluffing and ill settle for him changing it after another 3-4 songs.

Big balls is hilarious when youre 11 and you sneak into your older brothers room to listen to it but are you really still laughing that hard at this in your 30s? If so, wouldnt the bloodhound gang and weird al yankovic be the greatest rock acts?

In middle school my friends and I were all into hardcore rock and Marilyn Manson came to Myrtle Beach. I had my grandparents take us, and since we were so young they wanted to chaperone. My grandpa wore a suit and my grandma wore a dress. We promtply ditched them when we got in the venue and they huddled up in the back as the wondrous show unfolded in front of them.

This was the show that Manson tea-bagged a bald security guards head and got banned from South Carolina for several years. Great show.

"You guys like the beach? Anyone here go to tbe beach today? You just live at the beach for the drugs"

Everyone looks aroind and realizes yeah i never actually go to the beach. I mean the sand, salt, and heat are just miserable. He left out the underage girls tho. You move there for the drugs but you stay for the whores

I don't even listen to AC/DC, but saying AC/DC is cool if you're an 8 year old, while pumping up Manson, who is cool if you're a goth teen, is just foolish.
