Or perhaps the larger theme here that has been occluded by rioting and looting is the history of police violence in Baltimore. Politicians and the media alike seem to excuse this, or at least turn a blind eye to police violence more often than not.Not to excuse rioting or violent protests, but comparitively speaking, burning buildings and smashing police cars is considerably less violent that severing someones spine and ultimately killing them.[Edited on April 28, 2015 at 8:43 AM. Reason : lol, sping ]
4/28/2015 8:42:33 AM
No mention of how a man got his neck snapped and spine severed, everyone is just mad about riots.
4/28/2015 8:47:17 AM
So why did Freddie Gray run? He knew all he had on him was a knife, which isnt a huge deal.Maybe in his short life, he learned that if the Baltimore police catch you, regardless of whether youre doing anything wrong, you stand a decent chance of getting your ass beaten....or worse. Fear. I think that fear drove Freddie Gray to think 'aw, shit...cops...let me get my narrow behind out of here just in case'[Edited on April 28, 2015 at 8:52 AM. Reason : h]

I really wish police officers were paid more and the profession was more difficult to get into. I really think a lot of people get into the career for the wrong reasons and get frustrated by the long hours and low wages. Which doesn't excuse the beating etc... but i think we need to go to the root cause of all this. Essentially in many officers heads this is a war... and that was the enemy... which really defeats the whole idea of protect and serve written on the sides of their cars. I will say what i have said many times... the 3 people from my class in high school that became LEOs would be in the bottom 25% of people i would recommend for the job. They were all what you would consider "bullys". Morons that got their rocks off trying to intimidate others. One of them was even suspended for hazing when given what he did he should have been arrested for sexual assault.
4/28/2015 8:55:36 AM
a Baltimore teacher said that the situation escalated when they stopped buses and made all the kids get off. it dumped a bunch of high school kids into an area that already had a lot of cops in riot gear
4/28/2015 8:58:46 AM
the rioting and looting are perfect examples of what happens when you don't use a heavy-handed police approach in Baltimore. They tried to quell the riots this weekend with pacifism, and these knuckleheads mistook kindness for weakness. The mayor was on the news last night trying to backpedal out of her decision, and you could tell from her tone and facial expressions that she regretted not taking more action over the weekend.[Edited on April 28, 2015 at 9:01 AM. Reason : ^who's saying that? These kids were messaging each other to go to the mall.]
4/28/2015 9:00:13 AM
it really seemed like much of the violence that erupted yesterday was started by a bunch of dumbass high school kids calling for a 'purge'
4/28/2015 9:07:50 AM

I was under the impression that if you are black and get arrested for drug charges you're pretty much automatically going to jail for years. but this guy was arrested for drugs 15 times over the past decade.
4/28/2015 9:48:52 AM
he took off running because his lookout yelled "Here Comes Time Out!". guess the new nickname for police in Baltimore sounds appropriate with that arrest record.

It's almost like access to basic needs and things like equal opportunity to education are harder for kids growing up in poverty.Just kidding, just cut yacht taxes and the savings will surely trickle down to those communities.
4/28/2015 11:33:27 AM
Yeah, any business that would even want to move in there would at a minimum face prohibitively high insurance costs.I think it generally takes 30 to 50 years after a riot for businesses to start investiving in an area again.

4/28/2015 11:48:02 AM
Throwing money at them won't fix their lack of carrying about education etc.
4/28/2015 11:51:12 AM
^^ if rather my taxes go to help those born into less fortunate situations than me then most of where it actually goes. But my point is simply that the people in these communities are marginalized to the point of despair. It's really amazing there are any good people willing to step up and try and control these mobs given how much the country shits on them.

Thought I'd share with y'all some of my experiences here, since I live in Baltimore relatively close to the riots (I've never posted much, nowadays I mostly lurk sports talk whenever the UNC scandal flares up).I live just West of Patterson Park and South of the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. The hood (not the wire, but still not great) is 10ish blocks North of my place, so this is a generally safe neighborhood. Yesterday I parked my car by my place getting back from work, looked up, and some rando dude (looked like he might've been a wanna-be gang member) was brandishing a handgun. I get out of my car with my head down, some guy up the street is yelling "yo dawg, that guy has a gun!" I'm thinking, yeah, and he doesn't see me, so shut the hell up. Anyhow, dude kept walking down the street, messing with his gun like an idiot; nothing happened but it got the neighbors riled up. There was some looting and B&E last night in what is normally a pretty safe area, a lot of folks over-reacting on facebook and twitter, but also some real shit going down. I hope I'm wrong, but I think it's going to be worse this evening and tonight, since most of the petty stuff is being done by high school kids (YOUTHS ) and opportunists, and school was cancelled today. The police are stretched too thin to respond to petty crime, and I don't see the national guard really doing the police work that's needed.Anyhow, my white ass is headed back to NC. My wife is in Raleigh so I don't need too much of an excuse to come home anyways. I feel safe where I'm at, but I park my car on the street and I'd rather not take risks.

Progressive State funding of education. Organize every school districts propery tax by per capita and flip em.Districts with the lowest property tax get the highest spending per capita and vice versa. Eventually everythimg will level out and there will be no more poor areas.Im a god damn genius
