Also, is it just me, or does it feel like they want Captain Lorca to be "Space Don Draper."

Enjoying it. I like the feel. The Tardigan-mushroom thingy was weird. I am enjoying the show alot, but there is no way I would pay for cbs online access just for that. That was an absolute dumb decision.

I agree the change of the klingon is aggravating, but I can deal with it.

It does, but it clashes with the tone. Like for the Mudd episode, dude now knows the secret of Discovery and has shown no issue killing the crew, what do they do at the and? Laugh it off TOS style and give him back to his wife.

Also, Saru can run 80 km/h, super strong, and intelligent...what in the hell is he a prey species for?

After watching the last episode, got me thinking. If they somehow warped into the future and couldn't get back til after the TNG timelines and just went from there, it might be kinda cool.

That said, I do really like this show.

I guess the species hunting his kind were pretty hardcore. Also pack hunters don't have to be as strong as the prey, just persistent.

This episode erased my skepticism from earlier on the season

I think if you stick with the show until this episode you’ll accept it as Trek

bump.

finally getting around to watching this. Just watched the first two episodes. It feels good to watch new trek again! 2 episodes in and we only get introduced to 5 main characters (the captain, michael, the science officer, the main klingon, and the houseless klingon), and 2 are dead. I don't even know the name of the science officer or houseless klingon. Looking forward to seeing more, but I like the depth they are building in Michael's character.

Avoiding the bottom of page 1 and page 2 to avoid spoilers. I'll check back in a couple weeks once I catch up.

And not that anyone cares, but I finally got around to watching this because I was tired of having to skip ahead on the Random Trek podcast to prevent spoilers for Discovery.

Also the "Calypso" short was pretty neat.

Spoiler!

.

.

SO glad they brought “Dr. Rickie” back. Against my earlier fears that they were killing too many characters off too soon, the way that some have been brought back has been totally purposeful and meaningful. Michelle Yeoh has been a total BOSS in her characters. I love her, but am TOTALLY scared to trust the Emperor at this point. I feel like she’s still waiting to either get back to the mirrorverse or conquer the current Federation through the black ops program (which I know can’t happen unless they decide to split to a third TOS main timeline (which I doubt at this point.)

The MacGuffin of Spock is a bit of a borish stringer at times, but having Pike as the captain has been amazing. It doesn’t feel forced, and the OG #1 showing up was nice.

I'm looking forward to the next episode too. If you haven't seen the Trek webisode about the ear-tentacle alien's past, it covers some relevant backstory.

So I am slowly and methodically working my way through season 1 of this show due to wife hating anything sci-fi, and my young son that only wants to watch Mickey Mouse and Paw Patrol. I just watched episode 10 where they get switched to the mirror universe. Lorca says "they have theorized alternate realities back in the 20th century". Yeah, back when the original Star Trek was made, they did. In the 40 years of research in physics that happened afterward they went down this road and other than some academics that don't want to acknowledge their academic careers ended in a complete dead end and they have discovered nothing new to progress the field, there's nothing credible that supports this is real, and the fact the Large Hadron Collider discovered nothing except the Higgs Boson particle was considered a complete disaster for the field of high energy physics and especially string theory which has been the main central theory of physics since the 1970s. But you have an established alternate reality from previous Star Trek shows, so to not change past canon we have to keep spouting bad science.

"The Multiworse is Coming" - Sabine Hossenfelder http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2018/03/the-multiworse-is-coming.html?m=1

I like Star Trek. Its calling card however is where Star Wars is not realistic and has never intended to be, that's part of Star Trek's aura in contrast is it feels "this is where mankind should go". Yet every fourth movie has time travel and then there is bullshit like "mirror universes".

^^ mirror universe was used heavily in Deep Space 9, and all the star treks have copious, even absurd, amounts of time travel (but when a show was episodic it didn't matter as much).

Actually watching season 1 now. This show would be infinitely better if 1) it wasn't yet another prequel and 2) the Klingons weren't Klingons.

Nothing about this show needs to be set in the middle of a timeline that has already been explored. Completely changing everything about the Klingons serves no purpose. Both of these issues could be resolved by simply moving the show to a later time (spore drive would still be a revolutionary idea post Voyager) and making these "Klingons" a completely new race (I mean they already are with their giant egg heads, 4 nostrils and reptilian ears.)

This series is, according to producers, canonically in the prime timeline. Which means that Klingons mutated from humanoid (non-ridged and ridged) to these weird fuckers with completely different ship styles and belief/moral systems than their predecessors/later generations, then in a few decades mutated back and reverted back to OG Klingon culture.

In conclusion, fuck this shit.

I think it’s because they can’t decide whose expectations they want to meet
There’s the old school fans who like episodic content, there’s the people that like the deliberative, political arcs that started in DS9, and there’s the fans who like the action movie feel of the new movies

Discovery tries to combine all of these, and if you accept it, I think it works well

Picard is the same way but with a little different ratio

So now we have

Disco S3 to air
Picard S2 to air
Lower Decks - Adult humor animated show
Children's animated show on nick
Section 31 show with Captain Georgiou
Possible ST4 film

It just seems they're doing a shitty job of capturing what star trek is.

Beyond was the closest thing to traditional Trek in the past 15 years
