I don't have a twitter account, and never will.

And if what you say is true, then it is really sad. He could have just as easily picked a large Christian gathering. People shouldn't be viewing this through the lens of "50 gay people were murdered." How about just "50 Americans were murdered."

nah, that was just an unfortunate coincidence. his bot posted that. or something.

and wtf are you talking about? no shit 50+ people were murdered, but they just happened to be murdered for one very specific, hateful reason. FOH dude.

No, I'm saying the people that are spewing all the anti-gay hate on twitter...they should be looking at it as 50 Americans dead. It could have easily been their family at a church or something.

Jesus Christ sometimes you people are awfully thick.

Maybe just change this to "Do people forget the long history our world has with religious fueled violence towards others?

It's gotten better but let's not act like this is a purely Islamic thing here."

A lot of people do fucked up shit in the name of God. Whether this guy attended mosque regularly or not, he obviously got some of this from his nutjob father and his political/religious ideology. Combine that with what seems to be some anger/mental health issues and access to weapons and you have all the ingredients for a rampage and high body count.

I don't think most Muslims advocate violence, just like most Christians and Jews don't either.

Dumbness from the other thread:

Quote :
"rjrumfel: But do we really know what Mateen's motivation was regarding his target? Was the gay bar just an easy pick for him? Or did he target it because of its members' sexual orientation? I don't think we know for sure yet."

This is like maximaguy suggesting it was a coincidence that the colorado springs planned parenthood shooter just happened to stumble into a planned parenthood clinic, but at least he claims to have seen a tweet from one of the crazies he follows, while this guy must really be putting effort into being this dumb.

if you are going to believe that every or most muslims are inherently dangerous then you also need to believe that every or most christians are inherently dangerous. if you judge one group by the extremist parts of that group then you need to judge the other by the same.

^^look, I'm not a huge fan of ANY type of organized religion. Obviously Muslim extremism is a big problem globally, but Christians don't get to set there and pat themselves on the back for being less violent over the past few years (let's not get into the Crusades or Colonization, shall we?) and sit back and say "I told you so!" while they practice their own forms of hatred and bigotry.

It's pretty appalling how the first thing many people are pointing to is the fact that Americans were the victims of an ISIS attack, but trying to minimize the reality that it was targeted at a very specific group of people who Christians don't really show a lot of support for.

most isis victims are muslims but you assholes sit back from a position of power and privilege and criticize other religions as if you religion isn't pretty much the same thing.

christian extremism is not such a big problem RIGHT NOW because christians aren't being globally oppressed. If the US was invaded and engulfed into a powerful caliphate you better believe "christian extremists" would do everything they could to give em hell.

This type of thing isn't really part of mainstream Jewish ideologies (jews don't have a mission to spread their religion), but in America, Christians have considerable social and political power, they don't have to resort to terrorism for influence, and they definitely use this power for nefarious (by the standard of secularism) purposes.

Next time you hear about some gay kid that killed himself because his parents shipped him off to a Pray-away-the-gay camp that legislators refused to ban because of the voters, remember you said this.

I mean who kills more Americans every year? Terrorists or other Americans? This shit sucks but it's not going to stop. No matter what we do there are plenty of crazy people and assholes out there from all backgrounds and religions that are gonna do fucked up shit. To be honest about the only way things like this might happen less is if we never heard about them. These people are fucked up in the head and you don't think the thought of becoming famous doesn't feed into their desire to do something like this? Clearly that also is never going to happen though so this is just part of our world unfortunately. I feel bad for the families and it always sucks more when its so many people together but in reality you have a much higher chance of dying on your drive into work every morning than being a victim of some tragedy like this so we just have to keep on living, do what we can to hopefully catch people before they do something, and hope the odds are in our favor we aren't involved in something like this.

You're right. Why bother gathering intel on suspected terrorists anymore? It's going to happen anyway, so we shouldn't even try.

modern terrorism was started in france or the uk by christians and began in the middle east with the zionist irgun attacks. Its a shame people don't know/revise history for the sake of putting down another religion. I guess thats part of the problem we have today.

"The Irgun has been viewed as a terrorist organization or organization which carried out terrorist acts.[3][4] Specifically the organization "committed acts of terrorism and assassination against the British, whom it regarded as illegal occupiers, and it was also violently anti-Arab" according to the Encyclopædia Britannica.[5] In particular the Irgun was described as a terrorist organization by the United Nations, British, and United States governments, and in media such as The New York Times newspaper,[6][7] and by the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry.,[8][9] the 1946 Zionist Congress[10] and the Jewish Agency.[11] Irgun's tactics appealed to a certain segment of the Jewish community that believed that any action taken in the cause of the creation of a Jewish state was justified, including terrorism.[12]"

you people just ignore this all together when talking about "islamist extremists". Its a narrow minded view and what bothers me is how its impossible to tell if someone is doing it because they are ignorant of history (which isn't so bad) or if they are being purposefully bigoted when associating islam with terrorism. Its a shame history isn't taught in our schools.

let's keep trivializing the fact that the victims were gay and specifically targeted for being so, while harping on the fact that the guy who did it happened to a muslim.

"Orlando Shooter Was Reportedly a Regular at Pulse and Had a Profile on Gay Dating App"

Quote :
"Early Sunday morning, Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, perpetuating the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Mateen, his father explained the next day, had repeatedly been angered by the sight of two men kissing. But according to witnesses, Mateen was also a regular at the club and exchanged messages with at least one gay man on a gay dating app.

“It’s the same guy,” Chris Callen, who performs under the name Kristina McLaughlin, told the Canadian Press. “He’s been going to this bar for at least three years.”

Ty Smith, who also goes by the name Aries, also said he’d seen Mateen being escorted drunk from the club, Pulse, on multiple occasions.

“(He’d get) really, really drunk... He couldn’t drink when he was at home—around his wife, or family. His father was really strict... He used to bitch about it,” Smith told the Canadian Press.

“Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” Smith also explained to the Orlando Sentinel, which spoke with at least four clubgoers who remembered seeing Mateen at Pulse at least a dozen times. “We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times... He told us he had a wife and child.”

Both Callen and Smith, who are married, tell the Canadian Press they stopped speaking to Mateen after he threatened them with a knife, apparently after someone made a joke about religion.

“He ended up pulling a knife,” Callen said. “He said if he ever messed with him again, you know how it’ll turn out.”

Mateen, who was married in 2009, was abusive and unstable, his ex-wife says. They were married for just a few months before her parents rescued her from their home in Florida, leaving most of her belongings behind. It’s still unclear if he was married again after their divorce was finalized in 2011.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes also says he spoke to a man who claims both he and a friend received messages from Mateen via a gay dating app. The full story is set to air tonight on Haye’s show, All In. "
