cultural appropriation is a real issue but white people embracing rap or hip hop is not cultural appropriation. if you think that it is, you are basically advocating segregation because hip hop has been a uniting power in american pop culture.

So I wear some of my Benin clothes in the states from time to time, and 99% of the reaction is positive, but occasionally someone will call "cultural appropriation." Never mind that wax print fabrics originated in Indonesia and were brought to Africa by the Dutch. I guess the first couple of appropriations were fine but I was just one step over the line.

Through a series of terrible life choices after college, I ended up in a situation where 98% of the people I know are overeducated coastal liberal elites intent on showing how "woke" they are at all times. Two weeks from today I'm marrying a Californian graduate of Berkeley, and she was worried about having African wax prints at the wedding for this very reason.

Since I've lost every other wedding related dispute, I dug in my heels on this one. Goddammit, we met in Benin, we are going to have funky African cloth at our fucking wedding.
