How could no one put Vandenberg on our all decade team? He's my fav player of all time.

^^ This is easily the dumbest argument you've ever made. While I disagree with you a lot, I at least see where you're coming from most of the time and it's just a difference of opinion. You are way off on this one, however.

i just kinda don't get what the point of "all-potential team" is when you include guys that live up to their potential and other guys that clearly didn't. the concept of that just seems like a weird way to group players imo.

because all of these teams are hypothetical and it's a fun thought exercise?

it means that those players have the highest ceilingsome of them hit it, some of them didn't Abu is on it because he's shown flashes, but it's obvious that he'll likely not hit his ceilingFells is on it because he was an absolute freak athletically but never imposed his will on the courtI'm also not operating in any timeframe[Edited on March 30, 2017 at 1:07 PM. obviously everybody's just arguing the semantics of "potential" here but fuck it there's nothing else to talk about so.... there's an implication, especially when talking about athletes and talent levels, that "potential" generally means "unrealized potential" or "raw" or whatever. like, you wouldn't say "TJ Warren had the potential to be a great player at State" you would just say "TJ Warren was a great player at State". as it relates to sports, it's nearly universally meant for somebody that has yet to fulfill his potential

so would writing "Lebron James has the potential to be an all-time NBA great" in 2002 been wrong?had I meant wasted potential, I'd have written wasted potential [Edited on March 30, 2017 at 1:48 PM. Reason : or bust]

I'm pretty sure the hangup has to do with the fact that writing that someone has potential before they realize it could be a synonym for "high ceiling", but if you write about potential in the past tense it is just generally understood as wasted or unrealized potential. Either way people understand you now, it was just a wierd way to communicate it initially.

TJ reached his potential it's as simple as that

it's just a weird way to say that. but we all get it.
